If you want to see the knots tied slowly, then do as follows: Click the gear icon at the bottom right of the video player window, and select a slower playback speed. Enjoy!

I have seen 2 other versions of a "surgeons knot". One version is completely different from your version. The other is like yours but differs from your knot by having the tail come out on the same side of the bight as the standing end. Like a square knot as opposed to a granny knot.

I like your alpine butterfly tying method at 13:50. I hadn't seen that one before! Edit...sorry I tied it again, I don't know the name of your knot, but it is essentially an overhand slip knot with a half hitch around the loop...it jams and behaves like such. The loops are crossed (connected) even if the loop is removed in a true AB. Fix by pulling the right tail through the loop stacked on top.

At the 6:32 mark in this video a common mistake was made with the inverted second hitch resulting in making a type of cow hitch over the standing part. At first, this knot will act the same as a properly tied Two Half Hitches. However, this improperly tied knot will not hold the same and will quickly unravel. The rest of the knots in the video are correct with alternate methods of tying them. Overall (except for one) a good knot tying video.

  • @robertoneal7508

Interestingly at 8:32 he correctly ties two half hitches. Think it's due to different/reversed rope positionings possibly for better camera angles, he lost track of repeating the second hitch exactly like the first. Consistently wrapping clockwise, go under to the left, over to right - this consistency in practice prevents this (but may be harder to film.)

Lot of great knots, my friend. My only complaint is re: your interpretation of the alpine butterfly loop. It's one of my very favorite knots, I use it all of the time - it's an attachment point, a mid-line stopper, a way to isolate a weak point in the line, etc. ... but that's not the way it's tied & the way you tie it is less stable.

Bowline + figure of eight knot + sheet bend + square knot + bowline (and its variations not shown here) (plus the fisherman knot) are essential to sailing : you can round the seven seas with them … the rest are simple variations good enough for boy scout's good deed… You forgot to mention the Clove hitch which is essential to sailing too. Strangle knot is a joke when done this way : good for you example, dangerous, most likely impossible to make with a rope under load !…

Well, it's great that you have gone to the trouble to put together a compilation of tying essential knots. However, any instructional tool that moves in a way that is not deliberate, clear, and approachable defeats its own purpose. The knots here are presented very quickly in a somewhat offhand manner of someone who has tied them hundreds of times. However, most viewers who want to learn have likely not had that much experience. For teaching knots it is essential to move slowly between each step so that viewers can easily follow along and clearly understand what your hand movements are. The demonstration of the Surgeon's Knot here is an example of this problem; for a beginner it moves very fast, the verbal instructions midway are not clear, and in order to clearly see what is being done with each piece of rope it is necessary to actually repeatedly pause and back up the video. Much of the time throughout the video your hands are obscuring the rope which makes following along quite difficult. And, as others have pointed out, using heavier-gauge rope makes viewing easier and provides more clarity in an instructional setting. You have a lot of knowledge to share, and with a few changes in the presentation technique it could more easily be passed along to others.

I enjoyed your video but have a few nits to pick. A square or reef know should never be used as a bend, to tie two ropes together. As a load-bearing knot, it will fail, regardless of the type of cordage. A much, much, better bend is the Carrick Bend. The Sheet Bend and the Carrick Bend both work on lines whether the same size or different sizes. A Round Turn with Two half-hitches is far superior to the Turn with two half-hitches. Your ending hitch is reversed, giving a cow hitch rather than a clove hitch as the final part of the knot. Your taut-line hitch is the Magnus hitch version of the knot. This is the most slippery method of tying the knot, in my opinion, normally used for tying down aircraft temorarily. I prefer either the rolling hitch or midshipman's hitch. Both have far more friction. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taut-line_hitch Bowline is pronounce Bo-lin with a short i. The bowline jams when under load but can easily be untied after a load once the load is reduced. For tying up something where you may need to untie it while under load, the Round Turn and two half-hitches is a far superior knot. kzread.info/dash/bejne/daGrraR6Y7uzgpM.html I teach knot tying for the Hoofer Sailing Club in Madison, Wisconsin.

First of all it's a "bight". The definition of a "bight" is a loop of rope. People knew exactly what I was talking about. It makes ZERO difference using one term over the other when showing how to make the knots.

Your fisherman's knot is incomplete. You know how in the knot you did following the fisherman's you did 3 turns before passing the working end through? The fisherman's knot is the same thing but with 2 loops, much more secure than 1 overhand knot on both ends

@@electronicsNmore I suppose that is true about varying any knot. But every single instruction manual I've read om the double fisherman's knot uses two turns. It's basically a combination of the double fisherman's you showed plus the more secure version with 3 loops. 2 loops are all you really need imo, it's faster to tie than 3 turns and more secure than 1 turn. Just thought I'd through that out there! Very comprehensive tutorial video! Good work mate :D

@@Willy-the-Fire-Putter-Outter 1 wrap should be sufficient for braid to braid (though I wouldn't risk it, I go for the big kitties, well I try anyway lol.) 2 wraps mono to mono I would think, and 3 for mono to fluoro.

Nope. Sorry. 1. Not all Knots are knots. Complications in cordage include knots, bends, hitches and splices plus ornamentals. So joining two pieces together would be a "bend". From a visual standpoint, 1. Use "point-of-view" so watcher can duplicate, 2. Why use little micro-ropes like shoelaces ? Go larger for visual ease, 3 Use contrasting, solid background, not similar color with patterns, 4.Hands need to be out of the way. Pace is good ... slow so a person can follow. Voice is good... "loud and clear". Thanks.

The video was excellent. I've seen many on YT that were not even close. Nothing wrong with the background, the red & black colors easily stand out, my hands were rarely in the way, Everything was made very clear. Unfortunately you cannot satisfy everyone, but I sure do satisfy more than 90%, and that is great. :-) Thanks for watching.

The knots are not very visual because you used a thin shoelace. Alot of the knots are strong, but a knot has also to be UNdo. A lot of your knots are very hard to UNdo!
