I think cleaning and reusing the thermostats is fine as long as their not terrible to begin with. They are easy to test after cleaning. This can save you any surprises on the restart.

Yes they definitely can be re used. and cleaning them in vinegar overnight is a cheap way to bring them back to a shiny and clean look. Retest is always recommended before putting them back

You don't have to take bolts out in any particular pattern it makes no difference at all. Putting them back in, you should use an alternating pattern to tighten them down. Half Force alternating across and back and forth and then final tightening full force alternating back and forth across. This is coming from a 40-year marine mechanic

Thanks for watching and the advice. Like you mentioned. Taking it off doesn’t matter the pattern, it’s just convenient for me and has become a habit.

nice--they should be a fail safe meaning they stay open when broke. mine is open as water discharge does not change temperature and I don't have any problems except that bolts have not moved and they are alminume and will sheer off so I will heat them or leave it alone since I live in mild Temperature of Texas and don't need it .

Sometimes the build up of salts and corrosion will actually keep the thermo from opening. thus why regular maintenance is a good idea. keeps things turning and keeps a piece of mind. however a sheered bolt may be a bigger pain then digging into something that's not giving an issue.

How do you check if it’s still working? Trow them in hot water?

  • @ReelTeaseFishing

You can double check with the manual or part number at what temp they open. Then carefully with a thermometer in place you can heat the water and see if the open witching the proper range. Then also take note to see that they fully close when in cooler water 👍🏽

Why don't manufacturers add grease or anti corrosive to bolts during assembly?

I think they do spray them with an anti corrosion spray but it’s only really for shipping purposes.

Yes several do spray the outside for transportation. Obviously does didily squat for bolt threads. 😃

After a good soak in pure vinegar for 24 hours use a hard bristle toothbrush and brush off the entire thermo specially the plunger that opens/closes the thermo.
