Why don't they put transmission dipsticks in cars anymore? How do you know when the fluid is dirty or low? I have a stick in my GMC Truck, so it must be new vehicles or small cars. And what kind of car was it that had the misfire ignition coil diagnosed as a transmission problem? So we know which models to look out for if there's a problem.

Could be a motor mount. Also could be the transmission, something happened to the gears that run while in 5th and they are now out of balance. Could be in the planetary gearset that runs for 5th that some teeth broke off and are now in the filter in the transmission, but they vibrate while spinning within. Hope its a motor mount for your sake.

@@TIm7981 I agree, I don't trust mechanics. My mom has taken her Chrysler van in the past to mechanics who were just parts swappers, who would charge hundreds of dollars, and not fix the problem at all. One mechanic even used my mom's van for personal use and put 200 miles on it. I'm convinced that a lot of independent mechanics are either incompetent or crooks. Cars these days are so complex, that I think these old school mechanics don't know crap anymore. I'm wondering if it's best to get a car serviced or repaired at a dealership nowadays.

The sum of the video is this: 1) Don't buy a car whose transmission's have a lousy track record. 2) Tread lightly when it comes to repairing your transmission - the odds are that it might not even get diagnosed or correctly fixed the first time. 3) Find a local "Scotty Kilmer" who knows what he's doing, is honest, and has the experience, tools and skills you need to get the job done right the first time. 4) Watch Scotty's videos faithfully and keep yourself informed about the vehicle that you own. Otherwise, the next victim of auto mechanic incompetence, or outright fraud, my just might be you. Great videos. I've saved tons of money by watching your videos. Thanks!

@@campkira Diagnostic Trouble Codes rarely tell you what the exact failure is. A DTC tells a technician the general area of a failure. Let's say your car has a P0302 (cylinder #2 misfire). It could be worn spark plug electrodes, spark plug wire out of spec, failed ignition coil, if OHC engine, oil could be leaking past the spark plug seals, bad ECM, damaged wiring in ignition circuit...the list goes on. That's why the engineers create troubleshooting trees.

I bought a 1999 Toyota Solara (6 cyl) at an auction for $3000 five years ago. It had about 165,000 miles on it then and now it has 230,000 miles on it. I put some cash into it when I first bought it by having the timing belt, water pump and alternator changed as well as having an oil leak fixed. That job cost me $1,500 at Yokem Toyota here in Shreveport. I haven't had not one issue with "Lucille" since I bought it. Every time I think about selling it I know that I will not get back what I've put into it like new tires, update stereo system, paint, tint, etc. It runs so smooth and quiet and I will probably keep it until she decides that she's ready to retire.

My mom has an Cadillac Escalade that needed a transmission replace because she managed to sever the transmission cooling lines by running over something (Can't remember what) and she drove it a few miles before she notice that it had a hard time going from a stop since the fluid was near empty.. it was to late to save even after only a few miles... so she bought a rebuild tranny for it, from DJ's Transmissions.. their only screw up was that the transmission was for the 5.3L 2wd.. but was put in the Cadillac equipped with the 6.0L and AWD.. that was over a 150,000 miles ago! The truck has 320K miles on and still runs like new!! Powerful and quick as hell.. can tow and has NO overheating problems with the drive-train. It's crazy to think that something with over 300k ion it and a re-manufacture transmission (dyno checked) is just as capable and fast as when bought new.. I think the main point is HAVE THE REBUILT TRANSMISSION DYNO CHECKED!! That is my 5 cents

Similar experience. My 87 4runner's overdrive was slipping. A couple of mechanics of course said it's the transmission. I didn't want to deal with that so I just let it go. Some time later it was leaking a lot of oil so I took care of that, which was an oil pump. Once that was fixed the overdrive was back to normal.

My Camry suddenly developed a problem where it felt like the transmission was slipping so I took it into a local Toyota dealership who told me the transmission voice toast. I had an extended warranty from fidelity so they completely replace the entire transmission in torque converter Pentecost of around $4,500. Driving the car home from the dealership it started doing the exact same thing only worse so I took it to my regular mechanic who determined I had somehow gotten water in my gas tank. He told me to immediately top off the tank NC if that corrected the issue and it did. That $4,500 transmission job only cost me $50 for the deductible but that ratchet dealership took fidelity Insurance for almost five grand. Apparently that was a common issue with condensation buildup in that generation Camry so the dealership had to have known that was the issue.

