I've heard that doing a pick scrape or some random (but loud) percussive sound in the beginning of the recording helps serve as a marker for where to sync the audio and the video! Super helpful, man. This was great.

Gimme that Arch Enemy shirt!!! Great tips. I've got like 6 years experience syncing audio and video from my old gaming channel, so it's pretty easy for me to sync guitar videos at this point. Just need to focus on performing better lol. Also, I don't consider it cheating if you are playing along with your own recording. That's what bands have been doing in music videos for years.

Ah man, thank you for this, exactly what I was looking for! Kind of amazing you dropped it right in without having to muck with it, but one tip for that I've seen -- slap your hands together just before starting to play. Eh, who knows, it might be just as tough to sync that. Also, fantastic tip on boosting the level first, that always causes trouble for me. OK so one question -- do you turn up the level on your audio interface past the point of clipping, or how did you know how much to boost? It looked like your guitar recording was clipping in the DAW (I also use Studio One), but I never heard any clipping sounds. Great video, and I LOVE that guitar tone.
@jasonstallworth
3 жыл бұрын
I just keep my DAW at the normal level I have it at when recording. But I do crank the volume going to my monitors so that way the camera picks it up well, which makes syncing much easier (I don't have to clap) Oh, I'm also letting everyone know about my new metal rhythm guitar course here. People are digging it so far: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/

Thank you and glad this helps! Yeah, you could record it first so that you can focus on that part and then go back and film yourself playing along and sync the two. Sometimes that makes it easier rather than doing it at once, screwing up, and having to redo it several times! lol

This helped me so much Jason! Love your channel and your helpful videos. I play through a Kemper. On the Kemper I have the usb into my Imac running Studio One. I use SpidF from my Kemper into my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. I have a couple Mackie monitors into the Scarlett. I am new to recording and my main issue is getting the levels set up correctly. I have been having spikes but just discovered I need to lower the volume on my Kemper to bring down the levels and stop the spiking. I know DUH! :) It still seems like with different profiles I have to tweak my monitor levels up or down though. I want to try messing around with using some amp sims for fun. Do you know how I can bypass my Kemper and use some of the Studio One sims? For instance, I want to record a track and be able to change the tone rather than recording with a set tone that I can't change. I tried dragging the Ampfire sim onto my track but it still records whatever Kemper profile I have loaded up. Thanks for any help!
@jasonstallworth
2 жыл бұрын
Dude, I've never used the Kemper before. For me, I prefer to keep things extremely simple, either using just one thing or another. I think in your case, if you recorded the track with a plugin, you can always take that plugin out of the track to have the dry signal and possibly reamp with the Kemper, but I'm not sure how all of that works (too complex for me! lol)

Try this if you want to play quietly. Since you are going to cut the beginning of the video anyway, start with your monitors on, play just one or two clean notes to make a spike in the waveform to sync to, then you can turn off your monitors for the rest of your playing. Once you are in sync you can trim off those extra notes. It's nice if the camera can see your pick hitting the string, too.
@jasonstallworth
5 ай бұрын
Yeah the pick hitting does help line it up!
Music is actually pretty easy to sync if it has a clear rhythm to it, someone talking however, is kind of tricky. In Final Cut X there is a sync function you can use and if the audio has a clear beat it works great.

If you press record on the video and audio then tap your strings four times you get 4 little spikes in the waveform. Just zoom in a bit on your video editor and drag one along thill they align. No messing about to see if you got it right. Zoom in to the smallest increment and you cant go wrong. You can buy me a beer! ;-)
