How to test a radiator cap AND not get false results!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here I show how to test a radiator cap without false results. A diagnostic tech has the tools and knowledge to prove their work, not just assume and replace. Falsely “diagnosing” a failed cap as the reason an engine is overheating will NOT fix the source problem and your customer will be back. Consider that each part of the system has its own function.

Love the way you cross check everything to find out exactly WHERE the problem or variable might be instead of just settling for the first and easiest apparent answer. I do this compulsively. Only problem is I don't have a fundamental knowledge of the subject in the 1st place.

Great video. I have a problem with either my cap or the actual neck on the coolant reservoir. This has caused me to own 3 caps and the coolant reservoir is $100+ so I rigged up a emergency release catch receptical so coolant doesn’t go all over my engine compartment and I don’t have to keep purchasing coolant until I figure this out. I have more pressing issues with the truck, as I need to replace the entire a/c system because I’m in southeast Texas and I can fry an egg on my dashboard if I get hungry, not to mention the price of gas is causing me to question all of the liars in government and murdering my wallet.

You really don't have to "go look it up" as the inner scale is in atmospheres (14.7 psi depending on altitude) and right there shows you 1.1 which was printed on the cap. Good idea with the bucket although I use a little vaseline on the radiator cap neck. Take care. Doug

Nice video. But, I wish Shane had covered the symptoms, that could cause someone to suspect, and then test, bad coolant cap. I suppose one obvious symptom is coolant steaming from the reservoir cap (or from the radiator cap). But what about lower coolant levels over time like over a week or a month, , along with no sign of a drips, or leaks, from anywhere else in the coolant system (ex: hoses, radiator, heater core, etc.), and, there appears to be no large amounts of coolant being burned out the exhaust pipes. Maybe there are other symptoms that would lead to this test?

Here's free tip (consider supporting please) If your system requires 20 then you need 20. Currently your system is being protected up to 16 psi and depending on use you may not see overheating BUT the cap could being failing and get worse at a time you don't want (like sticking you on the side of the road). Never trust the cap installed as the last person could have installed the wrong psi. Check the manual. Glad it helped! You rock for commenting! We will let Shane know! That's a good question for Shane directly. Have you considered joining the channel to get him daily as a member benefit? You reached the social media team here. We get 300-400 requests a week, so it’s a bit time challenging as you can imagine. Shane does try to answer some non-members' questions when he gets some time so hang tight if you’re not in a hurry. Did you know one of the member benefits is to ask for which videos would work for your needs and get daily "quicks answers" to questions directly from Shane?. I have a different problem. I'm testing a 44mm Toyota radiator cap. I have a bad cap and multiple new caps. When I test any of these caps, if I cover the vent hole on the adapter, they hold pressure. If I uncover the vent hole, none of them holds pressure. Essentially not a test at all. I'm guessing the Stant 12021 adapter is too tall between the cap lid seal and the opening that simulates the radiator neck. I think I found the problem. The adapter I have was not advertised correctly. It is a different 44mm adapter that applies to this cap part number.

We just received and will be doing full product reviews for the Mityvac brand of cooling system testers for auto, truck and powersports. One big reason for our desire to switch brands was the excellent customer reviews and customer service we received from them but not "other brands". Please stay tuned and look for our new videos. I would suggest you attempt to reach out to Stant and see if they know of a solution. We would gladly test your cap with our new equipment free of charge for our video. Feel free to reach out to us @ 712-281-8374.

@@How2Wrench Thanks. I received my order for the second Stant adapter and was able to test the cap. I have the OEM Tools radiator cap tester and Stant adapters fit it perfectly. My old cap tests at 0 psi. *(I think that explains a lot!)* The new caps I have on hand test at 13-16 psi and the cap is rated at 15.7 psi.

I have a 2004 mazda 3 that sporadically overheats. No coolant in the oil. New thermostat. I just did a coolant flush. Heater core is not plugged. No air in the system. It runs fine. Then just out of the blue, the temp goes all the way up. So I pull off the road and, as slow as I can with great caution, release the cap on the coolant reservoir. Coolant rushes back into the bottle. Along with a fair amount on the ground. I know. Unsafe for me. But when I need to get somewhere, I have to do what it takes. I'm leaning towards water pump of faulty thermostat. Right now, I'm sitting in my car with it idling in my driveway. Its been running for the last 15 or so minutes at operating temp but has yet to overheat. Its very sporadic. Some days its fine. Some days its not. But what I have noticed on occasion, is even after it sits not running for a few hours(5 or 6 hours), it will still have a large amount of pressure built up. Enough to blow the cap out of my fingers when loosening it if I'm not careful. Very frustrated with it. Any ideas what to check would be helpful.
