Lots of helpful tips in here. A couple things I’d add, that were not mentioned. 1. Barrel riding is all about confidence(like all things in surfing). If you think you’re gonna fall you will. If you tell yourself you’re going to make it, it’s much more likely you will. Because barrels can be intimidating at first confidently pulling in is all the more important. 2. Keep your eyes open as long as possible. 3. Your average head high to bit over beach break barrel isn’t going to slam you too hard even if you do everything wrong. You can handle the wipe out, so go for it. 4. Be prepared to “waste” a lot of waves looking for barrels. Lots of times when you’re learning what to look for you’ll crouch and get in your barrel riding stance the wave will do nothing. You’ll realize you just wasted a perfect section to rip a nice turn. Don’t worry about it, and keep “pulling in” because even if the wave doesn’t barrel those are valuable reps for muscle memory on what to do. And eventually one of those sections will throw and you’ll be in there.

Wow this was so good. As a guy that surfs beach breaks 99% of time. Barrels pop up once in blue moon, very helpful.

Such good tips Noel! It amazes me how it long its taken me to find someone say this. It doesn't barrel consistently where I live, i find myself getting clamped in the barrel heaps, so these tips I'm sure will help me. Cheers (also going to subscribe)

This was really helpful! I have such a ugly barrel stance due to lack of barreling waves lol I always bend at the waist plus I’m 6ft tall which make for some ugly pics!! Feels like the wall technique helped instantly ! I’ll get to practice my stance soon on the Waco wedge! Thanks for the tips !

An little off topic, Been riding 2+1 MR’s fcs2 in an D2 absolutely love it going front side. Back side been harder to dial in . My ? Is going backside on 2 +1 or twin going back side more of an learning curve?

It can be… backside it’s a little harder to keep the traction or tail from sliding out on turns. A good tip is stand a little closer to your heel side rail for extra hold through bottom turns.

Couple comments: move forward on board- back foot can typically end up in front of pad. THIS adds stability and control/able to make micro adjustments in the barrel. This will also help float over the foam ball/tail won’t wash out. Watch vids of the pros- you’ll see them do this, then shuffle back after exiting the barrel to do turns. Go watch Brett Barley from NC videos on tube riding. He has a couple excellent ones. No offense meant but you really should not be giving advice on tube riding.
