FRED I am a Professional Painter, Artist and Photographer, and have been painting for 50 years an have painted everything from Cars, Planes, Race Cars, Motorcycles, Boats etc, and find your tutorial very good for a beginner or a pro that has never tried this before. Thanks! looking to see more of your work…

well, I followed his instructions to the letter, twice, and it doesn't work. The paint stiffens up on the surface of the water and sticks to the stir-stick when you go to swirl it. Either his instructions are incomplete and he did something with his that he isn't telling us or he just full of shit. Take your pick, he a poor instructor.

@@d.a.mac.6619 it happened to me and couldnt figure what the problem was. Then i realized i was using the wrong paint. I switched to oil based paint and it worked. Also this is one of the most complete tutorials you can find.

@@jmanuelzapata8928 That makes sense. Only thing is I used the same Humbrol Gloss paint that he used in the video, only blue instead of orange, so it should have worked. I eventually got it done as well and it turned out really cool, I just had to do it a little different than how he shows. I'm glad it's done and I'll never have to do it again lol. I messed with it for 2 whole days and even lost a night of sleep because of it. Thankfully I had 2 enclosures to work with so I good dip with one while primer was drying on the other. Lol I must have cleaned them and dunked those things at least 5 times haha

@@d.a.mac.6619 that's great and I'm glad it worked out well. It's actually my first time doing it and I still have a problem. As soon as I pull it out of the water the pain starts dripping and everything becomes a brownish mess. Any ideas on how to prevent it to drip the paint? Thanks man.

@@jmanuelzapata8928 I didn't have that problem until I tried it with some acrylic enamels, which makes sense because they are water based lol. Those acrylic paints just made an ugly mess and didn't stick to the enclosure at all. With the Humbrol paints the paint stuck to anything that touched it, including the stir stick, so when I pulled the mod out the paint was total stuck to the enclosure. I packed the enclosure with plastic because I was afraid that it would fill with water and then when I pulled it up the water running out would mess up the paint, but the water seemed to just bead off of it. I used 4 different colors and they all stayed apart from each other (meaning they didn't blend together too much). It created a sort of film on the top of the water as each drop spread out, pretty much like in the video so I'm not sure what could be causing the paints to blend when you're doing it. One thing I figured out with the Humbrol paint is that they are not all thin enough to spread on top of the water. Even though he says in the video that you don't need to thin it, that isn't always true. Only Gloss paint works for that method and the matte or satin paints actually start to set up on top of the water and they won't swirl. The blue and green paints will just sink to the bottom in a big glob, but by adding thinner or mineral spirits to it you can make it float and spread out. The only other thing I can think of is the primer. Are you using the same primer that he is using? Not sure if it makes much of a difference but that stuff used in the video is a blend of paint and primer which makes it different that a regular old primer. I coats more like a paint and the finish is as good as if it had been primed and painted separately. Maybe that makes the swirl paint stick to it better? After I failed the first couple times I rummaged around and grabbed a bunch of jars and glass bottles to use as testers. I primed them all up and used those as testers. It helped me figure out the timing and how the paint would react during the dip and pulling it out. I went through several testers like that. The Humbrol paint goes a really long way despite being so small. I was also going to try some Model Master paints that I have but those are so much harder to work with because of its consistency and they need to be thinned quite a bit. That's pretty much all I have figured out regarding the paint. I just had to keep trying until I found a way that worked. Maybe try more borax? I think that's the component that keeps the paints from blending together, so maybe you need more of it. I had also seen a video of someone using spray paint in a similar fashion to get a similar effect. Maybe try that. Sorry it hasn't been working out for you. I know how frustrating it is.
I have gone through a million videos and all either bored me with in the first 3 seconds or didn't even say anything of how to do it so THANK YOU for being the only interesting one that didn't make me fall asleep and told me what I needed to know :-)
This is NO DOUBT the best tutorial on how to swirl paint I've ever found. GREAT VID, GREAT EXPLANATIONS, Thank You.
You should take a bow!!!!! You have the best demo on hydro painting I have seen on the web as of yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You took your time to actually EXPLAIN what each item or product was for and how it will affect the finished routine! Man, you are a life save!!!! I want to try and hydro paint some 3 d chrome pieces for a car and you helped me greatly! Thanks
You filled in a lot of blanks that other videos didn’t. By far the best tutorial on swirl painting I’ve seen. Thanks.
this was the best hydro dipping tutorial I have found. thank you for the great lesson and I can't wait to get started.
Thank you! Threw the maze that is KZread, I happened upon your video. I couldn't be a happier artist! I've always wanted to know how this was done and your video was clear and easy to understand. thanks again!
I've been watching videos for 3 weeks, practicing, and the paint goes straight to the bottom. Now in 10 minutes of your video everything is crystal clear and i'm so confident it will be a success that i'm going to do my and my daughter's motorcycle helmets. My family has already a painter she specializes in acrylic paint and other things but she has never seen anything like this, I know because of her being near 90, so I'm going to build a nice wood or plastic piece of art for her and I'm going to dip it using this way :). I'll post it here for sure.
Alright, Fred, you just blew my mind. I do swirls with my homemade soap, but this is a completely different technique. And holy cow, the finished product is STUNNING! Nice work! (I look forward to watching your how-to DIY box mods) Take care!
Great job. You definitely have the best swirl paint video on KZread. Very well done. Thank you for posting this.
im happy just watching the paint in the bucket👍😀

