How to test your blood glucose (sugar) levels
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Watch a step by step guide on how to test your blood glucose levels. In order to perform a blood glucose test you will require your blood glucose meter, a test strip to hand, a lancing device and a monitoring diary to record the results of your blood glucose test.
Diabetes.co.uk's Benedict Jephcote runs through how to test your blood sugar. In this video, Benedict is using a OneTouch meter and test strips.

Thank you for this. 12 years from original posting and it helped me yesterday. The internet can be a wonderful place. God bless.
Thank you so much for the information, and respecting everyone's time with no fluff / intro / filler.
Of all the people on here showing how to check glucose your video was clearer .Even the nurse on here her video was not as good she needs to watch your video on how you explain the device .Thank you.
Straight to the point. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic and I was testing for the first time. I was becoming very frustrated because I'd tried three times (ruined three test strips) and it wasn't working I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Your video was a great help. Thank you again and take care.

You are not alone... My instructions were in Chinese!
Thank you for this video! This helped me learn how to test and teach me the tools on what I need to buy to to do it with. When I got GD my doctor gave me prescription for a meter and test strips only which I only got the meter approved and she didn't tell me I needed more items to test or explain anything really. I ended up having my son before I bought everything and the told me I didn't have diabetes when I got released from the hospital, but am having symptoms of my blood sugar still being off. I have to buy a new meter cause the test strips alone for the meter insurance gave me are $80 for 50 on top of other stuff I have to buy. I am now buying the cheaper one at Walmart and the other stuff I need. So thank you for this!
Thank you! Very clear and concise!
Thank you so much - I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes and went to get my kit yesterday and no one was able to assist me in how to do this myself. Your video has made me feel so much more comfortable.

If you don’t mind asking, did your gestational diabetes went away after you gave birth?
My doctor recommends this kit as it is more convenient than going back to the hospital all the time for weekly monitoring...thank you for the video...I have now an idea what needs to be done.
For anyone who was having the same problem as me. I kept not getting a reading so I poked myself about 7 times. I realize my error was that I was putting the blood on top of the testing strip (the gold part) where it actually needs to be on the side of the paper because then the blood goes between the papery layers and gets tested.
My grandmother recently got diagnosed and she really struggles with pricking her finger Thank you for this
Very Helpful, Thank You
Thanks for this video, I use the Freestyle Libre sensor with Ambrosia NightRider to check the glucose levels on the phone and sometimes I use watch to monitor the levels.
Great video and well done. Great and helpful responses too. Just found out have diabetes at 47. To Ayman, I freaked, but we move on, and stay focused on the good things we have. I had OCD/Acute Anxiety like at 6 yrs olds, and it sucks. I freaked too at first, but you'll get through it I am sure, just a little comment, for what it's worth. Best of luck to you all and thanks again for informative video. Peace.
Thank you so so much
These videos should go viral.
Very clear..thank you!
Thank you. My Dad is a resident in a skilled nursing (use that loosely) home. He is 84, was diagnosed with diabetes during a recent hospital stay, and had not had 1 test since returning! They have him on medication. So I managed to secure a test kit. Lost as to how it worked.

Thanks for giving important information
Thank you so much. I wasted 3 strips as I kept trying to get blood out from the top of my finger and it would produce a tiny drop of blood. Not enough for the strip. The side of my finger was less painful and produced enough blood to get a reading. I'm super happy it worked
good information....

Thank you. Im now helping my mom monitor her glucose, her sugar keeps shooting up after her Chemo treatments. Im helping her with insulin shots too.

It is best after pricking your finger to get a clean blood sample, is to wipe away the 1st bead of blood 🩸 and raise a 2nd bead of blood and wipe clean once more. Use the 3rd bead of blood for your test. You can often see a variation sometimes dropping 30 points or more in the last blood bead sample.
This video is bloody brilliant!
Thank you so much
Thank you so much, for explaining how to do this? Well appreciated.👏✅
Thank you Sir
Excellent
Lastly, any injuries or accidents may provide a chance to perform a quick blood sugar test, providing that the injury doesn't impede movement of hands or fingers, and that any hemorrhaging can be directed to the test strip.
Thnx for the video

Thanks -- I like the tip on least painful pricking site -- I'm still weirded out about measuring my blood glucose.
To avoid stick injuries, don't put the top back onto the lancet, just pop it straight into the sharps bin.

