Another possibility for a tripod substitute for all the musicians: Music stands! They can change height and you could even tie the phone to it.

Good idea!
I subscribed to this channel to learn some basics to sew canvas for my small yacht. Bit i find this lady so engaging and (dare I say) beautiful that I now find myself watching dressmaking videos.
One of my new year resolutions is to make at least two garments inspired by Evelyn. Have a happy health restoring new year ❤
Clever ..now when will we get a 3d print body form? That would be splendid.
Fantastic Evelyn. I didn’t think it was possible to take such photos on your own I thought someone else took them for you. Incredible- thank you.
A good tri pod is a music microphone stand. Guitar center has an attachment that holds your phone.
As a photographer I am impressed with your video. There are table top tripods available as well. I use them when travelling. Well done, great information!
This is just what I needed. My photographer husband recently passed away and I wasn’t at all satisfied with the mirror pics. I knew there had to be a better option. Thanks!
OMG this is dead useful. I’m at TAFE doing my diploma so this helps with my assignments. Thank you a million times over 😁
I sell retail products online. I've tried out a few background removal apps. I have one to recommend: PhotoRoom. At this time, the icon is the letter R, on a purple background. I save my files as png (called transparent background) because it offers the widest options for further editing. You can always rerun the edited photo into a jpg, if needed, in the future.
Wow, I love that dress, who knew the skirt would look that good.
Normally I would ask my husband to do the photos, now thanks to this , I don’t have to wait for him to be there. Thank you for sharing this incredible tutorial 🌷💐🌹

Same here! Always there until you need tech help hahaha😂
Excellent idea. Just when I thought you couldn't top your last video. Keep those videos coming our way. I learn so much from them. You're an inspiration to all who sew and I anxiously wait for them to be released.
Great idea! I usually use my hubby to take my pics!
Great ideas! I take photos/video of myself for fit, or me with my family using my smartphone on a tripod with a little Bluetooth remote control to snap the photos/video. You can buy them online inexpensively. My phone holder and tripod with remote was under $30 USD.

I was thinking the same thing altho a video looks a bit more comprehensive - great channel ❤
The screenshot trick is a great one that I wish I had known when I was filming my recipes. I was stupidly doing double work: filming the process for KZread and taking out the camera from the tripod to take pictures for my blog! Evelyn, you are so helpful with everything. Thanks to you my life is never going to get boring: I have so many sewing and refashioning projects to work on now!
I've been using my camera as my best fitting tool for several years now, but I just take still shots with the timer, screen grabs aren't as easy to me. I tend to sew late at night so I use the vanity in one bathroom, which does have lights over the sink, but they don't create shadows for shirts and jackets. I place the phone on a stack of towels leaned up against the mirror - works great. I do use another spot for trouser shots during the day, but if I'm desperate for a late night shot on trousers, I take a tall table lamp (26" to 30") and remove the shade and position it on the floor. Works just fine. When posting pics online for advice, I've never found a side back or side front shot useful. Many people take a side front shot because it makes you look thinner, but it distorts the ability to judge the balance of the garment, at least to my eye. I also have a dropped shoulder, twisted elbows, and a dowagers hump, so I find it necessary to take a straight front shot, straight back shot and shots of both sides - not just one. This is especially needed when fitting a jacket. The problems I have are quite common in those of us over 60, but dropped shoulder/high hip is now common among young people that spend an incredible amount of time in front of a computer. Most of all - thank you for posting this video! Mirror selfies are almost always impossible to judge what's happening with the fit of a garment.
VERY HELPFUL!! No more crazy mirror fitting!

Exactly my thought wow wow wow!
Im binge watching your videos I have to say you are the best educator by far that I have seen ❤
So clever! I hadn't thought of doing video! Much better than trying to twist around to get the back without causing even more wrinkles! I have a tripod somewhere! So I will buy myself a phone holder. All I need now is the space!
This video couldn't have come at a better time! Just started taking fitting more seriously in my sewing projects (making adjustments to commercial patterns, making mock ups, etc) and these tips will be so useful when it comes to taking photos of my progress. Thank you!
Thanks Evelyn, I often prop up my phone on my mini ironing board on my cutting table, stood against my water bottle to get the right height! 😂
Oh My!... Evelyn you are a sewing goddess! This is a game changer when working on muslin testing . 💃💃 Thank you for time and effort to choreograph this useful video. Best tips I've seen in a decade.♥
Recording a video will be great for presenting our monthly challenges and questions about fitting at VSS. Thank you for posting a video about this subject.

I agree Edwin! Also, this tutorial will be available in VSS very soon too! I can't wait to see your video! 😀
This is so helpful. Thank you. I, too, have a Samsung phone and I never thought of making a video and taking a screenshot. Duh!!! 😜😜 It makes perfect sense. I was always depending on my fiancé for help with pictures or video. I love him, but he's really bad at taking them and wasn't always available. Now I don't have to take him away from something or, if I'm working late at night and he's asleep, wait until we're both awake.
This would also be a good technique for when my daughters in another state send me photos from the fitting room and want me to tell them how they look. Thank you.
Thank you! As a blind person this is incredible information!! Thank you again!!
H from England. This is such a helpful video, thank you for doing it.
Absolutely useful. I even have an old camera tripod (hubby's hobby). I will have to get instructions for using my phone camera but I have geeky people in my life to help with that. As always Evelyn, you do a great job explaining things.
GREAT explanation of what (and what not) to do. Thank you for this!
My (Samsung) phone allows me to make video screen grabs without having to swipe or use the physical side buttons or anything. There's a small button on the left bottom hand screen while playing it with the photo roll still open at the bottom of the screen. It looks like a play button with corners around it. This eliminates the chances of having the screenshot menu that opens up being in the next screenshot and makes timing it even easier 😊
This is a game changer. Thanks 😊
so helpful Evelyn - I didn't realise what a difference it would make taking screen shots out of a video. Game changer and your suggestion of using this for toile comparison - inspired!! Thankyou so much
You can sandwich a tablet computer between piles of heavy books,as long as it doesnt cover the lense area. Holds it nice and secure. If you go all stiff in front of a camera try doing a little dance for a minute to loosen off. My dressing gown video has some of my self selfies, mixed quality.
This is genius! Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this. it never even occured to me to use my phone as a fitting aid. I will be using it from now on.
This very helpful, thank you. Excellent tool to help with the fitting process.
Oh, wow! Sure didn't know my Samsung phone could do screenshots like that. Thank you! I used to sew all my clothes when I was in high school (many years ago) and am just getting back into it. I'm really enjoying your videos.
I thought you were going to teach how to take selfies ha ha ha ha !!!! Great idea! Thank you
Wow! What a great idea. I never would have thought of this. I will definitely do this from now on
Just tried it works 😄 thank you! Used my dress form as the tripod, fab thanks

