How to test a dead ceiling fan capacitor

Many electric motors such as this bathroom ceiling fan have run capacitors. After verifying that the fan turn easily, you should suspect a dead capacitor. If the fan is not seized, if you have power going to your unit, then the capacitor is likely dead. You can measure the capacitance with a capacitor meter and be certain that the capacitor has to be replace.

Don't think it is a good idea to test any electronic components while it s still connected to the appliance / circuit. You may get false readings coming from other components. I think it should be disconnected first in a way so that it could be tested in isolation to the rest of components.

un solder one of the wire at the cap and retest. so you don't get a reading from within the motor windings.

any readings from within the motor should be too small to pick up with the multimeter and/or only like 0.1uf difference between connected/disconnected to the motor. though I can see how this can be confusing.

I believe that unsoldering on end of a component is necessary when testing it's resistance/ohmmage

It's ridiculous how things are cheap. Then you want to replace that cheap part which costs like $30 with shipping. You end up buying a new fan. SCAM.

Yes... the correct way to do it is to isolate the capacitor before testing.

Depending on the motor, it may not start, or may run slowly or very inefficiently, and possibly burn out the motor from stress. These motors were engineered to run whatever they're doing with the capacitor they came with.
