Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I'm working on getting this 4 year old dressage horse to hook on and follow me. working in the round pen loose can be a helpful tool. Here are some tips on how to get your horse more with you.

In the spirit of learning, I'm going to add to this with some advanced liberty training for those who are interested. I learned this from a horseman who, like Joseph, thought outside the box but used the round corral to do it. When the horse learns to follow at the walk you can move up to the trot and combine this with sharp turns, halts, transitions. The horse becomes like your shadow and has fun with you. If you have piaffe in hand, you can teach the horse to piaffe between the whips with no tack. One whip in front, one behind and the horse piaffes in place. You can teach the volte where the horse is walking and later trotting or cantering around the round corral but on request makes a small circle (volte) around you. You say "volte" and the horse turns onto the circle. This is introduced with a longe line and later at liberty. The coup de' gras is the volte in passage with piaffe transitions at liberty. Spanish Walk is an elegant movement no longer valued much, but you may have seen videos of a trainer and horse doing the Spanish Walk together in unison. Teaching the horse to bow and lie down is also rewarding time well spent. None of this is necessary to get high scores on your dressage tests. It's just another venue to have fun with horses and learn how they learn. I haven't included all of the possibilities but you get the idea. I'm grateful for the time I spent on this rewarding detour. It's not something I ever saw myself doing, but once I got started, I was hooked. And Joseph........well, there aren't many like him.

Im doing different for same reason. I walk her, shes super eager to move then I stop. She keeps going and ends up having to circles around me a few times. Basically, I let her create her own pressure by continuing when I stopped and has to stop to stop to relieve the pressure of turning in place. When she stops, I start walking again. Keep in mind im fit and can move out of harms way if needed. And she's a very smart 13yo gray shire, so your mileage may vary.

Warwick Schiller has a video called is your horse on his iPhone that is kind of applicable to what you are talking about

sue mcfarlane You've mentioned Warwick Schiller in several comments on different Joseph Newcomb videos. Warwick is excellent, but in my humble opinion, so is Joseph. Each has his own way of presenting the info.

I agree that both Warwick and Joseph explain and show hooking on beautifully! Both really GET horses and are empathic with them. All my love and gratitude to both of you!

He's still a baby, and he should be allowed to be a baby for another few years. Babies shouldn't have to work

@@Chicken_Friez not everything is fully developed yet. He's still growing and developing. People riding horses too early increases their chances of kissing spines and neck damage but each to their own I guess.
