    Thank you so much. I am currently trying this. What temperature do you set your heat mat to? How large do the new cuttings get in the 10-12 weeks before planting outside? I’m trying to determine how many I can start with my current grow lights. Thank you!

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    My heat mat isn't adjustable so I can't give you an exact temperature (I simply plug mine in). My cuttings typically can stay in a 4-5 inch pot until they're ready for transplant out in the garden so you should be able to fit quite a few beneath your grow lights :)

    Great video! I am in the midst of propagating as well. Hoping I can take my first cuttings in another week. Will you use your mother tuber in the ground this year? If not, how many cuttings will you take from it before discarding it?

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    Thank you! I’m so excited for you as you give dahlia cuttings a try! I generally do plant my mother tuber in the ground. The exception for me is when I start the cutting process early and end up take lots of cuttings from a single tuber. If I take 10 or more cuttings from a tuber, that’s when I choose to discard the mother tuber rather than plant it in my garden. Best of luck!

    Do you moisten the soil when you place the tubers in the pots to wake up, or you keep the soil dry to prevent rot before the tubers grow roots? Do you place dome over the cutting tray? When I use heat mat, the soil dries up so fast, so I am wondering. Thanks! Just found you on KZread, really enjoy your channel!

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    I do dampen the soil but like you mention, I’m careful not to go overboard so that the tubers don’t rot. And yes I will often use a humidity dome over my cuttings when they’re on a heat mat so they don’t dry out as fast, though it’s not a requirement.. best of luck! 💛

    Good to know we can do that. I am never sure which plants are able to be propagated. I just learned snap dragons can be also!! I have 18 dahlias coming in May. QUESTIONS... Once you cut from the tubers, how long does it take for the tuber to grow to that height again? Also how many inches away from the tuber do you place your lights? Thanks for sharing!

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    That's so exciting K J! It always takes the longest for that first sprout to form. I find that after I take my first cutting, the sprouts grow back rather quickly. While I've never clocked it, I'd guess that I'm cutting from each tuber every 7-14 days. As for the lights, I hang them so that they're an inch or two above my dahlias. I want the lights to be close but not touching. Hope this helps, best of luck to you!

    If i cut all the sprouts from a tuber, what happens to yhe tuber ? Does it die? Send out another sprout? Multiple sprouts in its place like pinching back a bigger plant? My mind is spinning! I've been told you need to cut into the tuber, and take a bit of the tuber itself with the sprout. If you don't the new plant you made will not make flowers in the second year. What's your thought? Have you experienced something like that?

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    Hmm.. interesting. To be honest, I've never heard of doing that. I've been taking cuttings from my dahlias for the past several seasons- using the same method that I shared in this video- and I've never had issues with dahlias not flowering in later years.

    How many cuttings will each dahlia tuber produce? 👩🏼‍🌾

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

    @twosistersflowerfarm

    It depends on how early you start the process. Also it depends a little bit on the variety. Some of the later season tubers take longer to ‘wake up’ so I get fewer cuttings from them. I usually get 4 or 5 per tuber when I start in January. Some seasons if I really push it I can get more like 7 or 8 💛
