How to Tap Tune the Soundboard tone bars.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I'm tuning the soundboard by removing thickness for the tone bars and measuring the frequency with Peterson's Strobosoft Strobe tuner.

    I am so glad I found your channel. This takes Roger Siminoff's brilliant work in books and makes it come to life for me. I actually started this comment long before you mentioned his book. I know that he has many videos out now as well but each teacher adds to the students knowledge and your work here is invaluabe to me. Thank you again. I have been watching all morning, time to go to work now.

    tsstn hope you didn't end up late for work!! Roger does have good literature.. what I found hard was to apply without seeing it first when I first started.. I do try to fill the blanks I was struggling with early on..

    I don't think there is a luthier out there that would go to all this added work to show what goes into building an instrument for someone. I am loving this. And learning as we go. I will have to make a page on my website that shows all this stuff. I already have the next instrument design lined up when you finish this one :D ... is anyone interested in a good deal on a Gold Tone octave mandolin or mandola? haha

    Hi, Tomy! How would tuning of the body affect tuning of guitar? Will it resonate more with traditional mandolin tuning?

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    7 жыл бұрын

    moristar1101 theD# and C# I used in the video are usually used on Jazz guitar ( archtop) it all depends on the size of the instrument. I would recommend reading about it in the art of tap tuning. There is not a wrong way of doing it, but rather different target tuning. You can see this in my video on tuning a mandola backboard. I had to change the target tuning.

  • @Chiliarcher
    @Chiliarcher7 жыл бұрын

    Very informative, on what basis did you decide the bars to be exactly C# and D#?

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    7 жыл бұрын

    Chiliarcher archtop Jazz guitar are often tuned into D# and C#. Since the body is similar in size and the mandolin will only have a extra 2 strings i figured it would probably work pretty well . Thanks for your question ..

  • @MegaTahyeesDiwan-Al-Oud

    Do you think that there is a certain common (tap tone frequency) should be obtained during fabrication, in most of the acoustic instruments like guitars, lutes, Ouds, ... ? Or , each instrument has it’s own perfect tab tunes , that match it’s beautiful sound? And if they are different, How it can be determined for each acoustic instrument?

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think tap tuning helps to replicate a good sound from a previous build . The main idea is the difference between the Bass bar and treble bar. In this case a full step. Since I have great results I can now target the same tap tones for upcoming builds. I could also experiment from this point leaving it stiffer and see if I like it better. Between different size instruments the target note if different since the size of different. With personal experimentation you can find and decide which targets you personally prefer ..

    Tomy, excellent videos. How did you decide that you needed a one tone difference between the treble and bass sides of the mandolin? Is that just an arbitrary determination or is it based on traditional instrument construction?

    Tomy, have you found oiling an instrument soundboard vs. Shellac or varnishing it affected the sound?

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    7 жыл бұрын

    I do find a big difference between lacquer and shellac. I guess oiling would fall in the same category as shellac as it does not restrict the wood like a lacquer or varnish would..In all honesty I've never use oil on any build..

    On a 17" archtop do you do it the same way? Is it important to have the rims glued on or can you do this method without rims attached? Interested !

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    7 жыл бұрын

    Edad Martin I would, the body length on this one is just shy of 18". If the rim is not attached it works too, but the target tuning would obviously be different as the rim stiffens the assembly. You would have to make your own experiment..

    my thought is the brace should be in shape of I beam, thicker at top & bottom-thin in center. this will lower mass and allow faster sound creation.

    Hi Tomy, am really enjoying your videos and learning much. Is the tone bars made of the same wood as the sound board of from the same hardwood as the body? Since I don't have the tuning equipment, is their a rule of thumb in listening to the wood sound? Thanks much.

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ron, yes same wood as the soundboard. Quarter or riff sawn.(usually Spruce)For the rule of thumb, bring the plate( soundboard) to your ear holding one end and tap the bottom end with your finger before starting to remove wood. Then redo this step as you are removing wood until you feel that the plate is holding a vibration. That’s as close you will be without a tuning equipment. Hope this helps

    Tomy, why +2 cents? why not exactly D#?

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    6 жыл бұрын

    nhandutimusic thanks for your great question, I stopped there because I had the full step I was looking for between C# and D# and was close enough to my target. You are right, I could have brought it down to 0 cents. But like I’m explaining at the end of the video, with adding the fretboard and removing wood from where the fretboard will be glued on, the overall stiffness of the top plate ( soundboard) will change, but not the difference between the tones bars.. hope this helps, thanks for watching!

    hugo, Tomy is building this for me. I can tell you his prices are better than fair. I looked at a number of luthiers before I ordered. i got an amazing price for such a custom instrument. I am a full time gigging musician so honestly I am poor LOL. and I am feeling the money I saved ordering from Hovington a super investment considering how much time he has put into this build. I watched his work for 3 years before ordering. And I have never felt so confident in the purchase of something built in my life

    Why make it complicated when it is not... When installing de back and the neck, everything will change... Not worth the work... Just overthinking... Who says what note the soundboard as to be...

  • @HovingtonInstruments

    @HovingtonInstruments

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for sharing your opinion, but I do disagree and will continue to do this step on my builds as it sets the difference in between the tone bars and by knowing the frequency it can be replicated on another build. I am quite aware that it all changes when neck and back are added, and same could be said for the voicing part of the apertures. The idea is to maximize the resonance and being able to replicate on an another build. Although there is already targets to tune most instruments now, nothing prevents anyone to experiment with higher or lower notes. So in that regards, nobody tell what the note should be...
