Hey guys, so I’d just like to say sorry my voice sounds a little weird in this video. Essentially the reason why is I have been struggling with Tinnitus for the past 6 months. For those of you who dont know it is best described as a constant ringing that is in the victim’s ear that never goes away. Whenever you’ve been to a loud nightclub or a music festival you will probably experience a ringing in your ears that goes away within a few hours. What I have is that except the ringing is much louder and it never quiets down. It is constant. It may sound like it’s not that bad but really it is unbearable sometimes. I hear it all day every day and it is at the point now where it is making me depressed and is severely limiting my productivity. Nights are the worst. You never truly appreciate something until it is gone and something as simple as silence is something everyone takes for granted. The ability to go to bed or somewhere quiet and hear nothing is something that I have not had for half a year. The silence is deafening. Right now I’m taking a course of drugs that are supposed to reduce the fluids in my ear as the doctor thinks that is the cause, the ringing is ever so slightly less noisy but still unbearable at times such as right now when I’m writing this. For those of you who dont know the ears, mouth and nose are all linked together so me taking these drugs to reduce fluids in my ears is also causing the way my nose works to shift so when I speak I sound slightly different. Not going to lie it feels pretty shit and I am 90% certain I will have this ringing and warbling in my ears for the rest of my life. But anyway don't forget to like and subscribe XD

I can imagine how terrible it is, and since imagining is usually not as bad as the real thing, I can only expect what you're going through to be a 5x as worse as what I imagine XD I'll pray that you'll find some sort of treatment that will help lessen your condition significantly, and make it a bit more tolerable to live with. Hannibal is like all the three inmates in one body, he’s creepy but civilized, he has no real empathy and feels no guilt, but he also has an animal side to him since he eats people, now that I think about it these traits go hand in hand throughout the movie. At first he’s cunning but terrifying like the man in the first cell, then you see his lack of empathy when told about the killer, and then you see the terrifying animal part of him when he escapes. It’s like he has these traits are balled up inside of him waiting to come out for the kill.

I would argue that Hannibal has tons of empathy. He knows exactly what people around him are feeling and he uses that knowledge to manipulate them. What he doesn't have is compassion. He knows what you're feeling but doesn't care about you other than how you might be useful to him.

Anthony Hopkin's girlfriend saw the movie when it came out and she was so terrified of his face she dumped him almost overnight... Plus, when the movie had its premier Hopkins would creep up to people's seats and say in a sudden, calm voice "how are you liking the film?" and scare everyone senseless. This guy is fricken awesome. great vid btw

Anthony Hopkins said the director asked how he'd like to be seen, i.e drawing, laying on the bed etc. Hopkins said he'd like stand there anticipating her arrival, because Lecter can smell her. He plays down how good an actor he is. (He also envisioned him as a cold machine or computer) Also, I think him being behind glass is more powerful than metal bars, you can't really see there's glass there, gives more the illusion he could harm her.

For me, he's terrifying for two main reasons; 1. He has no motivation, he kills because he is simply able to do so. 2. He is looked in that place just because he wants to. We clearly see he has massive manipulation skills, how come he didn't leave yet.

Actually, depending on the novel you read, Hannibal _does_ have a motivation. TW: trauma and graphic depictions of violence Second TW ⚠️ In Hannibal Rising, Hannibal and his sister Mischa were captured as children in Lithuania and taken by a group led by a war criminal. Hannibal witnesses his sister being murdered and cannibalized, and eventually discovers that he ate a part of her as well. This helps set up the pathology of why Hannibal eats people and his attempt to turn these things into some expression of ‘art’; to put things back into the world ‘better’ than he found them or to correct the blot that people like his captors put on it. He actually spends his time hunting the individual members down in the early pages of the book and learns combat from a woman named Murasaki.

Something that adds to the affect is when Clarice first meets Hannibal, his eyes are in the shadows. The rest of him is bright and normal but you can’t see the eyes. It’s a “I might look normal but I have a terrible secret” feel.

Yea there was the sense that "something's not right". Everything points to him being a psychopath yet in that moment, it challenges the audience to compare what they've been told with reality, but now that doesn't tell you everything either. Even seeing Hannibal Lecture, up and down, it's in the eyes. Eyes are so compelling.

