mouth brooders like mbuna female cichlid keep their eggs in their mouth until they hatch. for a successful breeding you need to strip the fish from its eggs or let it spit them out naturally when they are ready. either way you need to know how to identify a female cichlid is holding eggs.
this video contains some tips to spot a female cichlid with eggs in its mouth showing a female electric yellow cichlid in different stages of holding period.
this video applies to all mouth brooders, espcially mbuna cichlids like yellow labs, demasoni cichlids and peacock cichlids

Thanks for the video! I really didn't realize these were mouth brooders! I thought they were more like convicts. I was wondering why the one I thought was a female kept looking like she was chewing gum, moving her mouth often. I think I know why now! Question, what kind of plecos are those?!? They are really pretty!!!

I have a large male and female, the male is quite aggressive and always wants to mate, so I keep them separated usually I kept them together for a hour or 2 the other day as I was doing some tank work, then i removed the male and she's now holding eggs I'm just sceptical if they actually did manage to successfully breed in that small time or is she carrying unfertilised eggs So in short, will a female still hold unfertilised eggs or will she only carry eggs that are 100% fertilised?

The female cannot know if the eggs are good or no...
Hi, i have a quastion it is not about the vidieo but i realy need help, i have a pair of jewel cichlids with there fry that are almost 3 weeks old, i have to leav the house for like 2 - 4 days max, but my quastion is would the parents eat there babys if they get hungry and would the fry survive, i have algie in the tank, i bought " block fish food " would it be enogh, thank you so much 🙂

Is it normal for yellow labs to have small mouths? I have 1 female that has a small mouth compared to the rest and they are the same size
