Hanging your hand down for a few minutes is a good idea. Thank you for the tip. I did not know that for a long time. I would squeeze my finger repeated and get only a minuscule drop which would not register on the meter. What a waste of a strip! Then somebody told me to try dangling my hand by my side first. It worked!

I manage a support group of 5600 diabetes patients and I must point out that reports from my cohort and my conversation with a Walmart pharmacist had demonstrated that most meters DO NOT come with control solution. The pharmacist indicated the patient must either contact the pharmacy or the manufacturer of their specific meter to order it and it can take several days to receive.

  • @SugarMDs

That is true Jo, most meters are going to have some variability 10-15 percent error is acceptable but having a control solution is very important to make sure meter or strips are not totally off.

Well of course, as the blood glucose passes through different parts of the body, they get used up by the cells differently (muscles, subcutaneous tissue, adipose tissue etc) for energy. This is possible because the insulin produced by the beta cells of the pancreas is what helps glucose be uptaken by the cells for use as energy source. So the blood sample that you get from the right index fingertip may contain a different glucose level depending on where it it had gone through the circulation than the blood sample from, say, the left index fingertip, even when measured at the same time. Same is true if it's right index and right thumb fingertip compared and so on. Insulin normally maintains blood glucose level more or less within a close range, so it swings up and down within a stable range. Also, there might be discrepancies in the glucose test strips, as well as in analysis of the blood sample by the glucose monitoring device (glucometer).

Hello, can you advise me please? My wife is 56 years old. Her blood pressure is generally very good 120/80. However occasionally her bp rises in the evening 160/82. Would you classify her as a bp patient? Should she take medication for bp? She is a healthy, eating well and exercising daily. In one of your videos you mentioned the bp should be constantly high to warrant medication. Please help, we are very confused. Thank you and God bless.

Doctor - well and good about "pooling the blood". Doesn't work on me - I clot EXTREMELY quickly - I've been known to clot in a butterfly needle, even doctors and well trained phelbotmist have a hard time getting blood out of me (even using the "Surgeons friend" on the back of my hands). Forget trying to get blood out of a "normal" vein. And for my meter readings - to get a big enough drop, I usually have to squeeze the finger. Do you have any good tips for people like me ? (I think I'm an undiagnosed Factor V Leiden).
