Tie This Simple Callibaetis Dun | Stillwater Dun

The Stillwater Dun is one of my favourite Callibaetis mayfly dun imitations.
Although we typically don't see as much surface-feeding fish in productive lakes as we do in rivers and streams, stillwater trout have adapted to feeding near the bottom where it is safer and where most of their food lives. However, when trout do come up to the surface to feed, patterns such as my Stillwater Dun are well worth having in your fly box.
Stillwater Dun
Hook: Daiichi 1120 #12-#16
Thread: Semperfli Classic 8/0, Grey, Rust, Olive Dun or Tan
Tail: MFC Micro Barred Fibbets, Black/White
Body & Thorax: MFC Frog's Hair Dubbing, Callibaetis
Hackle: Whiting Saddle, Natural Grizzly or Grizzly Dyed Dun
Wing: EP Trigger Point Fibers or Semperfli Poly Yarn, Grey
Sighter: Semperfli Poly Yarn or EP Trigger Point Fibers, Pink

I agree the Parachute Adams is a great Callibaetis adult imitation. It is well represented in my fly box. I always like to have alternatives too. Cheers, Phil

Great looking fly Phil! Question, why use a heavy gauge nymph hook instead of a dry fly hook ? Cheers and hope you are both well.

Great question. I find the heavier hook holds up better when chasing larger trout. A lighter wire Daichi 1130 would also work well. Cheers, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing ah ok, I thought the heavy gauge nymph hook would sink it...if prefer using it over a light gauge dryfly hook. I'll tie some with it...The bow river rainbows can straighten hooks in a hurry :)

Nice . I was just rowing across our lake a few day ago and there was a massive callibaetis hatch they were all in my hair and beard and all in my wife’s hair . Going to tie some of these up and give them a try . Thanks for sharing