I need some help, info please. I'm really worried about my Blood Sugar levels, I have tested twice yesterday and twice yesterday , my results have been 3.1 mmol , 5.1 mmol and 1.1 mmol - something doesn't seem right? Is it possible to get these variations? Many thanks
Toppen.Bra jobbat.
something is not clear. when i turn on the meter it shows numbers etc. do i have to reset it and if so how? or do i just stick the strip in?
My experience with home blood tests and after doing a lab blood test on the same morning reading as 4.6 - 5.2 Check this out to know your blood ratio to feel really safe and secure.
@AnabolicMutant not all areas in your body are highly vascular. for adults, the side of the finger is chosen because it is highly vascular and contains less nerve endings. for babies, the heel of the foot is chosen. also, the side of the finger is less sensitive to pain while the tip of the finger has a dense nerve supply. the puncture site always matters because any alteration can affect the results.
I had to do that today. My finger is still sore
THANKS FROM BANGLADESH
did it hurt you
Good
how is it possible to have different readings from two different fingers, at the same time?
Do you have to dispose the lancet needle after one use?
thx
I never record my results in a Diary. It is rather annoying to do it every time, since I check my blood-glucose at least six times a day. Sometimes more than that. My Monitor keeps records of what my blood-glucose has been running, anyway.
Nice
What is a good number? How does this compare to an A1C test?
Hi.... can i ask you please. (what is a good level number reading on the machine to be at after doing a test. i have been diagnosed with type 1diabetes for a few years now. i have been taken two different forms of tablets to try to help control the diabetes. now i am being given a third tablet to try and help. also my doctor has given me one of these testing machines to check my blood levels. i was given no advice/help for using the machine. neither told what the readying after doing a test should try to be kept at etc. so i thank you for your video. plus any advice.....

Is thsi accurate? I mean can you diagnose yourself solely with this, since i dont want to do GTT, I thought I get one and test my levels for a while, thanks
Hi what is a normal sugar level results .i have just bought a machine to check mine and i cannot understand the instructions what your sugar level should be .can anyone help pls
i have a glucose meter through my medical insurance that i have. It shows different than yours. it will show up as numbers(ex:146) instead of a number and a decimal and number (3.6) what exactly does your number mean as opposed to mine? is mine to high?

do you have to have a lancing device? can you just use lancets?
@hanmaenen7337
6 жыл бұрын
I prick my finger with the same lancing device as seen here, a Microlet 2. You could just use the lancet, but I advise strongly against doing so as it hurts almost like a wasp sting because the fingers are loaded with nerves and are very sensitive. Lancing devices reduce pain to a slight sting, sometimes you feel just a tap. Before the lancing device came in, fingers were pricked with a miniature knife and that was really vicious. Really, use a lancing device! As an experiment I once stuck my finger with a lancet, my nurse did so once on her own finger. Her finger throbbed for 30 minutes afterwards! She would never, ever use a loose lancet for finger pricking, she is a sweet person anyway.
I was just newly diagnosed yesterday and I'm totally depressed, freaked out and overwhelmed about what I should eat. Feeling paranoid to put anything in my mouth since yesterday. Had just a handful of nuts since then and that's it. I'm clueless.

There is no quick cure like this other commenter. There is a group on Facebook called type 2 diabetics lchf in the picture and description (it means low carb high fat). There is a ton of info on what to do to get control of your diabetes to where you can stop meds and manage with diet alone. There are groups similar in name so make sure you join the one that is lchf! The other support things that can raise your bs numbers. There are two sister groups one is for support and one for recipes. There is a while chart for compatible foods you can buy that won't mess with your bs. Good luck.

I wanna thank you for teaching us how to do our blood check , is 132 a bad reading ..?
Simple process, even for the “tech challenged”
I don't mean to sound ignorant or anything, but you guys measure your blood glucose levels in number.number? I'm used to "100" popping up on my screen when my blood glucose is 100. Is there a certain setting on the meter to do that or something?
Where do you put the blood? Top of the strip? Front of the strip? First time user. I've used eight strips, but only gotten two successful readings.
