also pulled switch out drenched in contact cleaner. Manually activated switch on / off repeatedly. reinstalled and all fixed.

Thank you sir!! I had already replaced the relay with a used relay and was having the same problem. Found this video, checked and discovered that the wire had come out of the connector on the female side. Pushed the wire back in and jumped the limiter switch and bingo.Put it all back together works perfectly. The wire that had come out was the problem the whole time.Thanks again! If you are ever in Birmingham let me know I owe you lunch...

Having purchased a new PDP which didn't cure the problem I found this video and hey presto..!! I wish I had found it before, it would have saved me £550...!!! Many thanks!

After four hours at the marina and testing all sorts of relay circuit and switches, I finally found this video and fix my issue in a matter of minutes. I know it was that damn switch, but didn't know how to fix it. Really appreciate you making this little video. Just wish that sound is three hours earlier. Safe boating!

Did you find out what the problem that caused the issue was and repaired it or do you still have it in the by-pass wiring config?

Great video. I have the same engine with the same problem and that go around solved it. Do a video on replacing the sensor switch next!

Thanks man for the fix. I found that on mine I didn’t have to disconnect the plug but instead there is a plastic adjustment bolt that sits on the steering shaft. You pointed at the bolt with your screw driver. Just hand twist the plastic bolt and you will hear a clicking sound. It only twist about 20 degrees but that’s the difference between lifting up and not lifting at all.

2012 115hp. The manual trim release is not working after loosening the screw. Anything else to try? Replaced the relay and checked the switch.and the trim doesn't work.

I've had problems with the trim/tilt on engine since it was brand new. It wouldn't trim at all, so I replaced the tilt/trim motor and it's working. It's always bounced up and down when lowering and makes a horrible screeching noise. I've tightened the trim tube nut, greased everything, checked fluid, and it still does it. No one seems to have a clue why they do this. They just say it's "normal." It shakes so violently going down that I'm afraid it's going to crack the transom. It's maddening that I can't figure out how to fix this.

I hate to say it but that sounds you described and the bouncing when lowering seems to be a common issue. Wish I had a better answer for you but if it's any consolation I've had my E-Tec 250 for over 10 years and my transom is still intact.

@@Hotislandnights Yes, this is really unacceptable for an engine that costs this much money and the techs just say it's normal. It may be normal, but it's certainly not right. I've had issues with the tilt/trim since I bought it new. I've never had this issue with any other outboard. Thank you!

​@@razorsharpbt124 have you removed the whole trim pump assembly? including the upper and lower trim pins?salt water?those pins are dissimilar metals and can bind up.they pivot slightly once they start to corrode no matter how much grease you pump in there the corrosion blocks the grease from getting in there.not sure if yours has fittings or the noise you are describing is relevant. But I have had to a few etecs with notchy up and down be caused by the mounting pins being seized up slightly.

@@denniswilder3014 Hello. This motor has done this since it was brand new and still does. Everything is pristine as far as no corrosion. If I apply upwards pressure on the lower unit while lowering it, it smooths it out. I've been all over the E-TEC forums and all anyone, including the techs, suggest is tightening the pivot tube nut, greasing and bleeding the system, which I've done. I've done everything I can think of and research and nothing helps. I also see that this is a very common problem with these outboards. Thanks!

It could also be a bad tilt/trim switch which in this case you would disconnect the switch on the starboard side until it can be replaced.

I have a 2007 Scout 17’ with a 115 Etec saltwater edition. I took it out for the first time and it really struggled “ bogged down” to get up on plane. It seemed to take forever to get up on top of the water. Any idea why this might be so?

There could be several problems, could be a prop, fuel issue, compression..etc..sorry I wasn't much help..

I purchased a used 2004 75 HP E-tec last year and had that same sort of "bogged down" feeling while trying to get the boat got onto plane. Once at full throttle...the engine seemed fine. After checking things over, I learned that the previous owner did not properly index the spark plugs (2 of the 3 plugs were not facing the injector). The other issue was that the thermostat was missing so the engine was always running at full cooling and not allowing the engine to warm up. Once I addressed those two issues, the engine ran a lot better while getting onto plane. No more hesitations at low RPM's under high load.

Btw is this limit switch only causing the issue for up? As mine intermittently dosnt work for down ?

Yes only for up, your issue might be your trim relay, if it's not trimming down, hold the trim down button at the same time tap on the relay..

I have a 2004 200HP DI, my motor will go down but not up and I am going to try this tomorrow, looks like the wiring is the same as your 2005, my question is this something that can be used long term or just a quick fix to raise it? I would assume covering it up and making sure the wires don't come out with electrical tape is recommended.

Hotislandnights thanks! I removed the switch in the cowling which was recently replaced and I think that it’s causing the issue cause it now works at the helm for going up and down, if the prob crops up again I will try your jumper wire remedy.

My limit switch is broken, is it OK to have it fixed by bypassing as explained, yes I know I will not have a limit of tilt but I can do without.

It might not be the same issue but you could ask the about the trim up limit switch needs replacing

Will this work if both up and down do not work. My outboard is stuck in the water

I don't think it will, you might have to tap on the black square relays

I tried it and it worked for one press of the button... then back to not working again... I just can't get a win on this one!

Etec tilt & trim temp fix

I did the same thing with the jumper wire - I now have power to the "up" button but the engine will not physically tilt up. Any idea what the next step might be? while I wait to take it to the marine mechanics... Thanks

You can try swapping it with the trim up relay

Does the same apply if it only goes up

I don't believe it does, if it won't go down then it might be the relay
