    Hello! I was referred here from one of your other videos and this is a really good, in-depth explanation on how to adjust the chain. After 2 1 hour sessions I am still struggling with 1 thing; I cannot seem to align the swing arm (or whatever it's called, sorry, I'm not that well-versed in mechanics) on the other side, so the markings coincide with the markings on the left side, where the chain is. I seem to only be able to turn the adjusting bolt clockwise, pushing the alignment out, but I can never do it the other way. How do I go about fixing it, does anyone know? Thank you very much in advance.

    Happened to my brother too, cut his thumb back in 2014. Shit was totally mangled, and it was a CBF125. I think the nurse at A&E referred to it as a "partial amputation" although weirdly enough, 3 years on it looks completely normal with no scarring.

    another helpful tool i recommend people get is a motion pro chain alignment tool, there about $12 you clamp it on your rear sprocket and it has a rod the goes atop your chain and helps tell you if its lined up

    Nice one Spicy, I hate chain maintenance, particularly the wheel aligning, as my swingarm markers on the GPZ have worn away. One of the bike shops near me are now offering a chain clean, lube and adjustment for £10. I can almost justify going to them for that hahah. The only thing I think you didn't mention was to check for tight spots/adjust the tension at the tightest part of the chain. Otherwise, a very handy video for those who need to learn how to do it themselves.

  • @pokemonihovno

    My 1960 bike doesn't even have the markers and I wouldn't trust the swing arm to be symmetrical anymore. So I align the wheels with a pole. Just press is against the front and back wheel and it must be touching at all four points. But that has the same tyre width front and back.

    Spicy ...... great video's and a avid follower being new to bikes, quick question regarding chain tensioning. Is it right that you should have compresion on the swing arms (I.e have someone sit on the bike) before measuring your slack chain and the amount of adjustment needed? Thanks in advance

  • @spicy110

    @spicy110

    2 жыл бұрын

    yes and no. Basically when you sit on the bike it will tighten the chain a little. So if you were to make it right with no weight on it, it will be over tight. So when adjusting you account for that little bit of take up. Best thing to do it adjust it and then sit on the bike and see if it seems right. Can be done on your own but much easier with a mate to help, until you get to know the right place for you on that bike.

    As a newb, please accept this suggestion in the manner it is intended: perhaps rather than measuring the gap as you did in the video, you should perhaps ensure that the CHANGE is the same on both sides. This assumes that the wheel was straight to start with, but does avoid potential build tolerance issues with the swing arm. A good idea?

  • @spicy110

    @spicy110

    Жыл бұрын

    Not sure what you mean there. I am measuring the overall gap on both sides to ensure it is straight regardless of what it was before. You may have got hold of they wrong end of the stick here.

    I need some advice on this. I adjusted my chain recently and got the correct slack but the other side is out of line. The adjuster is a a screw thread attached to a carrier on the end of the swingarm and its too far back but when I loosen the nut i can't move the carrier forward. I've slackened off the axle nut and tried gentle persuasion but I couldn't move it. The bike is a 2015 CBR125R if that helps anyone. Thanks for any advice you can give.

  • @ThePgunner

    @ThePgunner

    Loosen the axle nut, aswell as the nuts on the thread behind the swingarm and give the wheel a good kick. It should move the adjuster forward so you can realign it. Im sure this is what i did when i had the same problem on my cbr125r.

  • @HalfdeadRider

    @HalfdeadRider

    7 жыл бұрын

    It will depend from bike to bike rider to rider. I would just say keep it clean, every time you wash your bike clean the chain then re-lube and check it (make it standard procedure), remember it can be slightly loser if you check it without being on the bike and a bit loser still if it is on a main stand.

    Mad Dog TV you must do a lot of miles I guess, when you replace the chain and sprockets obviously do them all at the same time. Also spend a bit of money getting a heavy duty DID chain, and JT sprockets seem to be some of the best.

    The way you establish the final measurement is only trustworthy to an extent, if the swingarm bearing on the countershaft sprocket side is worn which is often the case the measurements will be off from side to side.

  • @spicy110

    If your swing arm / Countershalf bearings are worn to the point it makes a measurable difference you should be replacing them immediately.

    Even the slightest difference is compounded by the length involved, before any proper chain adjusting the rear axle and swingarm pivot shaft need to be parallel.@@spicy110

    It's funny that dealers and bike mechanics say your new bikes chain can stretch so bring it in after a few days and we will check and adjust it, it usually will need adjusting. It makes me wonder why these pro's don't realise that it's not possible for these chains to stretch and that it has to be just seating in to the sprockets. Then further wear will cause adjustments to need be done occasionally. I guess they just go by what they are taught without actually thinking about it for a bit.
