About Live Free or Die:
Live Free or Die follows five members of a remote but growing American subculture of self-proclaimed Re-Wilders who’ve vowed to leave the modern world behind in order to survive in backwoods, deserts, mountains and swamps by hunting their own food, building their own shelters, and finding their own water - using only their own two hands, sharp intuition and time tested methods.

Kinda obscure, but probably one of the most used tools in human history. This was the tool that set us apart from the bears, wolves, and cougars. When you think about it, this tool directly lead us to becoming the apex predators we are today.

@@senatorclaydavis5539 That was still a melee weapon, though. It was almost as dangerous to hunt with spears as it was to hunt with claws. It could be thrown, but not very far. That’s where the atlatl comes in. It (and the rock sling) were the first true ranged weapons in the known universe, giving us a MASSIVE edge in the world, one that directly put us on track for today

I heard that this, the bow, and the blowgun was what separated us from the other hominids. So the other spear users dominated their hunting grounds, but I suppose we never found evidence the other hominids were able to use a "two stage tool" so we prolly killed them all in competition when we met?

At 0:47 he's wrong saying that atlatl is more accurate. It's actually less accurate than by throwing a javelin by hand as you don't have the fine control a wrist has. You can throw it faster but the downside is it's less accurate.

It's not about faster but having that larger projectile point and dart shaft for taking down game much quicker. A skilled atlatl thrower can pass an entire dark almost through a deer.

I have thrown these for years and I've NEVER seen a full size spear in use. It should be 1/4 of that size. Further distance, better accuracy, more deadly. Idk what natives he "learned" from but that's waaaaay bigger than it should be. Small spears u can throw harder and they move faster

I'll just tell you one thing: HuntPrimitive. Watch the videos on this channel about hunting using atlatl, you'll see with your own eyes that you're wrong.

dont think the atlatl gives you more accuracy because it does not--they are almost impossible to aim except for a general area. in most cases natives throw them such as at a flock of birds and "hope for the best" For mammoth and large animals the atlats was in fact needed--they did not rush up with or throw spears like you envision--you cannot get the power.

Either you have never used an atlatl, or you haven't used one enough. A proficient thrower can get similar accuracy with an atlatl compared to the bow out to 20-25 yards. After that accuracy drops due to the drop of the darts due to their weight. Bows have an advantage of being able to carry more ammo, somewhat stealthier (you don't to step into the throw, just ruins accuracy) and have longer range. If you want to talk about shear killing power within 20 yard distances or less, the atlatl with a good dart is hands down Superior. My 100# longbow with a ~900 grain arrow doesn't even compare.
