Well, all the way over the other side of the planet (the antipodes), believe it or not I have come across your videos. Oh the nostalgia. My dads first car was a standard 8 in the 50's. Traveled quite widely around Victoria but alas, my parents wished to venture more widely, into the outback. So the 8 was replaced..........with a 50's standard vanguard van. Neither went anywhere rapidly, but did so very reliably. Anyhoo, I'm impressed with your content (weather's rubbish) and your knowledge. I took great pride as a kid at being the most knowledgeable in my school on 50's and 60's vehicles. Unfortunately my children think my knowledge is quaint (code for boring/laughable). Keep up the impressive video's, you should be proud of your productions.

Hi. I'm viewing this late. The Rover 3500 is very nice in the blue color. I remember them being released back in the 1970s, and thinking what an ugly design . It was so different from its predecessor. My father drove a Rover 2000 in the 70s. But now I think they look good. Here in New Zealand we didn't have the Ford Granadas on our car market , the reason being the Australian Ford Falcon and Fairmonts were being sold. I like the 1970s Ford Granada , it is a nice sleek looking vechile. Your trusty Standard 8 didn't let you down Harley.

An entertaining video HJ, I couldn't be bothered with the faff with the Standard. It will not be to long before you will be driving it to the shows yourself, time flies but probably not fast enough for you. I have said it before you are developing your own style which is refreshingly natural, relaxed, entertaining as well as being knowledgeable and demonstrates a high degree of maturity . Definitely not a good day for a car show. Keep the videos coming. MX 5 needs new wiper blades methinks.

However, though it may be the editing I thought you were a tad brutal on starting the 8 by revving rather than letting the oil get round the engine and the rattly tappets that certainly could do with adjustment. But she sounded healthy enough and got you there and back despite the weather and your cunning move to the warm MX5 for the return leaving dad to endure the cold. Lol! A good Sunday morning classic boost. Thanks, Harley and Dad.

Ah yes some editing trickery there perhaps, we did leave it running for a bit to warm up but didn't make for a particularly exciting bit of the video! Sometimes though it needs a few revs to keep going, all these cars are different :)

great video Harley, well done. Like the starting procedure, should do one on the Pilot. The Triumph Estate was a great looking car and the Pop looked good too. MX5 sounds like it needs new wiper blades.

Great video! My first car was a 1956 Standard 8 Family, but it didn’t have that grill. I wrote it off after 6 weeks, I still have the keys. I now have a GT6.

Great video. The starting of the Standard was a slightly mickey-taking yet affectionate view of the reality of owning an old car. I admire you and the Pop owner for venturing out in those conditions. I'm afraid both my Eunos and my Wolseley stay where they are when the weather's like that. Is that the last Crewe meet or does it run all year?

Oh boy do I remember the quirks of starting a 1950s British vehicle! Having owned an A30, an A35 and an A55 (Mark 1), I got well used to the needs of each - without which, they refused to start until a fair amount of drama was performed. With the A30, you pulled the choke all the way out in winter and half way out in summer. The A35 was a half-choke summer OR winter and the A55 was choke all the way out, then in about half a centimetre before two pumps on the throttle and a pull of the starter. If any of the three had sat for a week or more (usually fairly rare), the first job was to manually prime the fuel system with the lever on the bottom of the fuel pump. The A55 had a battery that just died on me one afternoon for no apparent reason - I had ignition lights and the starter would whirr but not fast enough to engage. Fortunately I had the crank handle and one whip round after the mandatory choke pull and throttle pumping got her started. Unfortunately, I worked shift work at the time and I could not get to the local parts store to get a battery until I changed to the next shift pattern a week later, so would be out in the car park at 3am with the crank handle at the end of each shift! Marvellous old beast though...... When it comes time to replace the Std8's engine, it would depend on whether you were going to be driving it, Harley. Problem being that (although I am not certain of the laws over in the UK) it may be considered a "modified" vehicle if anything larger than the original 803 was in situ and, if so, the insurance may not cover a Learner / Provisional driver. It seems silly to me when talking about such a small-cc rated engine swap, but the laws here in NZ are that draconic. They get snippy if you drop a 1275cc engine in a Mini that originally came with a 998cc or 1098cc unit - even though it is a direct drop-in and other Minis came with that engine as standard. Their way of looking at it is this: that PARTICULAR Mini never came with one from factory, so you need to get it certified and the insurance companies consider it a modified vehicle. Putting that aside, I do not know the cost of second-hand engines in the UK, but a Herald engine may be cheaper and easier to find. The difference between the Spit and the Herald engine is the Spit has a slightly higher compression, bigger valves and a slightly tweaked cam. However, as the 803 powers the old girl along quite well, the sheer fact of chucking an 1147cc engine in her would make the beast quite peppy by comparison to current....and if you can, try and find one from a 12/50 as it got a tweak from the standard (no pun intended) 1147 and produced 48HP instead of 39. Going the "big block" 1296cc out of the 13/60 would give you more future modification benefit and a more tuneable engine, but I'd be looking to change the drums over to disks on the front of the Standard 8 if I were dropping one in. The Spit had twin carbs that do indeed fit a Herald engine and getting a cam ground to a modest performance spec (without it having the lumpy idle that attracts undesirable attention from Police officers) along with fitting bigger valves etc are mods that are all easily doable to make the engine run like a Spitfire's would and will all depend on the depth of the wallet being proffered to fund the exercise. An 1147 can also be similarly tweaked, but as mentioned, I reckon she'd power the little Standard along with enough vigour without being modified.....at least to begin with! I love the way the Standard looks as she's pootling along the road too. Such an elegant little car in its simplicity and shape. That yellow the '77 Spitfire was wearing (similar to the Mazda's) is called Inca Yellow. It is a more rich and warm tone than Mimosa Yellow, which has a touch of green in it and was very popular on Stags of the period. Loved that old Ford Popular and thought it was marvellous to see one in (mostly) original fettle as a lot of them over here got modified to heck in the 60s and 70s and now run everything from a modest Cortina 1500 engine to a 454 cubic inch Chevrolet engine! I honestly don't recall when I last saw an unmodified Pop! Anyway, thanks to you and your Venerable Assistant (who is probably my age or younger!) for putting up with the inclement weather to bring us the video. All the best

@@richardsealey3626 I know it has - and for modern cars it's fine. For very old cars there is a question mark though. You'll see from my thumbnail picture the car I'm referring to - Mazda themselves specifically don't recommend the use of E10 in mk1 MX5s so I was enquiring how they were getting on putting it in their MX5 which is only a year younger than mine.

Yes I agree, but it is surprising the number of old cars that can run on it with no problems. Ethanol , as stated, has been available in petrol since the 1930's. Some Chinese produced MG's cannot run on E10.... @@OldCarsNewVan

Took my 1932 Morris Minor Two-seater to a monthly car meeting at The Waggon & Horses on the Stourbridge Road, north of Kidderminster, this morning. Was very damp and cold but fairly well attended (sadly mostly modern stuff 1980s-2010s). The little Morris was the oldest vehicle there by some considerable margin. Don't think there was another pre-war vehicle there.

We towed it out recently, haven't tried getting it running but it's a reliable old thing so wouldn't take much(!)

That Standard 8 is exactly my age but I'm a darn sight better at getting out of bed in't morning.

That Standard sounds a bit rattly.

Yep we did adjust the tappets a while ago and I believe we also changed the rocker assembly so not exactly sure what's going on - might need a new head altogether!

@@CarTractionvids Cam followers when i was in the trade engine builder always replaced them camshaft was usually ok.

It would have been so much easier to start it with a can of easy start
