how to test 3 phase motor with multimeter

Let's learn how to test 3 phase motor with a multimeter
were are testing the following
1) Continuity
disconnect the motor from power and ensure that all the leads are not connecting to each other in the terminal box, test the continuity between each coil contact (U1 U2, V1 V2 and W1 W2) and make sure that there is continuity. if there is no continuity then probably your motor is burnt.
2) Short circuit test
We test short circuit between coils for Example testing between U1 and V1 and so on. There must know continuity between coils if all the 6 leads are out. ( the only exception is when the motor has been connected internally either in star or delta).
3) Resistance
While testing continuity ensures that you record the reading, the reading is determined by the resistance of the coil. The reading between each coil should be the same or the difference should minor.

Great job! But please note those test are basic without a megger. Insulation resistance test or integrity are very critical, hence, can only be achieved by visual inspection and using a megger 🙏🏽….

Good clear video. Worth noting that you are only testing with the small voltage from the meter. When checking for faults to earth ideally use a Megger which generates a higher voltage and will expose faults not shown on a multimeter.

Yea when I went to work at a power plant a long time ago , there was a pump motor that was given problem. That was the time I watched the plant manager a old navy electrician use a megger to test . He found the fault and sent the motor out to be fixed . I bought one of those on e bay for my uses

The motor should be completely disconnect from supply. Remember when carrying out insulation resistance the Mega ohm meter has 500DC volt that it apply to the winding.

Remember that any time a multimeter is used for continuity testing the device being tested must be deenergized. To test a motor for continuity, first isolate, or disconnect, it from the circuit. Then use the multimeter to check the resistance between phases....thank you
