How to tie a weighted musky deceiver fly - DT Perch Fly by Musky Fool

Спорт

Learn to tie the DT Perch Deceiver Fly with Josh Smeltzer from Musky Fool Fly Fishing Co. This fly is inspired by other great deceiver patterns that have been tied by several great anglers with a unique color scheme and bulky shoulders that will entice even the laziest of predatory fish. The heavy eyes and voluptuous body give this puppy a gentle rise and dive as the angler retrieves it back. It's best suited for small rivers and lakes and will catch everything from smallmouth to large musky.
This fly was tied with only two tail feathers but you can add 2-4 more to suit your liking. When tying in the NMF Flash Fiber always favor giving the top a bit more material than the bottom and that goes for length as well. Make those top fibers just a bit longer than the bottom one's as you veil them backward. There's also a sweet spot with the amount of synthetics you use as you tie... Too little and they won't create enough profile and veil properly, too much and the fly will become too bulky too quickly. Be patient and gradually build up the body shop as you move towards the head.
When tying the head with blended Strung Fuzzy Fiber and NMF Wavelength flash you're looking to create a lot of mass and pack everything in tight. This will provide for a great base to ultimately sculpt the head with scissors and prevent noticeable gaps when transitioning from behind the eyes to the front of the eyes. The first clump of Strung Fuzzy Fiber and NMF should be about 5" after you rip stack and blend it. Then as you move forward they should be successively smaller stacks. This will save materials and be easier to work with while you're tying. You can spend hours trimming these heads to perfection which is quite soothing but ultimately decide when you're done and then be done.
As always don't be afraid to experiment with blending in other materials and you can even swap out feathers with synthetics to make this more of a flash tail fly. This fly can be fishing on floating to full sink lines and cover a large part of the water column and it's best fished on 7-9wt rods.
