    This is my first time ever commenting on your videos. I’ve been watching for quite a while. I recently switched my Canon RF gear in favor of Fujifilm X-H2. Reason for me was the portability of a smaller kit with no compromise to image quality whatsoever. My work never changed. I’m glad you’ve added it to your arsenal. You should shoot more with it. If you’re ever in Houston, look me up.

    Thank you for another amazing video. I just ordered some fj400’s and the Manny Ortiz beauty dishes , thanks for the recommendation. I shoot Sony and Fujifilm and I have had the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 since it came out. I freakin’ love this lens. I would gladly pay double the price for it. It is great to hear your perspective on gear I already own. Glad I haven’t ordered light stands yet. Gracias hermano y cuidado con “las nalgitas.” 😂 Saludos desde San Antonio. Both shots are fantastic but I would vote for the close up shot.

    Hi Eli, been following your channel for awhile and I have found it so helpful. However I am struggling in an area and I feel I might be the only one. I shoot in raw and when I take studio shots of my kids I am looking at the histogram like I always do for other photos. I find that I can't gauge the accuracy of the brightness of the photo well with off camera flash. I mean how do I know I'm getting the right amount of light by the histogram standards? The back of my screen shows a JPEG as you know regardless if we shoot in raw. Looks good but then when brought into Lightroom it is usually underexposed. Is there anyway you could show us or myself what you look for in a histogram with off camera flash. I find it would be a tremendous help to myself and maybe some other subscribers in the same position. Thank you for any advice you might have 🙏🏻

    All the pictures look amazing but If I had to choose, The close up poses look more flattering. Side note... Do you use ND filters or do you always shoot at a high shutter speed with HSS to darken the background?

    I think the close-ups are a touch better only b/c it puts more emphasis on the subject; also gives a more "casually captured" vibe (vs "production-grade") to the image.

    Eli... it does sound like there was a lot of light (i.e. SS 1/5000). It would be really cool if you did a video on using an ND filter with HSS. (BTW, Marco is always getting in the way ;)

    Eli, with the Manny Ortiz BD, do you miss not having the double diffusion? I have looked at it and it's awful expensive to not have that double diffusion. Thoughts please?

  • @EliInfante

    @EliInfante

    I prefer without the double diffusion. When I first started OCF, I always thought we needed double-diffused modifiers. I found that mindset to be limiting and recently got into hard light.

    Instead of multiple trial and error shots, why not use a light meter such as a Sekonic 858, which can handle HSS, or standard flash modes. As you mention, the sun continues to go down, so you are limited in the time available. Something else to consider is using aperture priority mode so that the shutter speed will vary automatically in order to maintain the ambient lighting.

    sorry to be the debbie downer, but I think you have some fundamentally poor posing directing technique, especially on the image you chose to break down at the end. There are two specific things that in my opinion represent grave errors in posing a model. First you have her standing square to the camera -- presenting a models widest position. Then you further widen the pose by popping her hip out while allowing the jacket to hang down which effectively doubles her apparent width. I honestly don't see how you can present this as effective posing instruction. While she is a pretty model, the photos present her to my eye as being quite short, especially in the torso. The styling of the high waist denim shorts and bulky, fringed jacket present her torso akin to the shape of a linebacker. Not taking anything away from her as an attractive human, I just think the photos represent some bad decisions. I would further criticize your angle choice in that you prioritized the lines of the railing over the presentation of the model. To my eye, the camera level is too low. If you draw diagonal lines from corner to corner the intersection is virtually at her zipper. I would have a hard time justifying that as center of interest in a portrait or fashion shot. I generally stage my fashion shots with the camera level between a models hips and shoulders to eliminate angle distortion from tipping lens. If this were simply a lighting technical practice, I wouldn't bring all of this up, but I came to this video from Fstoppers where it was presented as Strategic Lighting and Posing.

    The model chose these photos, and she loved them. While I don't disagree with some of the points you've made, I do think you're overthinking it. I appreciate the feedback though. 😁
