How To Hockey - Coach Jeremy hey jeremy im 16 and dont really have a lot of hockey experience but i really want to sign up to play ice hockey. Do you think its too late to start playing at my age? I know that a lot of players start from a young age.

Not at all. There are kids on my high school team who started last year, or the year before. They aren't very good compared to the rest of our team, and often don't dress for our games, but if you don't go into it expecting to start or anything, it can still be a lot of fun. You will certainly still get the experience, and I would absolutely recommend you do it.

Start learning with it in the middle, then try the toe. Once you learn to flex the shaft and blade you can effectively shoot right from the toe like some of the pro's do. You can also pull it in with the toe and then snap it near the middle.

Started playing hockey a just over two years ago, I've watched this video many many times to try and learn how to take a snap shot so I don't have to set myself up to take a full-on wrist shot. Took a really nice snap shot in a game last week (goalie got a piece with the back end of his stick) and the ref gave me props and said "not many people know how to take a good snap shot"!... thanks How To Hockey and Coach Jeremy!!! Your videos are awesome!

Yes the best place for this snapshot is from in close, when you need to get a quick shot off. After a lot of practice you should be able to get a powerful snapshot, however the wristshot (as shown in my other video) allows you to use more of your body and put more power into the shot vs the snapshot shown in this video.

Great video dude! One thing that has eluded me since i was a kid was a snap shot, this explained it that much better for me. Now to work on it. I've always relied on my slap shot, onetimers and wrist shots the most and if i can fix my weak snap shot, man, that would be great! From a hockey reviewer, thank you!

I might have chance to join to some club. I am 15 and i really wanted to play hockey in my Country own club. S-Kiekko. And my parents told me that i didnt say enough that i wanted to play hockey. Bauer One100's, they are good skates. I like them a lot but would only recommend them if your feet have stopped growing (too expensive to grow out of after a year!)

Hey Jeremy - another great video. I love how in depth you go by breaking it down into slow motion. However I am wondering...what camera do you use to shoot these? I ask because when you slow mo it the picture is very blurry. If you used an HD camera and filmed in 720p, you could have you slow mo's captured with up to 60 fps (frames per second) giving you that clear slow mo picture, and your viewers the clear idea you are instructing them on.

Yeah, you need to get a feel for where the puck is on the blade of your stick. The only way to do this is with practice. Eventually just by stickhandling you will know if the puck is at the toe, heel, or middle from the feel of it. Work on it off the ice by stickhandling a few times, then take a peak at your blade then look at your target and then shoot. After a while try doing it without looking at your stick first. Get used to the feel when the puck is in the middle of your blade

with the right technique any stick, but before I got a composite with the p92 curve, I couldn't get the puck off the ice, and now I'm getting the puck off the ice very easily. Also, make sure you get a stick with lots of flex, and really push the stick down into the ice when you shoot.

Hi Jeremy, How important is the accuracy in a slap shot? Or should I only focus on power and quick release because as you said I want to catch the goalie off guard....

You need to start with the blade cupping the puck, then pull it towards the net a bit, and towards your body a bit, then do the snap motion.

oh man, this 6 minute snapshot tutorial is better than my son's coach. I am living in Shanghai China, can't blame the coach as hockey is quite a new game here.

How To Hockey - Coach Jeremy same. Gotta protect the moneymaker

This will be useful for my schools hockey sticks, they have large rubber ends and thin, hollow plastic for a shaft.

One way to call the snap-shot is "mini" slap-shot...because my slap shot technique is identical to your description except without the wind-up....

Nobody takes a snap or wrist shot standing in one spot. Would've been better if you showed us the positioning while moving.

Maybe it doesn't happen as often, but there's plenty of situations where you will take them while stationary. Like if you have the puck at the point and you need to get it off quick, or if your get a pass in the slot but it's a bit off so you can't one-time it.

If youre trying to dangle around defenders and need to get a shot off quick snapshots are ideal even stationary you cant slapshot every time youre stationary

it's really a personal preference, I shoot heel to toe, but I have a few buds who shoot just toe or heel.

I coach mites and 95% of the team couldn’t do a wrist shot so I had them stand in front of the net and snap it at the cross bar. Kids figured that out and now applying it to the wrist shot.

Jeremy I had a question, I notice when some players shoot, right before the puck is shot there is a snapping sound, probably from the flex of the stick. I've been trying to get that "pop" but since your stick is on the puck for the snapshot I'm unable to do it. Any tips?

+SardineCanSuccess Think of the shot as more of a super condensed slap shot. It will help your release and snap if you dont bring the puck back with you, but instead flex the stick and then make contact with the puck. Its hard to describe

+eulenspeigel Actually ive tried that and it worked but the issue im having is how to snap the puck on a snapshot, i just kind of seem to throw it and not snap the puck. since its a snapshot my stick is always touching the puck so i cant snap it.

+SardineCanSuccess hey what you do is sort of combine snapshot and wristshot. you pull the puck forward like a wrist shot and the puck should leave your stick for a split second. then snap putting your weight in the stick and it should be a harder shot. you should also hear the snapping sound

+SardineCanSuccess The way you od it is you shoot kinda like a mid Slapshot. You make contact with the ice before the puck. The contact with the ice creates that snap as well as begin flexing your stick so it catches the puck an sends it flying. The best place to make contact is like an inch or 2 away from the puck

It's never too old to start, and if you're committed enough you should be able to pick it up quite easily. As long as you don't get discouraged you'll be flying with the other skaters in no time.

I started playing last week and I'm in my 20s. The key is to not feel embarrassed about being a beginner. I went out 4 days in a row and I've already improved a lot. Just watch out for that lace bite! If you aren't used to wearing skates and you are trying to powerskate, you could cause some major pain to your ankle tendon if you overdue it. Good luck!
