After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews in all kinds of magazines and online zines, I found Sue Spargo in 2015 through her Craftsy class, and my life took another turn. I have been designing in some form since I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, and have never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published some articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post for a few years, I have always come back to designing. It is my first love and remains so to this day.

    Love your beautiful work Ariane. Are you able to zoom out after you show us a stitch, to reveal to is what you are working on? I always have so many questions. Where do you get all your woolen fabric? ( it’s not all in Sue Spargo’s shop- I checked!). The lovely printed fabric that is the stem- what is that fabric? I will let you rest from my questions lol.

  • @ArianeZurcher212

    @ArianeZurcher212

    I love all your questions! So I kind of buy stuff wherever I am or whenever I see something interesting I'll grab a little piece of it. And then I went into a whole dyeing kick a few years ago and dyed tons of my own wools. Lots of the greens are from that period when I was doing lots of hand dyeing. The printed cotton fabric stem was something I bought a few years ago and of course cannot remember who are where. It might have been from Sue, I just can't remember. I have a feeling it was from Sue. ❤️ Oh and yes, I will try to remember to zoom out so you can see what I'm working on. Most of it is small 8" squares of wool that I applique a bunch of random stuff onto when I'm taking a break from designing and/or taping. I don't really spend much time thinking about it...

    Ummm, I’m going to use that stitch on my next circle! On another note, I have some gimp I ordered from SS, and while I know there are a lot of stitches you can do with it, do you have any recommendations on ones that work better with it? Thank you, Ariane!

    Wonderful! You must show what you do with the mountmellick in the FB group! I'd love to see. As far as gimp goes... it's beautiful as a bullion knot or french knot. As it can be a bit challenging to use for outline stitches since it's really a cord, I tend to keep to stitches such as using it as the laying down thread and couching it with something else. It's lovely used in combination with other threads. Play around with it and see what you think. And post it in the group!

    Patty, I got Sue to show me how to do the Palestrina knot using gimp. As Ariane says it’s challenging but you can do it. One thing is having a large eye to thread need to thread it thru. I think I used a short darner to stitch it. I’ll post a picture on Ariane’s group.

    well isn't that pretty fabulous! What is the stitch on the stem in your first demo? the one your thread kept catching on? It almost looks like a double cast on, however it looks like it is loose like a drizzle stitch. Thanks for sharing..

    This video was intriguing, but I had an issue with your video placement - the stitch you were demonstrating was frequently out of view at the top of the screen which was frustrating and distracting for me...having said this, I do enjoy learning all your techniques and would love to know more about the project you are working on--is there any overview of this project somewhere on your site?

    Hi Carol, yes, some of the older videos have that problem. I have gotten a bit better as time goes on. It’s a lot harder than it may look to demonstrate, keep the camera focused , stay within the small window frame, make sure the lighting is right and doesn’t create shadows, while being able to see what you’re doing with eyes that aren’t what they once were! As far as this piece goes, it’s just a square that’s piled up with so many others like it. I never got around to doing anything with it. It was just a demo. One of these days (years) when I have a bit more free time I’ll sew all the squares together… or not… who knows?! ❤️
