One of the best knot tying videos, makes it incredibly simple

I've looked at so many videos on this but just couldn't do it, but the way you create the loop THEN lay that up against the piece of line you're joining makes it so much simpler! Thankyou, I can finally confidently tie this knot!

Excellent video Miles, as I don't tie this knot that often I always refer to it when tying. One thing I've noticed on large diameter differences, for eg 20lb main line 60lb leader, was that 7 turns with the thick line and 12 with the thin line gave the best results I spent a couple of days during the first lockdown doing various testing! Also found that as per the "Tackle Box" stats, most braids break at around 60% to 80% of their claimed breaking strains.

Just got into Spodding, will be doing this knot shortly with my 20lb Spomb Braid and 50lb Spomb Leader.

Hi, I would use a back to back blood (or clincher) knot. You'll find the tag ends sit in the middle of the knot and slide through the rings really nicely.

Hi, I think the back to back blood/clinch knot is best for the following reason. The tag ends of the knots leave the knot at the centre of it as opposed to the leading edge of the knot. It seems to go through the guides better. It's just as strong as a back to back grinner but just casts a bit better. It's what Mark Hutchinson and I used always. Remember the number of turns in the knot is to do with the diameter and 'slipperyness' of the lines. So 10lb mono mainline would have 5 turns and 50lb Arma Kord would be ok with 5 or 6 but a more slippery braid would need 7 - 10 turns. You'll need to experiment a little but 10lb mono and 50lb Arma Kord I can recommend.

Hi Myles i've been using just loop to loop connections for tying my hooklengths to mainline which i learned from your videos. Hooklengths are 2.6lb breaking strain mono tied to 4lb mono mainline. Are these loop to loop connections always fine to use for tying two lines together regardless of the diameter or type of line? when might i need to use this back to back grinner or blood knot? your videos really are the best everything explained and clearly displayed with the camera perfectly. Has helped me massively cheers.

Hi, I'm glad the videos are a help and thanks for the feedback. Ok so for light mono lines that are of similar diameter such as the ones you are using I suggest you use loop to loop connections. With a little practice you'll get the loops nice and small. Either a perfection loop or a simple overhand knot. If you are testing you're tackle to the limit I'd go with the perfection loops. Back to back grinners are great in all lines of similar diameter to each other. Blood knots are great in fluorocarbon and mono of similar diameter. When you have one really stiff thick line (including single strand wire) and more supple line or braid you can use an Albright knot. I hope that helps and not confuses you. Thanks Myles and yea i've had a fair bit of practice since i first saw your video on the Perfection Loop so now i know how to make the loops to the sizes i want them by just pulling on the second loop round my thumbnail so it comes right up to the tip of my thumbnail so its nice and small. Have since made quite a few hooks to nylon and i always use the Perfection loop. At some point i may well tie lines of significantly different diameter but i dont know why i would bother, all i do now is connect my mainline to hook to nylon via loop to loop and thats it, and all my hooks to nylon have loops on them so i'd never tie those with anything but a loop to loop. Can you give me an example of when i'd have to use a back to back grinner/blood/albright knot? are these just for more complicated rigs most associated with just specimen Carp fishing? at the moment i just coarse fish with light gear and so far my biggest fish has been just under 3lb but i can see myself plunging into proper Carp fishing at some point. Hi, Yes for the type of fishing you are currently doing, loop to loop connections are great. To be honest, for general carp fishing a grinner knot to connect your mainline to a swivel and your hook link to the other end of it will be all you need. Back to back knots would only really be used for shockleaders when casting at very long range. There are some clever connectors which allow you to simply tie a loop in the end of your hook link. Then only a simple grinner or blood knot is needed to attach your mainline to a lead core or similar leader or just to a swivel. There are so many ways to skin a cat so to speak. They all catch fish!

Cheers Myles you have me wondering about shockleaders, what are they used for? and with leadcore is that just used to help a heavy rig stay pinned to the surface?

Hi Fred, The Albright is a good knot, but designed for when you are tying a very thick stiff line to a thin or supple line. Please se the video about Albright knots on my channel. The back to back grinner is stronger if you want to tie lines of more similar diameter. There are a lot of different knots used in fishing and that is for a reason they are all best for a certain situation and so knowing when to use what knot is very important.

This is the back to back uni knot.(double uni)

Confused here, grinner is different from the uni,, this is a uni to uni knot, the grinner starts like a blood knot, then loop and the same amount of turns back over like the uni, creating a stronger, neater knot. Please correct me if I am wrong though

Elliott Green . General consensus is the Grinner knot is the same as the Uni, same knot, different continents, same application, same great holding power! Hope that clears up any confusion. Regards Clive from deepest Dorset

I know Mario. Everywhere else in the world calls in a Uni knot or Universal knot but for some reason in the UK it's called a grinner. Go figure!

I know in the rest of the world it's called a double uni knot but in the UK it's called a double grinner. I have worked in fishing all over the world including the US and I know it's the same knot. It is in UK fishing books, magazines etc and has been for years. I'm afraid teaching a nation to call a knot by something different is beyond me!
