In this video I am going to model a super effective technique to model the correct way to think in endgames.

This is such phenomenal endgame advice about how to make a small plan based on "where could I make a passed pawn. What's stopping me? Can I remove what's stopping me? Do they have a legit defence?" If you look at this position and hope to jump from the position to the winning moves without that conversation with yourself, it's basically like trying to read a sentence in a foreign language without learning the words first. I guess it's not the same when there are concrete tactical considerations in an endgame, but without an obvious tactic, you've got to go from "how could I conceivably win" to "right, how do I make that happen?" And "what can they do about it?"

This is basically Silman’s idea of Target Consciousness applied specifically to the endgame. If the opponents king is a target, the win condition is checkmate and if it’s a weak pawn, the win condition is promotion. There’s a big chapter on it in HTRYC if anyone is looking for exercises and more instruction with this method of thinking

Coach Andras - I have noticed on youtube that once channels cross 20k subs they really take off. It looks like your channel is following the same pattern. You'll be at 100k subs in less than a year. Thank you for everything you do!

I kid you not this might be the most helpful video I’ve ever seen on forming a plan in the endgame. I tried this when analysing three of my past games and in all three I was able to come up with a plan that the engine does not totally hate(how often does that happen!) . Id love it if you could make another video on this topic with some more examples !

Formulating a clear win condition and then working out a plan to achieve it is how people move from being decent players to being good players in basically any competitive game I've ever played, from Magic: the Gathering to well, chess. it's especially useful in the games without perfect information and/or random factors. Having a clear goal in mind helps you to stop making moves on autopilot since what would otherwise be a good move may be straight up losing move in the endgame depending on the win condition that's left for you in the situation, and the ways opponent may try to stop it.

Glad i was able to identify the right win condition in the demo position! I'd say properly evaluating said condition will allow you to determine the efficacy of other long-term plans too - for instance in that position if you realize that two bishops vs rook cannot overwhelm and take the b-pawn, but bishop and rook vs rook can (with the other bishop running interference/making another threat), then you can clearly decide that you want to keep the rooks on the board, not trade them off

Glad I was able to find the winning plan here. I saw I had a potential outside passer and that's all I wanted to focus on. Of course this was after my initial lower elo feeling of oh let's just trade rooks and go from there.

So in the endgame, "win condition" is usually "I promote (first)"?

The two main winning plans are push your passed pawns and attack enemy weak pawns. Most other plans are usually inferior to these 2.

First won't be good enough in some scenarios, most often when the opponent promotes with check, and some endgames don't have pawns. Pawn promotion is the main theme of endgames, but the example shows that Andras's win condition concept is about position specifics. In this case it was getting White's b pawn out of the way.

  • @uefets

Now that you've spelled it out, this concept seems super obvious. I'm sure that, intuitively, I've applied it in some of my endgames already, but now it's definitely going to be something I'll be thinking about in every game that I play! Thanks for this great video!

Very nice concept in my opinion. The "win con." is indeed not that known or used in chess, however, it is the key part of most video games. I used to play League of Legends for years and playing for the "win condition" is one of the most basic strategic ideas there. And it is really a flashlight in the darkness. I think in chess most players actually forget about the fact that plans must be based on something. You can't just create a plan without recognizing the win con. Cool video! :)

In a broader sense most of the chess puzzles are this. You are required to find a move that would severely harm your opponent if not straight up checkmate them and give you a win down the line assuming you won't terribly blunder it.