You call him a terrifying villain. I call him my next door neighbor. He is a very nice man. I just don't eat anything he cooks.

Hannibal seems like such as gentleman. That is one of the things that makes him so scary.

The emphasis on "closer" even as a child I knew what he was trying to do and it absolutely thrilled me. Hopkins makes you feel like he's crawling under your skin with one word.

He actually terrified the actress (Jodie Foster) so much that in interviews Jodie says she never spoke to him off-set ! ! !

To my opinion there is a category " the most expressive eyes" in which belong the following actors : Anthony Hopking, Jack Nicholson, Mel Gibson, Ray Liotta, Robert Downey Jr, Omar Shariff, Al Pacino... From all the above the most diverse and charismatic is mister Hopking. He can be a benevolent professor, a priest, a serial killer, a prisoner...

It's all on the eyes. Always in the eyes. Sir Anthony's acting with his eyes is what tells the audience that this guy is THAT ONE. 😳 Superb. 👌🏽✨️

4:00 it's called tasking. You ask someone to do something and if they do, then you have established a power hierarchy. Could be as simple as asking for a light (common when people smoked), a glass of water, even asking the time. It can be refused, eg by handing the other party the matches (No, light your own.) But Clarice didn't refuse and so gave power to Lecter. She could have approached the cell right away, shown the ID and withdrawn. She might even have asked 'Mind if I sit?' knowing he had no choice but to accede. That way she would have retained the balance of power. (He's basically a caged animal, she has all the aces ) Lecter, of course, would have understood what she was doing and could have upped the ante. However by playing this hand as she did, Clarice handed power to Lecter, which he was too much of a gentleman to exploit. She called out his protective instinct, in other words and throughout their relationship, Clarice maintains power over Lecter in repeated, similar power plays. He realises early on that he's met his match, which is why he never harms her, indeed becomes her protector.

@@thelatterdayarbiter This is a natural body response to a fight or flight surprise. Most people are cowardly and would run/be terrified and too afraid to act, so atleast you know your not a coward like most people.

You neglected to mention what is to me THE most terrifying aspect of that first shot of Hannibal standing in the middle of his cell: the camera is showing Clarice's first-person perspective and as Hannibal comes into view he's already staring _right into it._ But he obviously doesn't just spend all day standing still in the middle of his cell. He knew she was coming. He was _waiting for her._

Thing about Lecter is he is creepy as hell yet charming all the same. He’s the villain but you cheer for him and want him to win you know you’ve done something right when you make a character like this, it’s an excellent psychotic victory

That’s because we subconsciously compare him to Crawford. Lector respects Clarice and acts more like a mentor to her. He’s demented yes. But he’s brilliant and he’s straight with her. He quid pro quos with her but gives her a choice about it. He’s up front. Meanwhile Crawford is using her left and right however and whenever it suits him best in the moment. He does that thing at the funeral home where he aligns himself with the small town police and makes her the outcast little lady that it’s not decent to talk in front of. The ends justify the means with Crawford. By contrast, Lector invests in her and it’s even more evident in the book that he sees her potential and works with her to deepen her understanding of abnormal psychology. Goes much further in the book with that dynamic. He actually helps her to move toward her goal. When Hannibal finds out about the “deal” for his help being a lie, I remember feeling sorry for him! That’s one hell of a trick to pull off as an author and whoever wrote the adaptation nailed it too. Yeah I’m still trying to look under the hood of this story to figure out how Lector was made to be such a sympathetic villain- even after he has killed people on screen. Some of it probably has to do with the excellent casting of Anthony Hopkins - but not all of it.

What I loved about their interaction is while she does not have to fear him physically attacking her that like a room full of radioactivity the longer she stays the more at risk she is. It can be summed up with one line in the film. "Believe me, you don't want Hannibal Lecter inside your head." This is a man who knows how to worm his way into a persons head and find all their soft spots. Then knowing them he could easily use them to harm people for his pleasure. He does this with Clarice with having her recount her worst memories but the real danger is that the longer he is around you the more susceptible to his will. This can be shown by Miggs. Lecter was able to convince him to swallow his own tongue just by talking to him. Once Lecter knows you he can use what he knows to break you down completely.

