The professor at VA Tech didn’t fight in WW2, but was in a Nazi labor camp, he was a holocaust survivor and his name was Liviu Librescu. We as Americans need to be better and remember men such as this.

You are 10 times more likely to be struck by lightening than to experience/fall victim to, a mass shooting. And unless you are very unlucky, when a shooting breaks out, you are even less likely to be the first hit. That said, you should arm yourself and be fully capable both mentally and physically to employ your weapon. There's an age old saying, "smooth is fast". If you're in say, WalMart, and a shooting starts, first take cover (or concealment) draw and calmly line up your shot. Don't stop firing until the threat is neutralized, even if down. Look and assess to make sure the shooter doesn't have a buddy-shooter. Then immediately re-conceal your weapon and call 911 and report that you engaged the shooter, give a full description of yourself so cops don't kill you when they arrive. Beware as well that some well-intentioned idiot near you might mistake you for the shooter so call out loud "shooter is down" several times. After the shooter, the next biggest threat to you is another armed citizen mistaking you for the shooter, or responding law enforcement.

I did an active shooter training scenario 2 months and your advice would have resulted in me getting killed. I've done other scenarios where parts would have been helpful. Bottom line, there is no script for dealing with an active shooter. Sometimes your best weapon is good cover. Other times it is medical. Other times it is a firearm. Train for everything and be flexible. The mind is the final weapon. All else is supplemental.

Mike and Andy, here is more about Run/Hide/Fight. It wasn’t even a formal term for active threat response in 2007 when the Virginia Tech attack happened. The term RHF was trademarked by the city of Houston and the FBI publicly released their first video with the city of Houston in 2013. The pushback was that the training video glorified the threat and in 2020 the FBI released another RHF video that doesn’t show the threat but shows the targeted victims in a bar/restaurant. Now it has become the most common option based response term for organizations to teach to respond to an immediate hostile threat. I don’t love it either (I created and teach the acronym “LEAD” Lock/Escape/Alert/Defend. We call it LEAD Tactics). You guys should know this with all the Green on Blue attacks from 2010-2012. The military put out a active shooter/insider threat program and taught for military personnel and DOD civilians deploying to an OCONUS environment to learn in Escape-Barricade-Fight training. RHF was based off that. During the 2007 Virginia Tech incident they were just starting to teach lockdown drills to K-12 schools. Most of the students enrolled at colleges at that time were only taught fire drills and weren’t even taught anything about an immediate hostile threat drill because they started nationally around 2004. The term I challenge you to understand is how LOCKDOWN is still the major term used for an immediate hostile threat situation in our schools. Also, how only 43 states in our country require their K-12 schools to do crisis response drills by code. The reason for our K-12 schools to do these drills is that once our youth leave those 13 years of education, if they go to college they usually have no formal training for crisis response and at best they get a notification on their email account, “there is an incident on campus considering sheltering or Run/Hide/Fight” or whatever term they use

Brothers thanks for what you’re trying to do. I want to clarify one point though because it’s important we get the facts right when taking the responsibility of commenting on all of these issues. The worst/greatest casualty mass shooting was not perpetrated with handguns. In fact semi automatic, AR style rifles were used in the Mandalay Bay hotel concert shooting that inflicted the greatest number of casualties. Only making the correction because I think it’s important to have our facts straight when framing these discussions. Take care, God bless.

That was a failed hit job with multiple shooters that was covered completely false and has been deleted from MSM memory. Saudi Prince Bin Salmon was the rumored target. The dispatch calls all report multiple shooters. Eye witnesses in Las Vegas on and off the strip reported multiple shooters in multiple hotels and the massacre/terror attack that occurred that night named 1 lone gunman as the scapegoat. Reality is far far far away from the BS reporting as the official story. AR-15s maybe. Fully auto ARs sound different from the audio I heard. Just a guy here with a different perspective. Did people get shot? It's really bizarre the MSM has complete amnesia on the Vegas shootings. Thanks for the comment

The baseline issue as I see it is that a vast majority of those living in western, first world nations don't ever consider the possibility of being caught up in a disaster/ conflict scenario. Every time a " mass " shooting occurs, the same response is seen among the general public. Shock, grief, and an outpouring of sympathy. Followed by the increasingly predictable " somebody should do something " outcries that never seem to involve the individual call to action. People refuse to accept that they are responsible for their own safety and well being. They don't want to think about having to act for themselves, someone else must take care of the dirty work. That which has become abundantly clear to myself and those in my immediate circle is that each of us is our own first responder. Thinking about what could happen and taking steps to actively respond to dangerous conditions is the first order of business.

simple rule to follow in life, especially as it pertains to mass shootings: whatever the government advises you to do, or prohibits you from doing, ignore it and use your own best judgement. admonishments from 100 bureaucrats and paid experts is worth less than 5 minutes of independent thought. also for christ's sake, stop sticking around after the shooting. if they identify you, turn yourself in, if not, even better. when there's unequal enforcement of the law, and capricious punishment for excercising your rights, you'd be a fool to trust the legal process.

