How to Tie PVC into Cast Iron Hub | Episode 11
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
We've spent some time pulling the old cast iron plumbing out of this house. Now, Mike is going to show us how to connect PVC into the cast iron hub so that we can redo the plumbing in our property with PVC instead of cast iron.

Shalom Aleichem! Just found your channel brother! Life long jewish carpenter here. I just bought a house in eastern Ohio built in 1918. The home has been vacant 33 years. The plumbing and electrical is all original. I begin the rehab of the house in 2 weeks. Thanks for posting this video!
Alot easy way is to just use a rubber mallet, been doing it for over 20 years never had an issue , I'm a self-employed licensed master plumber in 3 states and the easiest way is to use plumbers grease or dawn dishwashing liquid and a rubber mallet, saves time and you have more control

I know this was a year ago but is that a good seal on a horizontal pipe ? I want to change my drains to pvc but the connection to the septic through the foundation is cast iron. There is a junction packed with jute and lead I am guessing...
0:08 That has got to be the most clever channel name I have ever seen! XD At least, I know what to expect when installing one.
Thank you for recording and posting this valuable educational video.

If I have a difficult gasket to install I put it in boiling water for a few minutes. Lube up the pipe with dish soap. fish out the gasket with a wood stick drop it in the hub and then put the lubed up pipe in. If you work fast it goes in easy
Flap disc works really nice for beveling PVC.
finally found the video to help me. thank you so much.

Good video. I have one suggestion. Prior to putting the gasket in the cast iron, put the pvc pipe in the gasket all the way. Make a mark or use tape on the pvc at where you want the pvc to finish. Then remove the PVC from the gasket and proceed as usual. Takes the guesswork out as to whether it is in properly. Also liquid hand soap is a good lubricant.
thanks for the class!
Good job ! That's what real plumber looks like in the field. Plumbing is a heavy, physically demanding, dirty work. Be aware of KZread plumbers in neon shirts and brand new tools with minimal experience. They misrepresent the trade
A little soap is the key to helping the pvc slide in easy
I came across a " old plumbers trick". After you bevel the end of the pvc you cut a small notch ( 3/4" x 1/2"). This lessons the diameter enough to ease the pipe in. It works great. Great channel by the way 👍

Super helpful video - thanks for that! I have basically this setup in my house with a big 4” cast iron wye embedded in the basement floor and I’m looking to replace everything above that with PVC. I even have basement laundry (like you mention in the video) and as such need to tee off as close as possible to the fitting in the floor… …which leads to a question: can I plug a 4x4x2 street santee directly into the rubber gasket? Or does it have to be pipe or that reducer fitting you showed? Just looking at options to get the laundry drain as low as possible. Should note that I don’t have the fittings/gasket in hand yet it’s possible the street wouldn’t even fully seat but figured I’d ask.

In my case, I was able to use a clamp (twist to tighten type) to get the ABS pipe inserted. It helps if you put a cap on the pipe as it provides the clamp with surface area while protecting the pipe wall.
If your in Illinois you cannot use push gaskets a above ground. You'd need to use oakum/lead or no hub couplings.
@JewswithScrews

We’re not in Illinois but good to know
I need to replace my 4 inch tee with a clean out on it. Only thing is the pipe going to the outside exits the house about 5 ft. up the wall horizontally not through the floor vertically. This seems like the right method but fear that getting the new sdr fitting/gasket pushed into place could be a bit challenging.
@JewswithScrews
Жыл бұрын
Mike says he does it all the time horizontally just make sure if you use a piece of pipe bevel it a lot and freeze it or you can cut a rib off the gasket but if you get the sdr fitting it will slide in no problem
I bought an older house and it has the same setup you were working on and it didn't have a gasket so everytime someone flushed the toliet it would leak. I'm going to be doing it the way you did but was wondering do you have a link to the 4in rubber gasket you used so i know i got the right one?

@@JewswithScrews I got it and it took me 3 hours !! the cast iron was at a 45, so no straight shot to push. I used ABS and was a super tight fit into the fernco. and where I wanted to put the temporary 2 by 4, well the pex was there and the beam was notched, MOTHERFATHER ! There was a label on the pipe and I used that to gauge how far in I actually had pushed it in. TOmorrow, will cut it a little, fit fitting and Y, and run it to toilet flange. Has to be better than the wiggly job the last guy did - hey, why is there 1/2 gallon size plumber's putty container here ? I found out why. Onward and upward !

How does the pre made beveled pvc stay inside the gasket? Seems like it would be loose. Do you need to glue it?
Just did this...I'm not an engineer or a plumber, but...fernco needs to redesign these things. It shouldn't take a 6 foot bar to install a pvc pipe. This is for household drains and sewers, after all...not rocket fuel!

No, don't cut off ribs, use dawn dish soap to slide it it. It is water salable and washes off.

To help to get the pvc pipe in the hole use silicone spray.
same idea with the horizontal tie in ? that's what I am trying to figure out, the previous "best man" I had working on it, is long gone and this ABS to cast iron joint wiggles ! WTH, surely it will leak once we start using it, right ? thanks for this video
Question. I want to do something simmular but above the 3" PVC peice I'm putting in it will go back to the vertical 4" cast which runs through 2 floors and out the roof (its very heavy) How can I support all that cast above to make my PVC splice?
Wife said no expensive stuff😅
Now you DIYers know why plumbers don’t bite their nails or now you should know.
Can you use that gasket on the horizontal run as well or will it leak compared to the vertical gravity fed vent. I have something very similar to work on and my run is horizontal.

I don’t know the brand and model number for gasket you have to go to plumbing supply house and ask for soil gasket the kind they have at depot sucks
They make a lubricant just for this application. Don't use PVC glue, is bad on the rubber boot.
What is the name of the manufactured PVC piece you purchased that was made to fit into the soil gasket? I have a situation where I can't use much force to insert the PVC pipe.

Duck butter every time.
Isn't this why Fernco connectors are made?
I have about an old lead toilet pipe that broke and has about 3 inches of lead still connected to the iron stack hub tie in. Would it be smarter to remove the lead and connect as you have shown or shove the CPVC inside the remaining lead and clamp it with the wrap around coupling? By the way this is an upstairs toilet so it's above my head (so I'll have limited leverage)
@JewswithScrews

Mike says he would def go back to cast iron. Don't tie into the lead. Bevel the shit out of it to make it easier to get in. And make sure you get the same gasket we have, not the ones from Home Depot

Yes, this technique will work after you remove any dirt or concrete away from the car iron hub. This example was a vertical example. This watertight connection will also be watertight if the pipe is horizontal. You may want to build something that you can use to create leverage to push the pvc pipe into the rubber gasket inside the hub coupling, to make it easier to force the pvc pipe into the rubber gasket.
My cast iron is 5 inch od and all they have is 4 inch.
