Great information. My son is doing a GT project at school and this is just great for him to talk about while presenting his Axolotl project.

My axolotl just laid like lot of eggs a few days ago... how long should I leave them in the tank before I take them out into the other tank?

I thought I had 2 female axolotls, but one just had a bunch of eggs around the aquarium. Is it possible to have unfertilized eggs? There is about 50 of them

My son and I just purchased two axolotls and the female just laid her eggs. Just wanted to see if you can help, we will appreciate your insight on whether it's early to separate the eggs from the parents? And whether we should separate both male and female so the female could have time to rest and rejuvenate?

Hey! Congrats on the new Axolotl! If they were purchased together, from the same pet store, and look similar, chances are they're siblings, and it's best not to keep the eggs from sibling Axolotl to maintain the best genetics we can for them, especially as they were extinct in the wild and need all the help from us as they can get! If your tank has places for the female to hide and relax, and is big enough, you shouldn't need to move the female if she has hiding places in the tank, giving them lots of hiding places is really important, and as long as they both have places they can go for alone time, they'll spend the time they want together, and the time the want to be by themselves in peace! When they have enough space and are not competing for resources, they're leave each other alone, and also get along much better! My Male and Female that did breed and have all my babies used to be in a 40 gallon long together and used to lay on top of each other and chill out for hours, and then sometimes they wouldn't look at each other, but they never chased, harassased or bit each other because if she wanted to get away from him, she had plants and hides and places to go out of sight of him! Make sure she's getting plenty of food, some nice big earthworms or a high quality Axolotl pellets will help get her over developing all those eggs in no time!

Thank you! I've seen them hatch between 11 and 18C, they do definitely hatch quicker at the warmer temperatures though!!

What’s the difference between black and white eggs? Is it just the colour of the axolotl or ?

  • @TheJoyofAquascaping

The eggs will be the same color as the baby usually, so wild types will be darker and the golden lucys like mine will be a white to gold color, and as they grow and develop, the colors will become stronger!

I do have a question... Approx how many eggs actually survive? We ben searching this information and we haven't been able to find it. Hope you can help.

  • @TheJoyofAquascaping

Hey! I'm glad the info helped! The survival rares are generally very high in a rank inside where they are free from predators, in the wild though, the tiny newly hatched babies are susceptible to being predated on by everything else in the water that's bigger than them, so they either grow quickly or they don't last too long! In my pond, dragon and damsel fly larvae usually make sure that no babies survive, but if I wanted to grow them on, I can just move the eggs inside and protect them, and pretty much all the fertile ones will be free swimming babies in no time at all!

Have you ever had an axolotl that was appeared to be developing the same as the other eggs, but with no egg sac? He’s moving around and everything, and I sucked him up with a baster, and he appears to have no egg sack.

Hey! Sometimes if they fall out of the egg sac they will just start moving around d bythemseves a bit, or perhaps it was just one of the first to finish up in its eggsac and left it on purpose, I hope they're all doing OK!! 👍👍👏👏🎉🎉

They were both golden leucistic!! I'm super jealous, I love the wild type, I'm hoping to get some this summer, but finding good ones that haven't been half chewed up is really hard in these parts!! 😭 how did things go with the eggs, were they all wild in the end?
