If the chemical structure are the same, how does the uv ray tell the difference? Even Xray diffraction would also show the same peaks. Just curious. If the difference comes from impurities in natural diamonds, how are they different from the clarity or color of the diamonds? Aren’t they also defects? I’m guessing not all natural diamonds have the same impurities as well. Curious as a phd in materials science

No natural resources are created equal depending on where it was developed. For instance, wine grown in different soil, with access to better hydration, sunlight, disturbances in the earth, maturation time period etc. Makes a higher quality wine.. Or whatever quality of wine you seek, you could take control of those factors and get the results that you seek. It's the same for anything that's comes from the earth, fruits vegetables, geological formations (like diamonds) etc.

@@jaydiggz5697 Comparing a single crystal carbon to wine (which is not only organic, but a solution of numerous substances) seems like a stretch. The chemical composition of wine varies depending on who makes it (I agaree). But diamond is a face-centered cubic lattice with a single element. A hadful of defect types (whether from labs or nature) are used to determine the origin of the material. As a person who published several academic journal papers on crystallography, I'd say the wine analogy doesn't really apply here. I'm curious about what kind of physics are used to evaluate the diamonds. Most tests that I'm familiar with have signal-to-noise ratios that are not suitable for these tests. But I guess the person who posted the video is also not a material scientist or a physicist who can answer this.

The difference is in which atmosphere or in othere words enviroment, the diamond is grown. This decides, what the defects consist of. In diamonds grown in the earths crust, the main inclusion is nitrogen, and sometimes a few othere dopends, which decide the colour of the diamond. In lab grown diamonds, a boron atmosphere is used, because it allows for a more perfect Crystal structure. So the only dopends are boron atoms. This is the reason, why a flouresence measurment can identifie those two: the nitrogen doped diamond gives off blue light, while the boron doped is not flouresencent. Besides, there are also natural diamonds, which do not show flouresence, so this machine would give a false positive in this cases.

  • @lixiaochen6

Lab grown diamond is (usually) pure. Natural diamond tends to have impurities that makes them behave slightly differently under UV. Since pure diamonds have better properties for practical uses (like cutting, optical component), that's where the research went into. It's theoretical possible to introduce impurities in the lab grown diamonds to make them pass these tests. I think there have been some colored lab grown diamonds. Overall it's probably just not worth the effort remake the tooling just to forge some natural diamonds. Diamond making machines are extremely expensive. They can make generic, pure diamonds. Pick the good ones to sell as jewelry, and sell the rest as industrial parts. It's not like larger business can laundry lab grown diamonds as natural ones at scale anyway. Whether there are some smaller labs doing it is another story. The only way you will be able to tell might be they are all impure in the same way when you're looking at an entire batch.

Lab grown seems to be glowing in the dark longer - more the reason to buy them lol. This machine is marking it red as though to make the buyer think it's a wrong choice rofl. This diamond industry would collapse if not for all the made up hype around wedding rings. No value for diamonds when you want to resell them. Even the diamond stores don't think it is worth something haha

Seriously, even natural diamonds lose their value faster than cars lol. Anyone thinking they will get even half of what they paid for their diamond, if they ever need to sell it, is in for a rude awakening.

@@Zero8880it's interesting that the resale value seems to be such a big thing for diamonds and is thrown around as reason to not buy lab grown, I mean are you planning to get a divorce when you buy it? The ex would probably keep the ring anyway... I'd have a laugh knowing they got diddly squat for it.

So why u need to tell the diff using this machine when the chemical composition structure and properties are the same only so that MINED diamonds can be sold for far more price and the companies can keep their monopoly. The difference u can tell throught this machinenis of purity and lab grown diamonds are more pure compared yo mined diamonds hence u can tell the difference

Not really, all the machine does is check for certain impurities. You can still have naturals without these impurities and they fetch a high price.

What’s really crazy is the machine indicates the lab diamond as bright red instead of the cubic zirconia.😂😂😂. I’d think the cubic would be the red color, as it’s the least desirable of the bunch. I’m guessing this machine is specifically to rule out lab diamonds as a jeweler should be able to immediately identify a cz with the naked eye.

Wow, this video was absolutely useless. "Hey, just stick it in this machine here, eh" What kind of machine is it? Who makes it? Where can I get one? How much does it cost? How do I get one? What is it's accuracy rating? Can it distinguish a lab diamond from Moissanite? If you're just going to tell us to use that machine, answering questions like those is essential. But actually, I expected some basic tips like examining the stone. Like, I don't know, are all lab diamonds are flawless and could you use that as an indicator?