The most easiest tutorial and clear explanation that i ever heard ,thank you Fred Yen
love your videos Fred. you have a great attention for detail with clear directions. keep up the great projects man.
omg FINALLY a tutorial to achieve this look that actually works! thank you! all the other tutorials use stuff like alum or other stuff that I don't want to go out and buy. I have been searching Google all week and have tried out 3 methods that failed. thank u so much, and your results looked super nice.
Wow! The first video I watched (besides those who choose to use spray paint) where the instructor actually informs us if what kind of paint and other additives were used! 👍👍👍
Thank you! I want to do this with flower pots. Yours is the best tutorial! Your end result was stunning!
You are a fabulous teacher. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge you have shared with me!

Brad Angove It's extremely important, actually... as is having the borax (for this method anyway) Hope you got it figured out, but if not..... (& am mentioning.... for anyone watching this who may also be having trouble) ---> I know there are a LOT of videos & tutorials here on KZread.. for "marbling", as it applies to nail-art. (using fingernail polish) A little different perhaps, but not really - their method is nearly identical, so...... was just thinking perhaps watching a few, since it's SO popular & there are SO many, .... might help some & could probably offer additional tips/tricks you may not have thought of, or tried yet. Best of luck! :)

That's a good suggestion. As it so happens, I've already watched a few of those to try and get idea. Have you heard of Ebru art? It's pretty much the same thing as well except that they thicken up the water with some sort of gum and use water based paints. It's pretty cool.
Great tutorial, good job man
Easy to understand and very informative! Thank you.
Nice demo. Thanks.
Hi.Thanks a lot for the "how to", your explaination is clear and sure I will try it as possible at home.Chris from France.

Carlos Villalpando I think there is more to this. I keep running into the exact same problem... Maybe I need to thin the paint. But how much? And do different colors need thinned out more than others? And that might not even be right lol... I think these guys really own craft stores and tell you, "this can be a fun DIY project," so you spend $100-200 on stupid arts and crafts
Nice job, Fred -- thank you
thanks for keeping it short and to the point.great video.

Was that Dean Swirls video? If so I agree, puts directions but not the important stuff. I love people that are either so Ego filled or live in fear of sharing with other artists. Kinda said. What did you find was the best paint? I'm thinking about using acrylic with flow medium instead of enamel. Or maybe oil based paint, I'm even tempted to try some alcohol inks. But might get a high evaporation from water temp.
thanks dude, great video
