How To Tell If Something Is Valuable for Resale | Etsy Vintage Seller Tips

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi! I’m Andi Jenkins and I’m a thrifter, vintage reseller and interior stylist. In today’s video, I'm teaching you how to tell is something is valuable and worth picking up for resale. If you've ever been unsure of what to pick up at the thrift store (as a new reseller or someone who wants to get into a new product category), then follow my tips to ensure you're picking up quality pieces for your shop, booth or website.

When I first started my Etsy shops I only bought inventory that I felt confident was collectible and that I liked. This meant that if my confidence of a resale was misfounded and the item didn’t sell, then I would be left with something I rather liked and not a piece of decor I thought was hideous. As my knowledge expanded I could take greater risks and venture into buying an item that had a great profit margin even though it wasn’t my taste.

Great tips and a very good strategy when you're first starting out. When I sold clothes, I usually picked up things in my size so I could wear them if they didn't sell. ;) I agree that as you get more experienced, you can take more risks. Thanks so much for your insight!

I am so glad I found you. You are very fun and informative to watch. Love your style. I’m a nurse but have always loved decorating. And in 2023, I found vintage thrifting. I can’t stop. It is so fun.

I have that same piece of striped Italian pottery, and I love it so much! I was ecstatic the day I found it in a Hospice Resale Store local to me in FL. Mine has a tiny bit of chipping on the rim, but since I was buying it for myself, I forgave it. It makes me happy every time I see it on my shelf. I also work in a bookstore, so I see home, garden, decorating, architecture, art, fashion, and photography magazines pass through the store every month--tons of them. So visit your local newstand or bookstore, even if you're just browsing.

It's so funny because one of my fav Stylists, Emily Henderson was just saying she thinks it's coming BACK in style. And I was like, it never really went out and something people will always be collectors of. I know in Portland, MCM estate sales are always packed with dealers.

Great content!! I too search the trends to see what interior designers are saying. Magazine covers can tell you a lot! Cool tone metals are on my list - scoring well so far. Pewter is always a must as is brass.

Great video - really informative, thank you. New subscriber here! I'm a UK vintage etsy seller, with around 40% of our sales to USA. It's so important to keep on top of what customers are looking for.

Yes, it's always important to see the trends within what's selling. I shopped my way through Wales, London and the Midlands last spring. Did my first car boot sale. I brought home so many things!

Another way to recognize value in a piece, China is more valuable if it is bone china, which is very light. Crazing doesn't equal value or age as it can be faked. Incised or etched artist mark often is a mark of value. Hand written over stamped is something I look for as well I lucked into some pottery made in Ireland and the 12 pieces I got for peanuts can almost fund my other purchases. Well made pottery is valuable, but it takes time to recognize what that looks like. Hey out and look, touch, talk with the other thrifters you see.

You're so right about china. It's funny how what is a mark of quality for one item is not for another. Great point! Thanks for sharing!
