ABOUT: How To Take A Manual Blood Pressure
Hi Team!
Did you ever find something really confusing and hard to grasp when you went to Nursing school (or if you're in Nursing school right now)?
Well, for me that thing was taking manual blood pressure!
I just couldn't, first of all, wrap my head around what SYSTOLIC and DIASTOLIC even meant and why a too high too low bp was bad and then what I was actually listening for when taking it!
Taking manual blood pressure is a vital basic Nursing skill and one you should learn how to do well!
These days there are a lot of automatic machines but even they can't be trusted all the time! I actually prefer to take all my blood pressures manually, that way I know I'm getting an accurate reading.
I have put together a video on how to take manual blood pressure and then I have put that information to the test and gotten my husband (who is a non-medical person whatsoever) to demonstrate it to me
Teaching Chris How To Take A Manual Blood Pressure Video

I also found this great article really explaining systolic and diastolic blood pressure really well.

I hope that it may be of value to you

@@NurseJenny Hello Jenny, "Whenever I check my blood pressure on an aneroid manual BP apparatus, the first reading always comes out high between (130-140/70-80). Then within minutes, the second reading comes out low between (120-130/70-75), and then the average remains the same at 120-130 systolic. Can you tell me the reason for this and why it happens?"
I started a new job today and haven’t done manual BP since school 9 years ago 😩😩you saveddd me lol ☺️☺️❤️

Thank you for clearly demonstrating where the brachial and radial arteries are. I'm trying to re-learn how to take a manual blood pressure, so I can monitor my and my wife's BPs during the quarantine, and tell our PCP. I was an EMT, once--35 years ago!--so a good instructional video is just what I needed.

I’m in EMT Academy and this helped me so much. I feel more prepared for my lab skills tomorrow, thank you!
Finally! I'm able to figure out exactly how to find that brachial artery! Thank you for explaining!
I just got my sphygmomanometer today and I have no clue how to use it. I wanna monitor me and my mom's bp so I bought it. Not even the manual on the kit helps. So thank you for this amazing video. Easy to understand and follow. Big help to those who are clueless about medical stuff like me😅
Thank you for showing how to find the brachial artery. I am a student taking an LVN program and was struggling with taking manual bp measurement for the first time. With your video I was able to figure it out.

Thank you so much for this video , it's really helps me.i have been asking some nurses where am currently doing my Pratikum but nobody is willing to help me but with this I will try it out on Monday at work
oh GOD, Jenny where have you been, a new subscriber here, thank you so very much, thank you, I am a student and I have been struggling with blood measurement techniques, weuuu now have one week in practice, thanks for coming in. On Monday I will be dancing to the patient's room to measure blood pressure. thanks so so very much Jenny
This was a great video and super easy to learn from for a novice! Ty!😊
Thanks. It was really helpful and simple!!
THANK YOU. Out of all the videos I’ve watched on how to do this you are the first to discuss the initial “whoosh” (systolic) sound and initial needle ticks…I thought my systolic was when the initial needle bumps happened. Great job. ✊

Tha k you for the video. I always freak out on the digital monitors that induce more anxiety and bumps up the BP. I had never been able to feel relaxed with the digital monitors. Looks like this is the way for me to measure the BP. I can definitely take the fear off! Will try the manual monitor!
This was very helpful for me currently working at a clinic doing my phlebotomy but also having to do manual bp
Very good explanation thank you!! Cheers to EMT school next week!!

Hi, Jenny, This is nice demo for measuring the BP without Stethoscope. After seeing your video, I went and bought a sphygmomanometer and a cheap stethoscope. Your instruction is wonderful and to the target for understanding . Now I could see my and family members BP at home without difficultly. Your other video on the sphygmomanometer was also wonderful piece of your teaching. ( I am not connected to medical profession other than the purpose of being a patient.) . Thank you.

BEST guide for finding brachial artery... which not found elsewhere. And needed. Home blood monitor says "align white marker on the cuff over the brachial artery on the inside of the arm." Triggered an. internet search on how to locate the brachial artery. Plus watched several KZread videos. Still not clear. Yours was the first that provided Clear Directions I can confidently follow. A big deal since felt like raised my blood pressure trying to locate this fundamental information (even if not the case). Can say it was very anxiety-producing not knowing where to accurately place the cuff. A huge relief after watching your video. Thank you thank you thank you!!! UPDATE Just applied your directions and took my own blood pressure with calm confidence. WOW! Truly your info is a life-saver!

It can be so tricky Destiny! Make sure you’re wearing the stethoscope the right way with the ear tips pointing forward and not backwards. Also palpate the brachial pulse and once you feel it that’s where you put your stethoscope. Keep going, practice makes perfect. We all thought blood pressure were tricky in the beginning so don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it! 😊👍🙏🙌

Okay here's the mistake (very novice mistake) that I've been doing.. I was listening to the artery with the bell off! No wonder I didn't hear the tapping and the swoosh. Also remember you can feel the brachial artery bounding 2 cms MEDIAL to the biceps tendon, 2 cms above the fossa.. but you can't hear it. Unobstructed flow doesn't create any sounds. Only with the deflating it produces the sound.
Great explanation, dear friend. Thank you.
