    I purchased my white album here in australia in 1968. I was 16 years old. It is a top loader A 61653. A small ' Stereo ' printed on the top right hand corner on the back. Both vinyl records have STEREO printed in large letters. Made by EMI in australia.

    I'm thinking I bought mine in the U.S. around 1971, and it's embossed and a very high number of 2013004. It's in excellent shape as I've played the CDs and ripped versions for years and haven't touched the vinyl. Since I just recently resurrected my old turntable I guess I will put it on for a spin right now. 🙂

    Wow, just listened to my White Album for the first time in decades and although the vinyl is pristine the sound quality sucks. I just don't remember it being that poor quality of engineering. I put on my copy of the Abbey Road reissue and it's beautiful, as good as CD if not better to my old ears. Now I need to try my original Red and Blue albums, and compare to the CDs.

    For the first few years UK pressings also had a plain white photo separator or spacer, first press sleeves opening from the top are numbered from 1 to approx. 625,000 & whilst there are batch exceptions most of the first 300,000 are mono. the second 300k ( 300,000 to 599,999 ) are mostly stereo & the final 25k ( 600-625000 or so ) are mono & were probably printed to cover the final flurry of mono discs before EMI ended that format. It is correct to say that all first pressing must have the sold in UK text, however although the EMI recording text was omitted on the earliest labels by the time it came to affix them to the discs the labels had been corrected & interesting the lowest stampered discs ( 1G ) nearly always seem to have the later EMI recording text labels on them showing how complicated an issue this can be. Finally before about 1971 you can have -2 or -1 matrix discs on a stereo yet from after 1971 until around 1976 they are all -1-1-1-1 only. With mono's these are usually -1-1-1-1 but at the very end you can get -2s and even a -3 or -4 mono matrix, these being usually for disc 2 only , i have only even seen a -3 or -4 with a sleeve over 600,000 but later swapping means that matching sleeves & discs is no longer an exact science ( in fact it never really was as when released & for many years after, many UK record shops would keep vinyl behind the counter matching them up with the sleeves on purchase, which probably explains why stereo discs in mono sleeves or vice versa are also not uncommon )

    I just came into several Beatles albums. Looking at my white album, for sure it is not first print from the UK. And possibly not 1st print of USA either. it has the serial # on the front...and the embossed The BEATLES on the front. It does have the Stereo on the back right top corner. But it does have the hyphen's on OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA. Also has The continuing Story of Bungalow Bill....My question is how can I tell if this was bought in 1968 or if it is much later? thank you for any help you can give me.

I thought only UK copies has the 8 digit number. Is this a case that this guy I bought the album from, mixed and matched? In other words had vinyls from Sweden and put them together with an English cover? Hope you can help Rui

    For what it’s worth: Mine looks like it might be a second pressing or later. “The Beattles” is still embossed/raised. I can’t find any serial number on it. It looks very old and well worn. Simone wrote her name and the date of April 15/69 in it which seems to lineup with a second pressing. The inside left has “SWBO 101” printed on it in the same gray color as the other printing like the names of the songs and “stereo” on the back.

    @jamiespinks3179 Hello Jamie, I recently bought one at a garage sale for $5 Canadian. I believe it's a US second pressing as it is a side loader (SWBO-101). The Beatles name is embossed on the front but there is no serial number. All the song titles are spelled correctly except for Rocky Raccoon with only one 'c'. Odd that there is no pressing/serial #. Discogs say it's a 1973 release. Would you happen to know? Thanks for your time.

  • @jamiespinks3179

    @jamiespinks3179

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tom , so the top loaders ie 1968 first run (uk) had a numbering (7digits ) from 1-630,000 or so. Then in the early 70s they restarted the numbers from 100,000 but with the different font and they were only 6 digits this time and they didn't go as high I believe. So your later pressing has a lower number as it was from the new issue of later numbers.

    Yes there can be many different pressings from any countries but there some nice and easy indicators to show what it might be. The original release in the US was on apple so a full capitol label indicates a later pressing anf there were the purple and orange label ones. Also later copies ditched the serial number in many places. And the embossing can vary but as with the numbers most later ones use printed writing
