i am applying for a fashion school in New York and we have to create 3 garments for the portfolio and this video had honestly helped me get a clearer picture on things. I’ve made a pant, but everything was freestyled 😂 kinda clueless on measurements, just been eyeballing everything, but I realized I need to learn to capture the exact sizes of people in order to be great. this will definitely play a really large role in what I am trying to achieve. thank you so much.

So I made a skirt and when I stand it's perfect but when I sit it's tight on my hips . I recall measuring it with one finger in . Do you recommend keeping the feet slightly apart when taking hip measurements for ease of sitting down ?

or fashion design, take your best path in school for how you're best inclined... and try a drama course or more, to help bring you out a bit.... my advice from a lifelong introvert who wishes I might have done it 🙂

If I want to buy a off the rack blouse or dress, where do I get the measurement for my size. Everything always says xs, sm, m etc. I never get it right. Do I just measure across the breast to make sure it's not too tight or do I need the under bust as well?

You can lay the garment flat, then measure: blouse, across the seams from armpit to armpit, for proper bust line fit; dress, across the armpits, possibly across waist, and at widest hip. Length of garment could matter as well, taken from at the rear from neckline down. For instance I measure 40 inch around fullest bust line and like my blouses to be a fitted measure of 19.5 to 20.5 pit to pit. You could go larger for a looser appeal but that could mean the shoulder fit is too broad or that's the look you're going for. Personally, I find if I get to know a specific brand I can generally count on them to have consistency from one item to the next. Sizing is definitely not consistent from brand to brand. Measuring under the bust is for bras or possibly a very fitted bustier style of top or dress. Hope that helps you, albeit a late offering 😃