Situational awareness is always the #1 go-to. Concealed carry is good but not always applicable. If you're going to carry a gun, carry an individual first aid kit as well. If you need one, you're going to damned sure need the other when the shooting stops.

2:42 "AR...stands for Armalite Rifle" Respectfully, Andy: you're close, but incorrect. "AR-" is the designation for *any* Armalite firearm in their catalog, be it shotgun, pistol, or rifle. "AR" is merely shorthand for "Armalite." It's a minor detail, but one which even the staunchest pro-gun advocates get wrong.

Agree that run hide fight is, at least in part, a terrible strategy. Likely the best course of action is run if you can safely do so and, if not, get into a place that you can fight like your life depended on it because it probably does.

  • @ffryan

It depends on the situation. I don't expect a mother out for ice cream with his 3 year old to be pursuing the shooter through a mall. Sometimes run and hide is your best option. Every situation is different and your best option one moment could be a terrible option 20 seconds later. Stay flexible.

I know the best way to survive an active shooter, reasonable gun regulation, that closes the Gun Show loop hole, as any individual that wants to buy a gun displayed at a Gun Show, simply files out the background check, pays for the firearm, and after being cleared of domestic violence and other issues. The buyer than tells the seller a local Federal Firearms Licensed dealer or store and the seller ships the firearm to their local dealer and picks up the firearm, just as simple as that. Anyone that needs a firearm immediately has a 90% chance they are about to commit some sort of crime activity. Also there needs to be a clear distinction between three major categories of rifles. One is a hunting rifle, mostly bolt action, the second is a precision rifle that sharp shooters and enthusiasts shoot for competition, the third is any rifle that was specifically designed as a weapon of war to kill other human beings. As a Retired Gunner’s Mate in the Navy, most semiautomatic rifles can be easily converted to full automatic by filing a single component down just a few millimeters allows the firearm to bypass the mechanism that prevents full automatic firing. Lastly, restart and promote gun safety classes as the NRA proudly supported up u til the 1980’s for young hunters and for sport shooting at gun clubs and ranges. This idea that the 2nd amendment is for the ability of citizens if the government becomes corrupt to overthrow the government by use of firearms, which was possible until the development of Attach Helicopters, Tanks, and various rocket systems, besides the most important factor, Nuclear Weapons, no group of “Good ‘Ole Boys” are going to overthrow the existing government with a few assault rifles. Of the 2nd Amendment is absolute and no restrictions are Constitutional than any citizen should be able to own and maintain a nuclear weapon, as the warhead is uses the same principles as a firearm, it uses a conventional explosive just like gun powder to compress and build pressure in a specifically designed sphere then the fission detonation send a mass down a barrel type chamber to then fuse deuterium, and tritium. Into helium for the Hydrogen Bomb. So in principle a fusion warhead is just an extremely powerful firearm, so therefore every citizen should be able to own and use a nuclear weapon anytime they feel, otherwise the same principle that prevents citizens from actually acquiring a nuclear weapon because the founding fathers never thought to restrict this type of firearm, no different than any assault rifle that has a rate of fire of several hundred rounds per minute. So back in 1776 they never imagined that a single person could murder an entire town in a single minute. Even the 1st Amendment has restrictions, you cannot yell fire in an auditorium when in fact there is no fire, as if anyone his killed you are held criminally responsible for their death or injury. Also, as George Carlin stated, “Rights are only a cute suggestion to pacify the population, and his example was the interment of the Japanese Americans that was born in the United States and we’re outstanding citizens and yet their rights were completely violated just because actual true Japanese citizens of Japan accidentally bombed Pearl Harbor before the Japanese Ambassador filed the Declaration of War Officially before the first bombs struck the Naval Forces of the Pacific. The was due to the Ambassadors Secretary was poor at typing and took hours to officially type of the Declaration of War from Japan against the United States. So, if the Declaration was provided to the government of the United States before the bombing of Pearl, there would have been no extreme outrage against the Japanese and the United States may have not entered World War II before the NAZI’s had completely defeated Great Britain and we could not have supported a beach landing to open the Western Front that pinched Germany between the Soviet Union’s Armies and the Allies.
