How to tape THUMB

How to tape your thumb - In this video we show how to tape yourr thumb. This is an ideal self taping technique for those returning to contact or ball sports post thumb sprain.
Sports which utilise this particular strapping technique include volleyball, basketball, Australian rules football and soccer goalkeepers.
Often in these sports you may sprain the ligaments that support the thumb or in other words stretch them beyond their limits. This commonly happens when a strong force bends the thumb backward, away from the palm of the hand. The most common way for this to occur is by falling onto an outstretched hand or a ball. directly impacting the thumb.
In other situations you may sustain a lateral force which can damage the lateral structures of the thumb. This may occur from direct impact from a player or ball.
Most thumb sprains involve the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), which is located on the inside of the joint where the thumb meets the palm. An injury to this ligament can be painful and may make your thumb feel loose or unstable. It may also weaken your ability to pinch or grasp objects between your thumb and index finger.
Some other common thumb injuries could include thumb dislocation, thumb fracture and ligament damage of the thumb.