I wish I’d seen this earlier today when I was selfie-ing my latest toile.
How very helpful. Thank you. I don’t have any one to help me with fitting. And I already have a tripod!
I loved this idea!
Thank you so much! 🍀 With my Sony the screenshot worked very well. I will try to take a video with some books and in Germany photographers call it "beanbag". A wobbly little bag you can put your camera on when the underground is too rough or something like that. Sorry für my english. I'm from Germany and I like your videos sooo much! 🍀
Evelyn, this is so so so helpful!! I have been trying to figure out how to do this. Thank you for doing this video.
saving so I can do this! Thank you
Yes as I am not good at taking selfie in an fashion. I really do appreciate this thank you.
Very helpful!! Thanks so much.
What a fantastic tutorial. I've always wanted to have pictures for fitting. I tried to get my husband to take photos, but because he didn't really know what I was looking for they never were successful. Thank you Evelyn.
Excellent. I have an ample bum, so I have to add length to the back hem. This will help me get it right. Thank you !
Screen shot for stills, proving the smart phone can outsmart a golden retriever!
Haha just what I needed. I just setup a Instagram account for the first time in almost a decade.
Fabulous tutorial 🙏
Thanks!
Such a great video! I'll have to try this out because I too am tired of mirror selfies
this is genius!🤯
I realise that I'm late to the party but if you struggle with taking screenshots of your video for stills, you can use the camera delay function. Just set up as if you were taking a regular picture (not video) with the back camera, usually at the top of the camera screen there will be icons for zoom, flash, etc. One usually looks like a clock face. Select that and you'll see you can choose 3, 5,10,15, etc. That's the delay, in seconds, that you will get between the time you press the shutter button to the time the camera takes the pic. So choose however long you think you need to get in place (10 seconds is usually plenty) and you're set! The delay also comes handy when you want to take group pics and still be in the photo too! If you count down everyone can say cheese at the same time! 😂
I have so been looking forward to this you tube video. I’m actually working on a new method to sew pants called the top down center out method. It’s a little better with 2 mirrors but this method is fantastic. I’m on vacation right now so it will be challenging to find something to use as tripod but I will. Definitely one I will review , practice,& save.
Brilliant tips Evelyn, this is life changing. Thanks
Great lessons as always! Thank you so much Evelyn!
Great tips ! I knew most of them, but learnt more ! I recently upgraded my phone to one with a better camera, and it definitely has better resolution when you zoom in . (Back camera , of course)
Thank you Evelyn. Yes, this was very helpful!
This video was a great help! Thank you xx
I never knew I could take screenshots on a video on phone! 😅
Thanks for your pics tips!👍🏻👌🏻
This was super helpful! You've convinced me to finally get a tripod instead of trying to create some precarious stack of books to set my phone on. I want to start sewing more fitted garments but I don't have a dress form, and trying to set my phone up on something is just so tedious for me I haven't taken fitting as seriously as I'd like to. Thank you so much!
Amazing I never thought of that. Thank you ❤
Life changing for my picture taking! Thanks, Evelyn. I recently got a tripod, so now I’ll experiment with the back camera. Who knew? 🤩
Great video. New subscriber from Cape Town South Africa 🇿🇦👍
Like - very helpful. The screw slot on the camera mount is usual a coin size - no driver needed. Also noticed 2 comments that may need to be edited out a 58 minutes and 1 hour back from this point
I don't use a smartphone. 🤣 I just put my tablet on a music stand, but I have terrible overhead flourescent lights. I look ghoulish, but I can see the sewing at least! 😱
Brilliant!
Thank you Evelyn! This video is sooo useful! Solves photography problems when taking them on your own. Especially those screen shots 😊👍 Missing your trift hauls...are you planning on doing a oneib the near future?
Love this . Thank you so much 🙏
Definitely helpful, thank you. My biggest problem with mirror selfies is that arm I've got out holding the phone up knocks everything out of symmetry!! Then I can't tell if the garment is uneven, if I am uneven (definitely a possibility given shoulder and vertebral injuries) or if it's just that I've got one arm up... I sent a few mirror selfies to my friend when I was trying to customize my princess seam bodice block and eventually we went with a video call where she told me where I needed to stick pins in things sand what to let in, what to let out...
What a very helpful video thank you ❤
Fantastic this was really helpful! I have wondered about this for a while now and you have really cleared up how we can get screenshots without a silly camera in the way.
That’s so helpful,fantastic tutorial 😊
Thank you so much, this has been such a huge help.
THANKS !!!!!
Great one! Thank you very much!
Brilliant
Great Video, thank you ❤
Thanks so much for sharing ! This is awesome 🙏
