    First of all, great video :). I watched several of your videos and it's awesome to see how you care for them. Mine hatched 2 days ago but they refuse BBS, even fleeing from it. They are underdeveloped, quite small, as big as the ones in your thumbnail of this video. Do you know what I could do? I don't want them to starve just because they hatched early.

    Lexi Kamenev no they must be live food or else they won't eat them if your axolotl is about 3-4in the. You can feed bloodworm. If they are babies and you can't find live shrimp you can always try live daphnia.

    Hi, I have been raising axolotls for the past year and we have babies now! We have around 50 that hatched and they seem to be doing well. Woke up this morning and saw our brine shrimp hatchery malfunctioned over night and we lost of pretty big culture. At what age/size do you start to feed live or atleast try to switch them over?

  • @smolworm4468

    @smolworm4468

    5 жыл бұрын

    They have to be fed live when they’re babies. It’s at 3 months that they can start eating non-living things, like frozen bloodworms.

  • @smolworm4468

    Unless you’re asking when they can start eating earthworms, black worms, etc. I was told once they’re 4-5 inches they can start eating those.

    What are the pros and cons of brine shrimp vs daphnia (including availability- we're in the UK if this affects it)

  • @JulesAskalotl

    @JulesAskalotl

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not too sure about availability in the UK but I'm pretty sure you can get both there. Daphnia are great if you can get ahold of them and raise a colony that reproduces at the rate you need them. Brine shrimp can be a pain in the butt, because you have to hatch them yourself and if something goes wrong, you are out of food for the day. They also die within a few hours of being in freshwater, fouling the water. Daphnia stay alive in freshwater so they last longer. I always prefer daphnia, but haven't had success keeping a colony of them alive.

    Thank you I just found out that my axolotl is pregnant, what is better brine shrimp or dalphina? And were do I get them. Do I get live or freeze dried food? Can I give them frozen blood worm blocks?

  • @JulesAskalotl

    @JulesAskalotl

    4 жыл бұрын

    Axolotls don't get pregnant. They usually always carry eggs, and if a male lays sperm, will then lay a day or so later. I prefer daphnia because they stay alive in freshwater and don't foul the water within hours. It depends on where you live. If in the USA you can get them from Rhonda Moorman or ebay. Just search that name in the facebook groups like Axolotl Aholics or we love axolotl and you should find her. Freeze dried won't work, as they hunt via movement and not smell. Blood worm blocks won't work until they are a little older(2 months old or so)

    Cool vid I've had two axies for about 3 months now they are awesome pets I can now feed them by hand I have a question maybe u can answer I was told that I was sold a male and female but from what I've read the males get kinda like almost a bulge inbetween there legs do u know if this is true ? If so I think I was sold two males lol and if that's the case I want to trade a male for female as I feel they will get along better and I would also like to have babies to sell to people because they are pretty hard to find around here and a lot of people I know fall In love with them any info is appreciated and once again cool video

    Tony 4780 if you check out my video "how to tell an axolotls gender" you may have more luck with identifying their gender. If you plan to get a female and male I would advise you also plan to get a separate tank because they need to be kept separate or they will overbreed and the female could die as a result

  • @JulesAskalotl

    @JulesAskalotl

    8 жыл бұрын

    I use cycled water from my Axolotl tank. I test it very frequently to make sure ammonia and nitrite are at 0 and the nitrates are below 20. For best results, use tap water to avoid accidentally using tank water that may have ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.

    why remove babies over removing the parents?

  • @JulesAskalotl

    Mostly because the tank is cycled and if you remove the axolotls then the water no longer has a good ammonia source, and the cycle will likely crash. You also will have to put the parent's somewhere and your tank is likely the only tank that is cycled. The eggs don't require as much space as the parents and can get sucked into many filters. The babies also eat tiny bits of live food that can get sucked into a filter and lost when there is such a large tank.

    ohh you don't just have them all on one pump system that makes sense then

  • @JulesAskalotl

    even if they all were on the same pump system, I wouldn't recommend it because daphnia and bbs would get sucked into the filter, or the babies could be sucked into the filter.

    you can have other small fish in the tank with the axolotl's but they have to be fast fish like neon tetras or molies

    tetras and mollies are tropical fish, which means they require warmer temperatures than the axolotls can withstand. They also would bite at the axolotls gills.

    Mollies require 72 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Tetras require 75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Axolotls require temperatures below 70 degrees. Axolotls can eat tetras and mollies and Tetras and Mollies can nip the axolotls gills. There is a difference between surviving and thriving and not being in proper temperatures will shorten lifespans.
