How to Test a Fuel Shut-off Solenoid

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Step by Step!
In today's video, I'll be showing you how to test a riding lawn mower fuel shut off solenoid.
This test is super simple, and you'll only need a couple of things!
1. A minimum of 9 volts of power (I'm using a 9v battery).
2. A couple wires (I'm using the back up battery plug from an old alarm clock).
Simply supply the 9v minimum to the negative and positive connectors, and the solenoid should move.
If it just has 1 connector, then supply your positive to that connector, and put your ground wire to the base of the solenoid, thus completing the circuit.
Follow these steps, and you should be able to test your fuel shut-off solenoid in a couple minutes!

Fixed my problem, mower cranked fine… but won’t start…but would briefly start/run if starting fluid was sprayed into air intake…so obvious fuel issue. Removed and worked solenoid plugger with pliers until free, reinstalled, mower started and ran fine… problem fixed. Note this mower sat unused for 2 years… gas turned to varnish and froze the plugger…drained carb bowel and tank, easy clean and fix. Thanks Frank

After putting carb back in my Kohler 730S 25hp engine, it starts now but have to play with choke to keep it running. Either sounds like a jet or struggles to run. Just learning this and cleaned solenoid but didn' t know how to test it and don' t remember it moving? Am I dealing with a fuel solenoid issue and need to take it back off or coukd this be a choke cable sticking, it feels "sticky" when I move it up and down, but not frozen as a does move lever it' s connected to. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Trying to keep it out of landfill/recycling! Built in 02 but very lightly used, I'm second ower and replaced carb in 2017 with expensive Kohler carb, $200+.

If the solenoid fails or jams, can it also jam in the closed, ar retracted, position ? I drive a 1996 Malaysian Proton Saga, with the Mitsubishi 1,296 cc 4G13 engine, using an Aisan variable venturi type carburetor. I believe I can see a fuel cut-off, or antidieseling, solenoid at the rear of the carburetor. Often, on stopping and turning off the ignition key, the engine runs on, or diesels. So I thought maybe the solenoid had malfunctioned, jamming in the open position, and failing to close the fuel when the ignition key had turned off.

Supplying 12v to the solenoid will engage the magnet and pull it down. Taking away the 12v will disengage the magnet and the spring should push the plunger back to stop the fuel from going into the main jet. If you put 12v to the solenoid, but it doesn't move, you need to replace it!

I am having issues with a Troy-Bilt Pony with Briggs&Stratton engine(17.5HP). The issue is that after like 15-20 mins the engine will shut off automatically and it will not start again until engine cools down. I thought it had to do with the parts in the deck and I went ahead and changed everything including: all belts, deck spindles, blades and pulleys. I found a metal piece that holds the pulley of the PTO worn out a lil bit and the pulley looked unbalanced if I compare with the other one. Imagine you pinched a fuel line, your engine would slowly run out of fuel, and start running rough before it died out. Where as if you had a spark issue, let's say a safety switch like a seat switch that grounded the coil, the engine would shut off immediately. This will help you determine what kind of issue you have. Start by running it with the fuel cap loose, if the issue goes away, replace the fuel cap. Sometimes the vents clog and it creates vapor lock in the fuel tank

Wayne Stefinashen the fuel solenoid is really an anti backfire solenoid and was made for that....it wasn't made to stop leaks...if you put a shut off valve in fuel line it won't do the same as the solenoid....the solenoid immediately blocks the main jet so no fuel will get to the engine...even if you turned off engine and turned off shut off valve immediately you still have a carburetor bowl full of fuel which can still cause engine to backfire....

Macknumber9 you are absolutely correct but sometimes a carburetor rebuild kit is not available, nor is a replacement fuel solenoid so easy peasy cut off the solenoid stem and install a fuel shutoff valve but notify your customer to throttle down before shutting off the engine and NEVER forget to shut of the fuel valve.

The stuck shut off valve doesn't allow the fuel into the carb bowl.Isn't the point to get the mower running.I did the same thing and my mower has been working for at least 2 years without that expensive POS. Just shut it off slowly so it doesn't backfire. It won't hurt it even if it does. I actually cut the tip off the shut off solenoid. It still works fine. • @EliminatorPerformance

When there's a leaking needle valve, the bowl floods and fuel goes up the main jet into the intake and can sometimes flood a crankcase if the carb is higher than the intake port. With a fuel solenoid, it closes the main jet, which will prevent the engine from flooding. The carb bowl will still flood though, and would run rich as soon as you start it

@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 You can disagree if you want, but maybe I should have clarified I'm talking about when the engine is off. Let's say you let a mower sit, and the needle valve leaks, the bowl is overfilling with fuel, the fuel has no where else to go other than up the main jet, then down the intake and into the cylinder. That's how many mowers end up with fuel in the crankcase. The fuel shut off solenoid is in the closed position and blocks the main jet. Therefore, fuel cannot travel up the main jet and flood the cylinder and then the crankcase.
