How To Teach Your Dog To Look At You - Professional Dog Training Tips

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, I'm going to show you how to teach your dog to look at you. We have been talking about leadership a lot lately, and one of the great ways to get your dog to look to you for information is by reinforcing them when they make eye contact with you. You can actually make it very clear to your dog that looking at you is a valuable behavior, by teaching them that they can be rewarded for doing that very thing!

I just wanna say I’m very very grateful for all your training videos. They are always so detailed, comprehensive and fool proof. I find it extremely helpful when you mention that we should respect their natural curiosity/desire but reward them for making the right choices. That makes so much sense and can be applied to so many scenarios! Thanksss

Thank you so much for this video! This was super helpful, I did this years ago with my previous dog. We just got a new adoption dog and couldn’t remember the steps and if it was “Look at me” or “Watch me”. You’re the best! Really great note at the end about letting the dogs watch other dogs and people or whatever else, makes so much sense

Great lesson! I have a Belgian Malinois puppy. Yep! For real! LOL. He is very eager to learn, but I do need impressive teaching tools such as yours to help me in his training! I'm so happy to know that there are people out there like you who are willing to share their knowledge free of charge. I've subscribed and I'm going to look at all of your other one command videos. Your videos are clear-cut, high quality sound and video, and just the right length. Thank you!

If my dog is maintaining eye contact for an extended period, do I just say ”Yes” and reward her every few seconds or should I wait for her to break it and then refocus her again?

I love this! My dog knows "look at me" but when it comes to distractions and doing Rally, we're still working on this and you had some useful tips here that I will try out. I was rewarding from my treat pouch in so many areas of training my dog! The other struggle I have is with loose leash walking. I'm teaching him to walk besides me without needing to feel the need to look at me at all times like when we are "heeling". Poor little guy thinks he needs to look at me the entire time so I try to say "yes" and give a treat at varying times. It's still a work in progress though.

Sounds like you’ve been doing a great job with him so far, Lilia! Continue rewarding all of those great efforts! It’s nice to hear how attentive he is to you when you’re walking on leash. Your random reinforcement is a good idea, and I think he will “settle in” to a nice amount of attention and position in time. Keep up the great work! Happy Training! ~Ken

That was in one of the lose leash training videos. Just keep the treat in your closed hand, let him smell it, but don't give it to him unless he has all four paws on the ground. Just hold it in front of his nose until he sits. Jumping = no reward, sitting like a good boy = reward.

Not sure if anyone still here to help, but I’m wondering the (usual) time frame as to when these transitions from one step to another taken place? For instance transitioning from with the food in hand to having food on pouch, etc. I’m sure it varies dog to dog, but in general, how long to master the steps in “Look at Me?” Hours, days, weeks? Thanks much!

In order to change this behavior, II want my dog to look at me when an unfamiliar dog approaches and let me tell the unfamiliar dog to go away. Do you have any other suggestions?

When I was training my dog, he liked to jump at my hand for the treat. What worked for me is the following, give a sharp "no" and move your hand away. repeat that as many times as it takes. When, they take the treat nicely or wait for permission, reward them. Eventually, he learned that he couldn't just steal the treat out of my hand. But this is just my personal experience, I'm not a professional trainer in anyway.

PLEASE HELP. I'M FOSTERING A 1.5 Y/O FEMALE DOBERMAN W/DOG REACTIVITY & I'M WORRIED ABOUT HER FUTURE (I don't think she is adoption ready...but she is listed for adoption) I have fostered dogs for years & am currently fostering a 1.5 y/o F Doberman. I'm worried for her, so I put her through GROUP obedience out of my pocket. She completed the 6 weeks & her socialization is still the main issue (which is why I chose GROUP class). Oddly, she lives with a male Weim-GSP, & female Am-Eng bulldog & 2 cats (does fine). She won't look at me on command. When she is distracted she intentionally avoids my eyes, & death stares at her target dog (in obedience & on walks at home...she's A BIT less reactive when instructor brings us outside for loose leash training) She improved with people reactivity BUT her dog reactivity is AWFUL. She made small progess with big dogs & NO PROGRESS with the little schnauzer in the group class (EVERY class, multiple times she zones on the schnauzer & LUNGES, GROWLS, FROTHS). She's on a Herm sprenger & she hurts herself, gets frustrated & just spirals for a good 20 seconds (feels like eternity) before she goes in a sit (she doesn't relax, she is still clearly amped). We're redoing the 6 week GROUP class. She knows the commands, I need her have coping mechanism & impulse control around other dogs. Do you have any advice on how I can stop the reactivity? It happens on leash walks too? I try to be proactive, but she knows EVERY house with a dog & the group class has dogs & becomes amped. I put her in sits, body block, "look at me" but she sits waiting me out (I have to go in the classroom &finish my dog walk, so it ends up with her hurting herself by herm sprenger correction pops or just lunging AS I tell her leave it) I have done this group class (1 & 2) with another dogs needing socializing & it's a great company with a good syllabus, spacious class etc."

We do have some plans for vlogs in the near future, and we are really looking forward to those. But until we have a little more time, we have to stick to our current teaching videos. It's actually funny you would ask about this now. Kayl and I were talking just the other day about going through some old vlog episodes to see if we could create something random that was vlog styled maybe once per month. The verdict is still out on that idea, but if you'd like to check out a playlist with some random episodes of the vlog, in case you missed some I can post a link HERE: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXqny7ancsfVpco.html Thank you for watching, and I look forward to creating a couple of vlog episodes for you and the other people who followed that content in the future! What age do you recommend working on things like this? And other basic commands? We just brought home our puppy, hes 8 weeks old. I just saw another channel that said he doesnt really start with training until they are over 5 months old. At this point they are just basically rewarding "accidental good behavior" but not asking too much of them yet. What are your thoughts?

  • @McCannDogs

Hi there, MegsMakeupLife*! You can do really simple exercises with your puppy like luring with food, simple handling exercises, “loading their name” where you say your puppy’s name then feed them a treat, or piece of their meal. We spend the first couple of weeks with our own puppies doing these kinds of things, which teach the puppy how to learn, and what they can do to get rewarded. Our puppy classes at our training facility begin for puppies at 10 weeks of age and above. Puppies are able to start learning some of these simple skills and they can to begin to learn skills like “sit” and “here, here” (which is an informal recall). I have a playlist with some videos that will help you to know what things you can work on right now to give your puppy a great start with learning! @@McCannDogs thank you so much. It is so important to us to get this right. There is nothing that ruins an expirence being around a dog than a dog with no manners. They are so much more enjoyable when they arent crazy and out of control. But i dont want to overwhelm my puppy too soon and stress him out. And I dont want to "miss the boat" and wait too long and have it be more difficult to teach them basics. I hope that all made sense. Thank you so much for your response! We aren't just throwing his food in bowl, we have been using that as a time to teach him his name and lure him around. We will try practicing "look at me" too!

@@megancotterly9357 Hi! I had a new puppy a few months ago I got him at 8 weeks old as well, if it's any help the best thing I did at that point was to teach him his name, it saved me so much trouble. He was very tiny and curious, so it was great that whenever I said his name he came back to me no matter what he was doing or where he was (like under the bed or couch). I focused almost solely on his name, by giving him 3/4 of his meals just saying his name and rewarding, then letting him get distracted and move a little bit away, saying his name and luring him back to me and giving him the food at my feet, this helped with his recall as well when I started teaching that. Sit, down and paw were easy to teach as well, but it took way longer for him to get it when he was that young than it takes now to teach him something new, so just a bit of patience. As a side note, my doggie is extremely food motivated so that helped a lot.
