How to Tie a Dropshot Knot Like a Tournament Angler

If you love the neat, perpendicular knots on professional, pre-tied drop shot rigs - but aren't sure how to create them; this video shows you in under two minutes.
For tons more tips and stories on ultralight lure & Bait Finesse System fishing check out our free BFS club: fishingdiscoveries.com/bfs-an...
This video shows that - as well as being a really simple knot - with a little practice it is really quick to tie. Although people often use the Palomar knot (and it is really strong), it isn't possible to get the hook to sit out at 90 degrees to your line (even when you tuck the tag down through the hook-eye).
The dropshotting knot demonstrated is custom-designed to hold the hook out at a perfect right angle - and to fish with the hook-point upwards. As well as great presentation of your lure, the hook position helps create the best conditions for getting a reliable hook-hold.

    Nice one A Mak :) I should try this as a dropper substitute some time on a multi fly rig...I guess I've always overlooked it because I get lower hook up rates when using "New Zealand" droppers (compared to actual droppers). However, I wonder if having the hook shank perpendicular to the leader would improve that? Paul.

  • @dr01d21

    Thank you very much for making the video. Very clear instructions! I really like that this knot secures very tightly to the eyelet and the shank of the hook. Which type of eyelet is on the hooks you use? Are they completely rounded with no gaps? I've had a few problems using this knot with standard hooks. The slightly open portion of the eyelet seems to be cutting my line after 20-30 minutes of fishing. I've seen high quality hooks that have completely closed eyelets (either welded or sealed with plastic). Do you use that type of hook? Have you encountered this problem with the eyelet cutting the line?

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    The hooks I often use are sold by the brand "Fox" in the UK and they seem pretty good for not having burrs or large gaps where the eye butts up against the shank. Touching wood, I've not experienced problems with the knot being cut in this manner. If you have problems, taking a very fine file to any burrs and closing down the eye with the smooth part of the jaws in a set of trace-crimp fishing pliers (for example) might help. Paul

    Do you guys have recommendations for what style weight is best? I’ve used Tungsten’s tear drop and those are expensive so would just a simple split shot sinker work as well?

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Mitch, it probably depends how much rock/rip-rap you are fishing over. The slim tungsten cylinder weights or elongated tear-drop "free rig" can be a bit less likely to snag. With that said, sometimes you'll be snagging up a lot regardless of what shape weight you use (so going for cheaper options might we be the best tactic). At the end of the day, the presentation itself is not much affected - whatever you want to use for weight. As long as it is heavy enough for the bait and depth of water - plus any current you might have - then you are basically good to go. Paul

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    The only difference might be fishing over rip-rap where the slimmer weight might just be a little less prone to snagging. With non-toxic swanshot, you can crimp them on just hard enough so you can slide them off if you get snagged of course. Mind you, swanshot have gone up in price compared to what they were in my youth haha. Paul

    Is it good for saltwater fishing

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    Жыл бұрын

    It should be, yes. It just depends on how much movement you want with your bait (a longer "snood" style trace setup would give you a more "flowing", mobile presentation - though you may lose some bite-detection sensitivity). Depending on the species of fish you are targeting, you might find that you get a better hook-up rate with even a short snood or "dropper" (it depends if having the hook directly attached to the line running down to your sinker makes it more difficult for the fish to suck your bait into its mouth). You may also want to test it for strength using the exact line and hook you will be fishing with.

    Is it bad if you go more than 4 loops

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    Жыл бұрын

    I'd guess it isn't automatically "bad" - just that there is unlikely to be any additional gain since the first 3 turns will probably be taking all the force (with one extra for insurance!). Depending on the line you use, you might get to a point where adding extra turns and pulling the line back on itself through those turns to tighten the knot might wrinkly up (and possibly damage) your line. The best tip I can give is to do some experiments with the exact line and hook you want to use and test out how strong it is (and if the line gets curly/damaged during tying). Paul.

    Is This knot strong enough to hold bigger fish

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    @FishingDiscoveries

    Жыл бұрын

    As with any knot you can match the strength of your line to the size of fish you are targeting in order to "force" the knot to be strong enough (and everyone's definition of a big fish is different). I haven't directly tested it against, say, a Palomar knot (and I'd expect the Palomar to be stronger when tied in the same line and using the same size hook). However, in my experience it isn't a "weak" knot as I've used it in 6lb breaking strain line on fish that have pulled drag on medium/light setups in freshwater. The best way to tell if the knot has enough strength for your own fishing is to tie it up on the line and hook you'll be using and pull for a break. If you find there is enough strength then you might want to try it out to get the benefit of the hook position for presentation and hook-ups. Paul

  • @FishingDiscoveries

    It could be down to doing things the way you've always done them - or possibly that the Palomar could be a bit stronger for particular fishing situations. I guess a lot of fishing is about trading off costs and benefits to get the best combination of strengths for the situation you're in.

    That's a surprise to hear Johnny - You just thread the line in through the underside of the hook eye, pass the tag end of the line back on itself so that it forms a loop (with the tag end crossing the main line where the hook-eye is) - then pass the hook through that loop maybe 3 or 4 times and pull tight. Maybe give it a go with some hi vis line and a hook? You might just find you can do it after one or two tries. Good luck, Paul