A lot of newer cars use software to estimate the engine load by using the engine sensors. As the sensors age, some of them start to report slightly inaccurate data. This is called sensor creep. Scotty I really appreciate your channel. I have a 2007 Ford Freestyle w/CVT. I got it used. Had 3 previous owners. 2 of them family. Pretty sure none of the did a lot of maintenance or any of the transmission. Got it with around 120,000-130,000 miles. Now has 166,000 I had it serviced a last year ago at a reputable tranny shop. So far it seemed to only have problems when its Winter. It won’t shift when really cold. I started letting it warm up for 30 min and that helped. The wrench light comes on (engine light) comes on for something different. Wrench light is what comes on for the tranny problems. Anyway on it would still shift but just into low gears and not that smoothly. Most of the time though if the wrench light was on it wouldn’t want to shift. If I then turn the car off and then restart it the wrench light would go away. Then the car would shift fine (if it had previously been warmed up for at least 30 min that is). I have had a couple motor mounts replaced in the last 3 years. I just had the plugs and wires changed 3 months ago. Haven’t had the trans fluid level checked yet this year to see if it’s low or burned. The Serpentine belt is grazed and I was going to replace that and the gears. Don’t know if that can contribute to the tranny problems. Engine light for the cat inverter has been on and I haven’t done anything with that yet due to lack of funds. Don’t know if that can contribute to tranny issues. Could it be motor mounts adding problems for the tranny? Software? So far it has not had a problem in warm weather months. Doesn’t mean it won’t this year as it seems to have progressively gotten wrote over the last 2 winters What do you think?

About 12 or 13 years ago when my 2001 E320 went into limp mode and throwing bunch of 7xx codes, I had it towed to 2 different “reputable” transmission shops, after about 2 hours diagnosis at each shop the verdict was I was looking at a rebuild. If I’m not mistaken both were about 6 grand-ish. I just couldn’t take the fact that a 7 year old 50K miles transmission would fail, after I religiously maintained it, anyway I had to leave town for work travel so I just put it on back burner and left town. I rented a car for a week after I came back. Meanwhile some search on the net and some more testing on the car, I narrowed it down to floor shifter issue. Also just out of coincidence gf back then verified that she was having Starbucks in the cup holder and spilled it on the shifter, she cleaned it up of course but the next day the problem started when I was driving to work. Hmmmm, more search and that points out to shifter unit is definitely the issue, time to head over to local pick and pull also keep an eye on the net for a spare part. After 2 days part shows up at my door and I swapped it the same night, clear the codes and kaboom. Since then never had a shifting issue. I’m sick of these dishonest crooks. As much as I criticize Scotty and his skills on the modern cars, I always appreciate his honesty and being completely open about the subject.

Hey Scotty Kilmer. I recently changed my head gasket on my 2004 Buick rendezvous almost by myself with some help from KZread and advice from the guys in my immediate family who didn't think I could do it. Well my dad told me I should drop the oil pan and check it for any metal bits. To be honest I'm fairly new to mechanic work so I pulled the transmission pan by mistake because I just wasn't using my head. I later realized what I did wrong but I figured oh well, the transmission fluid needed changed anyway because it was so dirty it was black. I bought it used. Had no idea what I was doing. Didn't know the first thing about owning a car. Now it's got over 258000 miles on it. The head gasket job was successful. I put all new transmission fluid in and changed the filter and gasket while I had the pan off. Now my transmission has started slipping here and there. It used to slip once in awhile but now it's more often. I saw your video about how changing the fluid that hasn't been changed in awhile can actually damage the trans. Will the Lucas stop slip still work for my car? I've had several people tell me I shouldn't try to rebuild my automatic transmission on my own. But I can't afford thousands of dollars to get it done for me. Please give me some good advice!

With those transmissions that have no dipstick, it does not mean sealed for life. They are sealed against the owner. Most of these have a filler plug somewhere. On some Ford Falcons, it is on the right hand rear of the transmission case. The fluid & filter can be changed in these, but filling them is a pain.

I have a 20yr/200k powertrain warranty. Had them take a look recently cause the trans was slipping or shifting jerky when accelrating slowly. They recommended and did a fluid change and adaptive learning reset. Cost $200. Ok, fine. but 6wks later and its doing it again. 130k on the vehicle. Maintenance done properly since new. Glad I watched this vid. Going to read the computer with a cheap reader next!!

Scotty is great but he probably wouldn't know how to mess with those new high tech super cars. Probably better than most. I'd let him look look at my civic and Passat anyday
