Six years after you uploaded this video and still helping DIYers. Thanks! I was surprised to see the hub under the house, thought I had only a section of cast iron to deal with. Now I know how to fix it.

Did this same job yesterday. mine was very tight. I could not get it to fit until (1) I got the rubber donut hot with some hot water and (2) to the PVC in the freezer to shrink it slightly. Once it was hot and a little lube, it went in. Beveling the lip is must. Hope this helps someone else.

There is a special adapter called a "hub adapter" or a "cast-iron pipe adapter" that is made to use with the rubber Fernco gasket ("donut"). It goes on the end of the PVC pipe to make it easier to get the pipe properly seated down into the hub and Fernco gasket. (Also a little dish soap or silicone spray would help as several other people suggested!)

Service Weight (SV) refers to the thickness of the cast iron. Extra Heavy Weight (XH) is the other kind. They can be used on the horizontal, but the pipe should probably be well supported.

I usually use silicone spray lubricant, and sometimes a little silicone grease applied to the pipe end and the Fernco to help install these rubber Fernco couplings. As someone also mentioned, which I have used in a pinch, cheap liquid dish soap also works good as a lubricant.

J CaaM you are correct. In my experience, I have found that when installing a hose in a awkward area as when working in the automotive field, spraying a bit of silicone will make the hose slide easily into place, and then when the silicone dries it actually helps seal the hose in place. So I was wondering about the same effect when sliding the PVC pipe into the rubber sleeve

patrick donegan ABS has been recalled by nibco and other manufacturers in almost every U.S. state due to shrinkage. Just head down to your locally mobile home park and try to find an ABS joint without drip stains. It's just for sump pumps now. Good idea using recycled material, but too much shrinkage long term.

Xion Temoc I use a little heat from a torch, you really don’t need to do this if you don’t want but if you do make sure you’re wearing a gas mask and have good ventilation. Anyways if you clean up around the top of the pipe and then take a medium small chisel “I used a 6” chisel” then with the chisel find a groove between the pipe and the lead coated sealant and gentle tap the chisel with a hammer to make the groove a little bigger and slowly work your way around the pipe but don’t rush it and go a little deeper each time you go around the pipe. Maybe you or someone else has another way to do it but I found this was the easiest method for me
