I have ADHD and I relate so much to the struggle. Figuring out what to write down, while trying to focus on the professor, and understand what he’s saying is a juggling act. I don’t know how neurotypicals can do all that at ease. They must be aliens lol.

I honestly miss probably 40% of what happens in lecture, I just try to remember the broad interventions and focus on details when I go to write my own research papers because it's easier for me to dig into it on my own than when listening to a professor give a lecture

This has been so reassuring and helpful! Your description at the beginning where you explain why taking notes with ADHD is so much more complicated is spot on! For example, I always get so distracted by the formatting of my notes and will miss things in lectures because I'm too busy trying to format my notes "correctly". Deciding what is and isn't worth writing down is also SOOOO hard. I have been tempted to just record all my lectures and write the notes down at home so I can pause the lecture and catch up when needed. So when you said that you do this I was like yessssss I'm not the only one!!!

  • @TheVintageAcademic

I'm so glad this was reassuring for you!! I do tend to record my lecture, but I also lean a lot of the slides that (most) of my professors share with the class because I find myself unwilling to go back and listen to my lecture, especially towards the end of the semester. I'm glad this video found you though!

The problem is, I simply can’t do notetaking fast enough. I’m in nursing school and trying to memorize things but I’ll create a system and it’ll be too late to use because the system takes way too long to use but frankly there’s no systems out there that are as good as writing it down on a piece of paper for me.

It definitely takes time to figure out what works for you! In a fast-paced environment like nursing school, I would suggest switching to typed notes instead - faster to take and easier to search when you need to study!

As future workers in the healthcare field we’re gonna have to learn to type fast no matter what. Best of luck, if you got into nursing school you can finish it. ❤

I think something that would also help if you have an iPad is to not download apps or search anything that has nothing to do with your schoolwork. I wouldn't even FaceTime my family on it, in fact if its possible just delete the phone and music app from your iPad. Research shows that when you have one purpose for a place or item, it helps your mind to focus on that one purpose rather than what you COULD do. Like don't download music or take personal pictures on your iPad and be on your iPad in a place dedicated to studying under a lamp also dedicated to studying for 25-30 minutes. Then by the first sign of boredom, put away your iPad, turn off your lamp, and leave your study area to do something fun like play games or listen to music on your phone for like 5-10 minutes with discipline. Bonus points if you switch to a completely different class to work on.

Thank you for this. I found I have ADHD quite late into my adulthood. I'm not stupid, but due to this disability, I have been perceived as such. Lost my job and had several bad performance reviews on account of this. But lately, I have been diligently typing or writing whatever learning material I consume. I find that a combination of a person talking, along with subtitles or transcribed notes while I can frequently pause/play and take notes(on Udemy, EDX etc) is where I learn best. And I do have to take it slow, rushed learning is out of the question. It's like my brain is connected to the world on USB 1.0 while everyone is on USB 3.0. A slow interface is just what it is.

With the first method, a big obstacle to that is when a teacher makes the test even more difficult by being strict with how the answers should be given. Hi Jennifer! Of course your comment is valuable, it most definitely made me smile at the very least. I’m so happy to hear that my adhd content is well received because it’s been an important topic for me lately!

Staying focused in class is so difficult! Have you tried using fidget toys to help keep you present in class? I use them while I'm in discussion and it helps a lot!

my university developed over covid a lecture recording and live streaming system, which allows me to watch the lecture videos so i can pause for writing notes and not try to speedrun and then not be able to read them afterwards

about the processing auditory stuff, yes, I can look at people straight in the eye and try to listen but I then zone out and find my mind somewhere else. Growing up my sis said I'm absent minded most of the time when outdoors, also the thing I hate the most is difficulty absorbing despite eliminating/not having distractions. Your mind just gotta keep obsessing over something like wow I would like a refund please

Haha yup! It's helpful if you can use some kind of fidget toy while you're in class if your professor allows it! If not - I would ask for accommodations through the student disabilities office at your university so they can make arrangements for you!

What if it's difficult for me to even sit down and rewrite my notes, i'm so used to highschool teachers waiting on us to write the notes down and asking questions. I like writing them in person so I don't have to do it later and I can have everything in hand when I study but even that is super hard for me. I failed 4 classes last semester and i have trouble retaining information even.

Switch to typing your notes - it’s not as effective for memorization but it’s more important to get the info down for your reference Then, instead of re-writing your notes, turn them into flashcards. This way you’re still engaging in the info but it’s a different enough activity that it may help you stay focused Get accommodations - speak to your accommodations office to see if there is someone who can take notes for you so you can focus on listening instead of writing notes
