How to Tie PVC into Cast Iron Hub | Episode 11

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We've spent some time pulling the old cast iron plumbing out of this house. Now, Mike is going to show us how to connect PVC into the cast iron hub so that we can redo the plumbing in our property with PVC instead of cast iron.

    Alot easy way is to just use a rubber mallet, been doing it for over 20 years never had an issue , I'm a self-employed licensed master plumber in 3 states and the easiest way is to use plumbers grease or dawn dishwashing liquid and a rubber mallet, saves time and you have more control

    If I have a difficult gasket to install I put it in boiling water for a few minutes. Lube up the pipe with dish soap. fish out the gasket with a wood stick drop it in the hub and then put the lubed up pipe in. If you work fast it goes in easy

    Good video. I have one suggestion. Prior to putting the gasket in the cast iron, put the pvc pipe in the gasket all the way. Make a mark or use tape on the pvc at where you want the pvc to finish. Then remove the PVC from the gasket and proceed as usual. Takes the guesswork out as to whether it is in properly. Also liquid hand soap is a good lubricant.

    Super helpful video - thanks for that! I have basically this setup in my house with a big 4” cast iron wye embedded in the basement floor and I’m looking to replace everything above that with PVC. I even have basement laundry (like you mention in the video) and as such need to tee off as close as possible to the fitting in the floor… …which leads to a question: can I plug a 4x4x2 street santee directly into the rubber gasket? Or does it have to be pipe or that reducer fitting you showed? Just looking at options to get the laundry drain as low as possible. Should note that I don’t have the fittings/gasket in hand yet it’s possible the street wouldn’t even fully seat but figured I’d ask.

    I need to replace my 4 inch tee with a clean out on it. Only thing is the pipe going to the outside exits the house about 5 ft. up the wall horizontally not through the floor vertically. This seems like the right method but fear that getting the new sdr fitting/gasket pushed into place could be a bit challenging.

  • @JewswithScrews

    @JewswithScrews

    Mike says he does it all the time horizontally just make sure if you use a piece of pipe bevel it a lot and freeze it or you can cut a rib off the gasket but if you get the sdr fitting it will slide in no problem

I used ABS and was a super tight fit into the fernco. and where I wanted to put the temporary 2 by 4, well the pex was there and the beam was notched, MOTHERFATHER ! There was a label on the pipe and I used that to gauge how far in I actually had pushed it in. TOmorrow, will cut it a little, fit fitting and Y, and run it to toilet flange. Yes, this technique will work after you remove any dirt or concrete away from the car iron hub. This example was a vertical example. This watertight connection will also be watertight if the pipe is horizontal. You may want to build something that you can use to create leverage to push the pvc pipe into the rubber gasket inside the hub coupling, to make it easier to force the pvc pipe into the rubber gasket.
