thanks in the early 1970s my Dad drove a 67 Mustang Fastback 289 Automatic and he had our garage littered with Ford Rear ends. he bought out of junkyards all from different Ford models that had different gearing in them he would come home from work eat dinner then go into our garage to swap the rear ends in the family car to try and make it a little faster ! he often. ran around with. a stopwatch and was checking times with the family in the car on rare occassions it was just him and I in the car and as a boy i thought it was cool most especially when he laid Rubber on the road !

your points made are so extremely helpful !!! its no wonder you have almost 100,000 views ! :-) remember when such information was only available if you happened to ask the right (old) guy at the local swapmeet when it came to town ??!!! My hat is off to the hotrodders of the 70's and 80's !! (let alone the giants of the 50's and 60's) --- they kept the secret stream of knowledge alive or they had to dig and dig just to find a starting point and they still made 6 seconds... (-:

It doesn't matter whether you use a deep socket or a standard socket. You cannot use any socket on those bottom nuts. You have to use a wrench to get on those nuts because of the shape of the center section casting.

If you can find a diff from the same car you are working on, it will be a simple bolt in application. All the information can be found on the tag. Buy a Ford 9 "differential with a 3.00 WDD-B identification plate that according to this code corresponds to a 1965 Mercury, I want to install this differential in a Jeep Cherokee. Here are my questions: 1- Is it a Ford 9 "or is it a Ford 8 3/4", is there this differential? 2- Is it a Ford 9 "with a ring diameter of 8 3/4"? 3- It has a ratio of 3.00 and the shafts have 28 splines. I want to modify it to use a 4.11 ratio with 31 spline shafts. What do I need to change in order to update it?

I've also went through at least 8 - 10 different repair/rebuild/shop Manuals,by various publishers and can't find a reference to these dimensions anywhere. But thanks for the reply anyway. If you have an empty carrier housing and a simple ruler or tape measure, you can eye-ball the axle/bearing centerline.to get the first measurement.