That line of dialog might be the most important sentence in the film. It establishes the tension we feel for every second that Clarice spends in Lecter's presence, the fear that we have every time she's forced to give him a piece of her past as quid pro quo.

The detail I liked about this scene is how Chilton warned her not to approach the glass, yet Lecter immediately tests her by requesting to see the badge up close. She complies, but not out of subservience. She is playing by her own rules, not Chilton’s. Hannibal respects this, as she treats him like a person and not some demonic entity.

Another way to look at things is the way the shots on hannibal's face kind of invade our personal space making us uncomfortable. And even more uncomfortable, his face looks calm... too calm.

What makes Lector so terryfing to me is the fact that he is very intelligent. There is nothing more dangerous than an insane person with a high level of intelligence since you can't predict what he is going to do and in the worst case, he might totally read you

Had the same thought. It's hard to shake the thought that he knows more than you do. In combination with a sociopathic lack of empathy, one fears not only that he'll figure out how to do what he wants but that he'll have no reservations about doing it, whatever it is...

Something that the video doesn't mention is that while yes, when you first see hannibal lecter standing there in his cell, he's not showing any signs of insanity, to me he is terrifying anyway because he seems so... artificial. Yes he's not showing any signs of insanity but he's not normal because a normal person would just looking bored, lying on the bed, maybe reading...? However, he's just standing in the middle of his cell, unmoving, with a perfect posture. Its almost like he's TRYING to appear normal but just comes off creepy because its not actually normal in the slightest. However, he's a psychologist so it has to be intentional. The best way I can describe it is that it is like he knew she was coming and decided to do the creepiest thing he could think of, which was in fact, nothing, like an absence of any sort of traits so she couldn't read him. And that is terrifying because you have NO idea what to expect.

To me it looked too predictable. He heard her coming and therefore took that position to assert dominance. The reason he 'appears' terrifying is the incompetence of the FBI Agent who should be trained in interrogations and the fact that while she clearly was incompetent had no one with knowledge with her

Totally agree with this analysis. It's like he's attempting to look and act like a "normal agreeable" person which comes off really forced and artificial. Everything he is showing is just what he wants you to see, everything in his cell is in his control and the way he wants it to look to give the impression he is intelligent and artistic, which demands respect, controls potential conversation topics and ultimately disguises and distracts from who he really is, an insane murderer who eats people.

The reason why your viewer retention rate is so high is because you’re smart and concise and explain topics that us as the audience actually care about. We get educated in a 10-20 minute video very successfully. Thank you.

When I first seen him behind the bars I thought I was the one behind the bars and I felt like I was at his mercy. The hunger was oozing out of him it was palpable I was terrified as a teen. Hopkins didn't have much screen time but I was impressed immensely

Don't worry 'bout a thing Horror - an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust. Terror - extreme fear. There is nothing different really. I guess terror is just to terrify...and horror has other emotions rather than just to terrify.

One other thing is that in that scene often times it is shot in a way that makes it appear as if there is no glass between them and he is just standing right in front of her.

Hannibal Lecter by Anthony Hopkins is one of the best characters in a movie of all time.

I'm not a horror fan, but this suspense movie had a profound effect that left me astonished as I left the cinema. I was disturbed and confused why I felt admiration for Lector. I have no desire to harm others, let-alone taste their flesh, but I concluded, it was his towering intellect, education, and sophistication. All an exterior mask, hiding a cold, calculating, coiled power underneath, with a keen focus holding it back until just the right moment, and then unleashing the demon within. It made him both terrifying and disarming. An amazing portrayal by Anthony Hopkins.

The most terrifying thing about this is the loss of the iconic line "Hello, Clarice" from the scene.

"Lecter is our most prized asset" is actually the best line to describe him because it is the most dehumanizing line. It gives no indication that he is a person. Instead of saying "he" the doctor says "Lecter". Then, instead of saying "prisoner" he says "asset". These two words dont necessarily make what he is talkibg about a person which is why its the best.

