    One of the most informative videos on African cichlids. This helped clear up some things I was worried about. In particular the shape of the dorsal fin. Currently all my juvenile peacocks have rounded dorsal fins. But learned from this video that they change shape as they grow. But at the end of the day, like you said, nothing is guaranteed. Thank you very much

    You beat me to it. The idea to use those concrete cinder blocks in an aquarium. For me, living in NYC with soft acid water, I had been mentally considering using them to increase alkalinity and for cover for females and for subdominant males. Use a file or coarse sandpaper to smooth out those hole edges to avoid the fish scraping themselves. Good thinking.

  • @QuebecCichlides

    @QuebecCichlides

    6 жыл бұрын

    The bricks I use aren't alkaline. They're just there as a cheap decoration :P Pour some vinegar on your rock to know if it's alkaline. If it is, it will make bubbles, like with vinegar and baking soda. You won't be able to make a "papier-mâché" volcano out of it though😂

  • @PalJoey-rm2yh

    @PalJoey-rm2yh

    6 жыл бұрын

    The binder in cinder blocks is cement, which is made with lime, which is highly alkaline. Now, the rate at which that dissolves in the water is probably pretty slow. Probably just fast enough to help maintain the higher pH Africans need since the waste they create is acid. But that's why they have test kits.

    QuebecCichlides I looked up the word synodontis and found out that there’s a lot of catfish species some of them swim upside down and some of them makes squeaking noises many years ago I had a catfish I think it was from one of the lakes in Africa like thing and Nikki or Lake Victoria and he jumped out of my Fishtank and landed on the ground it was there for many hours it dried it all up I put it back in the tank it floated but it was still alive and then amazingly enough it’s weighing down on Aretha of a rock and hit there for several weeks then I seen it’s starting to eat in amazingly enough within a month it was back to its normal self it was amazing I’ve never forgot it and I love that catfish I just don’t know what it’s called but it did make that squeaking noise it was dark in color and head light blue spots on it

    THANK YOU! I have a female Electric Yellow Labidochromis who bred with a large yellow orange cichlid (exact species unknown) that was given to me (not same breed). I could not figure at first why the larger guy was so aggressive-later I realized they were “an item” and he was protecting his own. After she had put the eggs in her mouth and I finally figure out what that was all about (had no idea about the mouth breeder) then I saw him prepping and courting another female in the tank and getting super aggressive, so needless to say, he got moved out of the tank to his own dwelling. The remainder I believe were females and all the trouble in the tank went away. Now I have 17-20 little ones that were from the mouth breeder. Thriving. So sexing them will be quite important and then figure out what to do with the mixed breeds….. I have NO idea!

    The information on red empress is not true. She stated that they dont color up till a minimum of 2 years.... I have some that are 8 months old already coloring up with blue on the face and red in the body. So that's not true. Alot of things determine how quick they color up.

  • @QuebecCichlides

    Good for you. Most of the time, they color up at 2 years old, like many other haps. Those imported from Asian suppliers often color up young because of added hormones. Just because something happened to you doesn't make it a general rule.

    @@QuebecCichlides I have bred red empress for years, and I have always had them color up way before 2 years without adding hormones.. just like deep water haps.
