About Live Free or Die:
Live Free or Die follows five members of a remote but growing American subculture of self-proclaimed Re-Wilders who’ve vowed to leave the modern world behind in order to survive in backwoods, deserts, mountains and swamps by hunting their own food, building their own shelters, and finding their own water - using only their own two hands, sharp intuition and time tested methods.

Hey cameraman! How about showing us a single unbroken shot that captures the whole throw and flight of the spear. No doubt, a repeat in slow mo would reveal a few interesting things too.
This is the 1st time I've ever even heard of such of a tool. Wow and cool.

Kinda obscure, but probably one of the most used tools in human history. This was the tool that set us apart from the bears, wolves, and cougars. When you think about it, this tool directly lead us to becoming the apex predators we are today.
@suatchaglan7446

@@cloaker7237 nah the use of flint is what separated us as that allowed for us to leap from just using a tool that’s pre made naturally to taking an item n changing its very form believe me to take some rocky flint n to selectively strike n pre think of the outcome you want working slowly till you have a tool that btw can be perfected more n more thinning n wat not anyway the fact we used flint wen we were hairier apes similar to chimps is wat separated us from other animals

@@senatorclaydavis5539 That was still a melee weapon, though. It was almost as dangerous to hunt with spears as it was to hunt with claws. It could be thrown, but not very far. That’s where the atlatl comes in. It (and the rock sling) were the first true ranged weapons in the known universe, giving us a MASSIVE edge in the world, one that directly put us on track for today
@rasmasyean

I heard that this, the bow, and the blowgun was what separated us from the other hominids. So the other spear users dominated their hunting grounds, but I suppose we never found evidence the other hominids were able to use a "two stage tool" so we prolly killed them all in competition when we met?
I'm native Australian and we make them too for hunting or fishing but ours are similar

They have likely been used by spear-throwing cultures everywhere, but the modern English term "atlatl" comes from Nahuatl.

At 0:47 he's wrong saying that atlatl is more accurate. It's actually less accurate than by throwing a javelin by hand as you don't have the fine control a wrist has. You can throw it faster but the downside is it's less accurate.
@jeremywilliams4762

It's not about faster but having that larger projectile point and dart shaft for taking down game much quicker. A skilled atlatl thrower can pass an entire dark almost through a deer.

I have thrown these for years and I've NEVER seen a full size spear in use. It should be 1/4 of that size. Further distance, better accuracy, more deadly. Idk what natives he "learned" from but that's waaaaay bigger than it should be. Small spears u can throw harder and they move faster

dont think the atlatl gives you more accuracy because it does not--they are almost impossible to aim except for a general area. in most cases natives throw them such as at a flock of birds and "hope for the best" For mammoth and large animals the atlats was in fact needed--they did not rush up with or throw spears like you envision--you cannot get the power.
@gunsnreelsoutdoors3796
5 жыл бұрын
Either you have never used an atlatl, or you haven't used one enough. A proficient thrower can get similar accuracy with an atlatl compared to the bow out to 20-25 yards. After that accuracy drops due to the drop of the darts due to their weight. Bows have an advantage of being able to carry more ammo, somewhat stealthier (you don't to step into the throw, just ruins accuracy) and have longer range. If you want to talk about shear killing power within 20 yard distances or less, the atlatl with a good dart is hands down Superior. My 100# longbow with a ~900 grain arrow doesn't even compare.