It's also a great and subtle way to show how Chilton is just the worst AND it exposes the ableism he has. Even though Hannibal IS scary as hell and awful, he's still a human being and Chilton speaks of him as if his mental illness makes him an object.

Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins never interacted between scenes. She only really saw him when he was locked in his cell on set. Made these interactions super real. Incredible performances from both actors.

This scene in particular was just an absolute powerhouse of casting, directing, cinematography, acting... Just a beautiful representation of why I love seeing scenes broken down like this. Great job on explaining everything.

I love how she initially just stuck her arm out to bring her ID closer. She DID NOT want to take that step!

The intimacy of the eye contact is unnerving. The ultra-closeups, and how both actors portray it. Jodie foster doesn't get enough credit for her acting in this scene. It's terrifying, you can feel it, but because she's standing across from Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal Lechter, it's overshadowed. More sublimation here, he steals the scene, but as you pointed out "Closer..." is asserting dominance, it also tightens the vignette. Focusing on the eye contact, the intimacy, and claustrophobia of the situation. Ironically, she's trapped, while he's standing calmly in his cell. He's comfortable, well lit, with decorated walls, while all she's got is a folding chair in a dim cramped corridor...

She was praised for her acting in this movie, everything thinks it's about Hannibal but he only has less than 15 min of screen time. When he's on he steals the show but she is great enough where your not just waiting for Hopkins to get back.

Yep. What got me is that he was saying 'closer, closer' allegedly so that he could read her ID, but all the time she was stepping forward he was looking at her eyes, not the ID. And then he casually flicks his eyes down to the ID, reads it super-fast, back to her with, "Yeah, you're not worthy."

i definitely agree that using helpless protagonists makes it very terrifying, but in some ways I find the opposite to be true: what's more horrifying than seeing someone do everything right, everything you thought would work and keep them safe, only for it to fail in the end. they're helpless in that sense, and you'll feel the same way too. 👀👀

Sepia Smith This actually happens to the Memphis police in Silence of the Lambs, you'll notice, when Lector escapes. They make no stupid mistakes as is common in these films but they still fail.

Their relationship is so intriguing. He doesn’t just give her information. He knows she can grow to become a better investigator and challenges her to do exactly that. Without him, she probably wouldn’t have gotten to where she wanted to be. When he brings up something from Clarice’s past, it’s for a reason. He doesn’t just do it to open old wounds. It’s give and take. He may be evil, but he’s not crude. You don’t find many villains with that much complexity these days.

Well Clarice actually falls in love with Dr. Lecter and he was in love with her on sight. The movie adaptations refused to stay true to the books wherein after Clarice saves Hannibal from Mason Verger and he saves her from the pigs she offers herself to him and they go and live in Cuba for the remaining years of their lives. So be like the Joker got into Dr. Harley Quinn's mind and heart, Hanny got into Clarice head and heart.

Right now I’m trying to write a character for a short story that is a doppelgänger of a kids mother. So now I’m here doing a character analysis of Hannibal. You conveyed a lot of ideas very clearly about how he is so terrifying from the get go. Right from the fact that he is so civilized is the most terrifying thing as it conveys the idea that he might be sane yet he is quite the opposite, compare him to the not so civilized one, he might as well be an average citizen from a first meeting. The more he goes on tho, the more you pick up on his little tactics of him being a master manipulator which is even more terrifying than the not so civilized psycho. Add that to everything he is capable of and that is what truly makes him the most terrifying person in that room.

I went to see it in the cinema when it came out, and I still remember what it felt like when she was walking along past the cells and thinking - what the hell is going to be in the cell at the end, but then there's just this guy standing there. It was more terrifying than if he'd been acting crazy.

Jodie's acting in the intro shot is also great, after seeing the three previous inmates degenerating behavior she starts craning her neck to try and see Hannibal, as if she can't wait to see how much worse he is. Both her character and the audience get thrown slightly off balance to find him already looking at us before he could have seen around the corner. It's excellent, excellent acting, combined with excellent cinematography.

