I would have never guessed a radiator cap can go bad. My heat would not get very hot and the car would blow cool air when the heat is on. So I got a new radiator cap and everything is back to normal. Thanks so much.

While driving, I noticed my temp gauge go much higher than normal, close to red zone. I turned my heater on and gauge went back to normal. I pulled over, opened hood, and noticed reservoir was full with boiling water. I assumed it was the thermostat, so I replaced it, but it happened again. I let the car cool down and opened up radiator. The rubber or plastic on the radiator cap had deteriorated into a coarse black dust. Cleaned off all that black dust, replaced cap, and no more problems. All that time and work replacing thermostat when it was a bad cap. That's what I get for assuming and not troubleshooting. I should have squeezed the hose going from engine to radiator to eliminate the thermostat.

The radiator cap is underrated and often forgotten. I change mine at 60K mile intervals with an OEM one. It costs a few dollars more but if you divide the time into the price, it is a fantastic bargain.

My seal is over the edge on my rad cap. I have noticed that my reservoir bubbles like coolant is being forced into it. It is not overflowing but has bubbles. It also appears that a little coolant is coming from the cap itself. It is a 2015 Jeep wrangler. Cap is definitely needing to be replaced.

Very informative video on the workings of a radiator cap. Thank you sir. Just a point of note, lot of radiator caps do not function like the factory originals as most sellers out there sell some cheap China made caps and they are not rated accordingly. I'm finding it hard to get the originals these days.

Is a radiator cap responsible for losing the amount of coolant from the radiator? My coolant has been loosing in big amount even if I drive even for a short distance but there is no leakage in radiator neither in water pump.

It could also be the radiator is leaking inside the radiator. You may be getting coolant mixing with your transmission fluid. If you have a radiator with a built in transmission cooler. Also a possible blown head gasket. In that case you will see coolant and possible oil coming out the tail pipe.

And still the temperature still going high and I run my OBD reader 2 and it finds a P0115 which is Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit . I bought a new Temperature Sensor but still its leaking fluids in the Reservior tje temperature gauge go higher . A good advice would be beneficial for me .

Well Explained - The other day I drove my car for more than a week, when stop at shopping centre RED Temperature light appeared on my Dashboard I checked the Reservoir completely empty also the radiator took about a litre & half of water. I did not drive again until yesterday and Red light appeared Radiator took over 2 litres of water. Got the Road Side Assistant out he said he does not think its the head casket as the car starts with no problem, he could not see any leaks under neath the motor / on the ground. How do I put the Coolant in the Radiator, if there is still some water inside and do I have to mix the coolant. I have a 4 litre of Distilled water. Please help no $$$ I'm a 74 year old Pensioner. John

When the engine is still cold, remove the radiator cap and start the engine. Look into the radiator. If you see water bubbles coming, it means you have a head gasket problem. Also make sure there is good coolant circulation. Make sure the thermostat and radiator cap are also in good shape. Good luck!
