    I had a wigwag fail tonight too. The beefy T sucked up so much dye it wouldn't go through to the middle, then I lost my pattern on the other side, THEN I ran out of 2 colors of dye that were custom mixes. Ugh!! I'm so done right now. I said eff it, and coated the back with black lol. I'm definitely doing the spray n pray right now.

    I don't think it's a fail at all...just my newbie opinion. The color differences are beautiful & I like the pink & white shades at the bottom. They contrast well with the dark saturation at the top. I'd proudly sport this look & feel pretty proud of myself. Just like with my sewing & quilting, most won't see "mistakes" until you point them out. 😊

    Thank you so much, Ann. In the realm of wig wag tie dye this shirt isn’t correct. I, of course, can see value in this shirt. It was a plain white shirt, and POW, now it’s not. I want my KZread channel to be a teaching channel. So, with that being said, I feel it is important to show all aspects of tie dye. In this scenario I want people to learn what not to do. Still a very pretty shirt! I don't love liquid dyeing. I don't love dyeing dry either. Do you think, had the shirt been slightly dampish, maybe the saturation would have been better? I watched your other wig wag video prior to this one...both shirts are lovely :)

  • @BelladonnaDyesCo

    @BelladonnaDyesCo

    These work best with liquid dye. Yes, it being dry made it difficult to dye because the dye was being repelled. I prefer to dye damp. Saturation is key in order for the pattern to show up properly. Use the needle tip bottles and work the tip into the pleats before setting it off to batch. ❤️🌈

    My issues are just that sometimes fades and isn't bright after washout. When it happens three times in a row you really want to bang your head on something! This was a good tutorial on the pattern and honestly I'd happily wear the result! But I know how frustrating it is to not have something come out to your vision. My two MOST complex tie and dye patterns came out faded pastel so for sure it sux lol. From this thought it feels like lots can be learned, the pattern is good and you just need to not let it dry as far as that, maybe keep it in a plastic bag until ready to dye? I know you've got a Panda so you can make it as dry as you want with that before application :)

    Not all my shirts turn out perfect. That’s why I shared this. Hopefully it will help someone know what not to do. Shirts do fade a little after they are washed and dried. That is normal. As long as you use soda ash and batch for 24 in 70° or higher keeping it moist, with dye mixed at proper strength you should be ok. It’s a bummer when they are disappointing. ☹️ ❤️🌈

    One of my early tie dyes, I made really bad color choices. It was a long A line dress that I did a bulls eye with repeated bands at the hemline.... in bright red, bright green, and bright yellow. Looked like a stoplight. I overdyed in a gray wash and that still wasn't enough. So I did a spiral of purple dye (I think it was lilac?) from the same center as the bulls eye, and it turned out marvelous!

    I just did a Wig Wag fail myself. Today actually.😩I had the same problem as you, my shirt was too dry so there was barely any saturation. That and since I had some Tulip dyes left, in the colors I hadn't replaced with dharma dyes yet, I used the Tulip instead. Since Tulip dye fades and one of the colors I didn't have for example was lavendar, I used the purple Tulip dye in hopes that it would fade to lavendar. Instead it just washed out.😩 Also, I didn't make the lines of dye thick enough. Even the black lines didn't connect to create the wig wag.🤦🏽‍♀️ I'm going to try it again though. You're right, saturation is important.

    Oh boy, I feel your pain! The thing to take away from your experience is all the knowledge of what not to do next time to improve your next project. Even the fails are valuable. I find that a damp shirt, especially with the wig wag helps tremendously with saturation. Not soaking wet, spun out damp. The fold is rather simple, even dye placement isn’t that hard. IT’S THE DARN SATURATION. 😭 😂 You’ll have better luck next time, I know it. ❤️🌈

    Great question, Kathy. ☺️ What would have saved this project would have been damp dyeing, but ok, it was dry so... I should have used the fine tip and poked it into the folds and added more dye. I shouldn’t have given up so quickly and put it off to batch with all that white. Smaller pleats from jump street and a much thinner shirt. This is a Gildan Hammer Tee and it’s quite thick. Just about everything was stacked against this poor shirt. I learned a lot from this experience. I hope it helps you have success. I’d love to see your results ❤️🌈

    I’ve considered trying to re-tie it and dye it... it could be soaked in soda ash and re-dyed for sure. Just know that if you choose to re-dye something you need to start from scratch. Pre-wash, soak in SA, all that. You’ll want to separate out the SA, because you might get some bleeding and you don’t want dye in your SA bucket. 😁❤️🌈

    Great question. Soda ash is 100% necessary. It raises the pH of the natural cotton fibers to 10-11 so the procion dye can react and attach to the fabric for long lasting vibrant colors. Without the soda ash the dye will fade drastically after a few washes and look dull. I use it for all my dye projects. I hope this helps. ❤️🌈

    Sodium silicate solution is used to produce a high pH in order to set fiber reactive dye on cotton or silk. It is often used as an after-fix, by painting the dye onto the fabric, letting it dry, then painting on the sodium silicate, leaving the silicate to react with the dyed fabric for an hour, then washing it out.
