We are planning an expansion of our KZread channel so we are looking for people that are interested in helping out on the channel.

I worked in jails, military and federal correctional institutions for 20 years(1974/1994) as an officer and shift supervisor, and in those 20 years I had to resort to using force 49 times. People ask me how I can have such an accurate count of physical incidents, well simply put I kept a copy of every incident report I was involved in and I still have them in my file at home. I was trained in an aikido like self-defense system while employed with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They concentrated on the techniques Ikkyo, Nikkyo Kotogashi which were trained against the attacks #1.Wrist grab, #2.Lapel garb,#3. Push/Punch and Sankyo which was used as a come along technique. Each of the first three began by initiating a step back(from a modified T stance) with a diversionary hand gesture to the attacker's face. It was really a open hand strike to the face but because of legal reasons it was taught as a diversionary hand gesture. I became proficient enough at this mini aikido system to soon become an instructor. The funny thing was it was very similar to the training I received years before in the US Marine Corps Correctional Training while stationed in Okinawa(1974/1975). I apologize for going on and on but in those 49 incidents I used ikkyo successfully 36 times. I used kotogashi once and nikkyo 6 times. I don't know why I used ikkyo more then any other technique it just seemed to come to me, I didn't train it more then any other technique. I have shodan ranks in Isshinryu karate, Judo and after my retirement I earned my shodan rank in aikijitsu. I trained the Bureau of Prisons system twice to three times a week for around 90 minutes to two hours with my fellow self defense instructor and a few other interested prison employees for 10 years. So I and my fellow employees got very proficient at those 4 techniques. In my 20 years the only injury I suffered at the hands of an unarmed inmate attacker was two scratches on my neck. I never used my judo or karate inside the walls which was weird as I trained in those the most in my off time for decades. How I defended myself against an inmate wielding a knife or razor blade weapon 6 times is a different story. Thanks for allowing me to relate my aikido experience.

I never see aikido demonstrated like this. Is this your expansion of aikido to make it much more practical. I don't like calling this a definite thing like aikido or karate or whatever. It's really self défense techniques for the street, and then it makes sense. Why call it aikido? Why does it need a fancy name? All you are doing is using aikido to make it something people recognize. The problem is that aikido has a bad name in the martial arts world as far as being practical for fighting. I can't argue that but again, what's the point of putting your techniques in a category like aikido instead of self défense. Using a more generic approach, you will avoid all the aikido haters and end up with a much bigger response.

Next time someone approaches you in a hostile situation, just play the intro music from this channel with your cell phone and you can both chill out at a bar and have a beer rather than fighting. ;)

Aikido works only as a complementary martial art. First learn boxing and wrestling. Than start learning aikido, wing tsun and all the fancy martial arts.

You guys have to be the most genuine examples I've seen on KZread to date. As aTomiki Ryu Aikido practitioner who worked the clubs in Christchurch New Zealand back in the 80's I really appreciate the practical approach you demonstrate that myself and my martial arts mates back in the day took in the real world. I don't train officially these days due to joint injuries but to see the simplistic approach is truly refreshing. Well done Gents, would love to look you up next time I'm back in the old country.

A nice clean demo! We always get questions about application in real life but it is easily demonstrated as both instructors have a practical experience. Aikido gets you out of a take down whereas an MMA grapple or formal Aikido lock to the ground leaves you vulnerable to an attackers friends. Attackers are usually with friends who can just stomp you if you go into a ground hold instead of being randori aware and on your féet ready.

Great video guys! I'm about to start my first go at being a doorman. So I've been watching your videos on loop. I do WIng chun and find a lot of similarities between the aikido and wing chun philosophies. Love the videos! Please keep them coming!!
