How to Tie The Shower Spider! AKA the Argentine Apps

Ойын-сауық

This variation of the Apps Worm has become one of my favorite attractor flies.
One of the first times I used the Argentine Apps was, as the pattern's name would suggest, on Lago Strobel, AKA Jurassic Lake. As the fly came into view on my first cast, three rainbows between 10-15 pounds followed the fly. They ran out of room before taking it. I made another cast and caught one of them almost immediately. Using a 4-6 strip pause, retrieve trout find the action of this fly tough to resist.

Thanks Phil! Awesome tie as always! I'm not planning on taking any trips to Argentina anytime soon, but I'll definitely have to spin some of these up to try out on some Colorado still waters. Hope all is well!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. This fly works on North American trout too. Cheers, Phil

I've tied what I all thread worms with this stretchy floss, and instead of superglue one can use Sally Hansen's hard as nails or another brand of clear fingernail hard top coating to keep it all together. =)

Hi, You can certainly use other coatings. I was being true the originator of the Apps Worm Peter Appleby. He preferred using superglue as it did not negatively impact the color of the Glo Brite Floss body. Cheers, Phil

It worked well for me. A couple of brisk strips from lowed by a pause worked well. I hope you enjoy success with it too. I will be back there again in December. Cheers, Phil

what in the world is this fly? is this like mop? not impressionistic, but just stuff tied to a hook that fish seem to bite for some reason?

Hi, It is a version of Englishman Peter Appleby’s Apps Worm. You can see that video on my channel too. Peter originally tied his pattern to suggest chironomid larva (bloodworm). You can fish the fly using a brisk retrieve as an attractor. The legs kick all over the place when fished in this manner. You can also use a slow hand twist retrieve and fish this pattern ins more natural subtle manner. As with most flies, it all depends on the trout’s preferences. Cheers, Phil

Have you tried this fly on warm water species? I’m thinking it would work great on bluegill and crappie just fine.

Hi, I haven’t had the chance yet but there is no reason why it wouldn’t work. Cheers, Phil

So if you were to make this a balanced fly ,how far forward would you put the bead

You would have to experiment a bit to find the balance point. One of the benefits of the Head Turner beads is if you attach the fly to your tippet using a clinch knot it will hang balanced. Cheers, Phil

I'm wondering if this could work under an indicator? On my local lakes, of course 🤔

I have yet to catch a fish on an Apps Worm Pattern.... I know they work, just not for me yet

The would definitely work under an indicator. You could also use a floating or Midge Tip line coupled with a slow steady hand twist. Cheers, Phil

Keep trying Jason. Like most attractor patterns, they either work or they don’t. Each day and lake can be different. Cheers, Phil.

@@mikekuczynski1552 Hi Mike, On their day this version and the original, unweighted Apps Worm (see this video on my channel) work unbelievably well. And on other days, as with other attractors, not so well. We’ll work stashing a few in Your fly box though in a variety of colours. Cheers, Phil