Can we just take a second to enjoy the brilliance of Hopkins in his prime? The subtle expressions, even the breaking of eye contact with a blink then he looks at the floor and back to Clarice. Dude won an Oscar with only 24 minutes of screen time

Oh, I feel the scariest thing of _ALL_ is that "impenetrable" plastic you talk about. For me, after the straight-up _medieval_ iron bars containing the other hopelessly insane criminals, there seems to be _nothing at all_ between Hannibal and Clarice (i.e. _us-the audience.)_ There isn't a lot of light reflecting on the material-I wouldn't be surprised if there was nothing at all really there while filming it.

Personally, I don't find Hannibal "terrifying" at all, because he's caged. But it is like looking at a caged predator - you know it's harmless in a cage, but could tear you apart, were it to get out. Same is here - Hannibal looks at protagonist like a predator looks at it's prey. I don't agree with the video - he doesn't look normal. He looks like he's trying to look "civil", normal, but you can clearly see he's deranged. But basically all of this is a credit to the actor.

@@Gyvulys it's funny, I watched the silence of the lambs and thought "he's not believable at all, who would buy him as a normal person?" And then I watched Red Dragon and realised he was different before he got caught. Believable, as a kindly old man. so I'd say he kinda relaxed after being caught, allowing himself to be a bit wild because it kept people afraid of him. However irl, historically, serial killers don't really change their behaviour in prison. even if they admit to their crimes their ego won't allow them to take down the facade, ever. They just carry on with the charismatic act (Ted Bundy is a good example) unless they lose their mind like Manson

When I start watching a video and like it, I _always_ watch to the end.

This was a fascinating explanation. I didn't realize how much storytelling you could do just with the camera alone. I don't do film making but I am going to school for art, so it draws similar parallels. It is interesting to see how different components illicit a conscious or sub conscious reaction from the viewer.

Clarice's muscle twitching on neck and peripheral areas of her face show she's extremely nervous... before she even meets Hannibal. The emotional communication Hopkins and Foster convey is magnificent.

Very good explained. I rewatched Silence of the lambs 2 weeks ago and my tv glitched for a while in the moment when detective is on phone with Hannibal and I didn't heard the last part of their conversation. Then the tv went back on... I was really pissed of because I watched all movie and I was looking foward to this last conversation. And today KZread recommended me this video and you showed the exact moment in the conversation which I accidentaly didn't saw in tv :D :D What a coincidence, thank you :D

Apart from the clues you mention, there is also the visible apprehension and uneasiness of Clarice. We are terrified of Lecter because we can see that the protagonist is terrified of him.

​@@bodebaggins look dude, there a lot of crappy old horror movies. most movies in the genre in general are not good. besides there are modern movies i can point to as well as being really good as an example of current horror movies being high quality compared to other eras. it's so easy to build a strawman saying a past era was better than the current era when you compare the best of the past to the worst of the present. let the right one in, hereditary, lake mungo, the lighthouse, under the skin, the clovehitch killer, all really good modern horror movies that don't rely on jumpscares. if you can't find any modern horror movies that are good then you're not looking hard enough.

great video mate. this is one of my favorite films and you showed me things i’d had never even thought of before.

My dad was a forensic anthropologist for the RCMP. Watching cop movies with him was quite annoying because he would always point out how utterly wrong they were on so many things. Not so with silence of the lambs. My dad had nothing but high praise for this movie, especially the autopsy scene with the woman who was found floating.

I always loved movies, and you are one of the only youtube channels i really appreciate talking and teaching about movies.

Something else that makes Lecter so terrifying is that he is unusually restrained and refined for what he is rumored to be, throwing the audience off guard; yet his monstrosity isn't fully hidden(or Clarice might've slacked soon after)- you can somehow feel the ominpresent terror that has yet to erupt out of him, gripping you in perpetual fear as his mysterious demeanor continues to reveal itself. Also he is very unpredictable in the way he treats others- one moment cordial and even jovial, then suddenly becomes hostile and menacing. That further bolsters his power over others as they are kept off-kilter in his presence.

You wanna scare the audience? Cast anthony hoppkins and tell him to be a villain . Thats all there ia to it

Do we need more reasons to name Anthony Hopkins the best actor ever? He absolutely killed it in all of his roles. Silence of the Lambs, Westworld, The Father, Fracture, The Two Popes... The man is incredible
