The home I purchased they lady for some reason literally kept all the breakers turned off she said she done it to save money and would turn them on when needed to use etc. However I’m not believing that there is times I smell strange smells then smell strong electrical smells. The dryer when I go to change the lint it’s up top but when you go to pull it out to change it almost all of it falls down inside of it I have tried been more gentle when pulling it out but at least half of it still falls down in it. My dryer doesn’t dry clothes on first go it takes multiple cycles but the thing is it gets extremely hot even to the touch. Any advice?

@@mildredmorine745 okay thanks I have gotten some of the outside part cleaned but haven’t gotten to the inside I know there as to be more. Yesterday the load of laundry took 5 cycles to even get decently dry then I hung dry them.

This is the very reason the lady kept the electrical turned off she knew there was a problem she wanted to be prepared if something happened the very reason for Turing it off, on. There should never be any smells that is your warning that something isn’t right. I fear for your safety, this is something you need to take seriously. You are getting your warnings you need to take it very seriously as it could mean your life. The dryer should never get hot. When you say it get hot to the touch there is no doubt in my mind if left it is going to catch on fire, it is a fire trap. It could even be the outside vent if you have one is blocked with lint. You need to call an electrician, also get someone to clean your dryer hourly. I live on my own therefore I have to see that these things are taken care of, what I can’t do I hire done, please don’t take chances with your life, these things can’t talk they are certainly giving you a warning loud, clear.

A thorough cleaning improves dryer efficiency and fire safety. Our older dryer was taking longer to dry clothes. Took off bottom plate, back, brushed and vacuumed. Lots of old lint. I had previously replaced corrugated vent pipe. Brushed it out again, put back together. Much improved drying time. 👍

While in college back in the 80s, I had a job working in a laundromat. One of the first tasks the owner trained me to do was to REALLY clean the dryer vent screens. He walked up to a random dryer that wasn't being used and pulled out the screen, which had been cleared of lint. He asked me if I thought it was clean. I said yes. He then walked it over to the utility sink and filled the screen up with water. It was completely clogged with fabric softener residue. If it will hold water then air won't pass thru it. He scrubbed the screen with a stiff bristle brush and detergent, then rinsed it and water went straight thru it. This task needed to be done once a week at the laundromat and is hardly ever done with home machines. He also taught me that the worst thing you can use in either the washer or the dryer is fabric softener. The way dryer sheets work is the heat of the dryer melts and atomizes the fabric softener, which then transfers not just to the clothes but every surface exposed to the heated air. He also showed me the back of the big commercial dryers, which looked like they had a coating of shellac over all of the guts of the dryer with lint stuck in it, including the motor, heating element, etc. (There were also several dryer sheets that had "disappeared" from the drum and were littering the guts of the dryer.) He said that he wished fabric softener had never been invented as it was shortening the life of his machines. (I've seen corroborating videos here on YT from appliance repairers who routinely find washers/dryers on the side of the road "free" and in most cases the washers were gummed up with fabric softener. After being cleaned, the washers work fine and they sell them.) The owner explained to me why people think they need fabric softener: It's because they use too much detergent (even when going by the detergent manufacturers' instructions, which insure they sell more soap). People equate suds with clean, so more suds means cleaner, right? Not so much. The detergent that is in the water is what cleans the clothes, not the suds. He explained what happens when too much detergent is used: The dirt rides up on top of the suds, which float on the surface of the water. During the rinse cycle the dirty water drains out from the bottom, then the suds and the dirt are deposited back on the clothes, and the rinse spray breaks up some of the remaining suds leaving some suds behind along with the dirt. (If you've ever pulled something out of the washer and found white powdery streaks on the clothes, it's suds and dirt residue that didn't get rinsed out. Part of that dirt is skin cells.) That residue makes clothes feel stiff and crunchy. Fabric softener doesn't remove the residue but instead coats it to make it seem softer. Over time, that residue builds up, even to the point of making clothes measurably heavier. He taught me to use half the detergent recommended and to use white vinegar instead of liquid fabric softener. It works thru chemistry: Soap is a base and vinegar is an acid, so adding vinegar to the rinse cycle neutralizes the soap (don't add it to the wash cycle for that reason). It also works with hard water to neutralize it. If vinegar smell is a concern, it dissipates in the dryer or the washer can be set to add an extra rinse for those items that need to be air dried. Even so, the vinegar smell really isn't that strong and it dissipates naturally in a day or two. Based on this info, I haven't used fabric softener in the rinse cycle and no dryer sheets ever since. (I used to use about a tablespoon in the wash cycle as a defoamer only to eliminate suds but haven't needed to do that since I started making my own detergent with Washing Soda, Borax and Castile soap, equal parts mixed in a food processor after shredding the bar soap into flakes. I use a 2 tablespoon scoop per load.) That way I don't have to worry about fabric softener gumming up my clothes and shortening the life of my machines. Amazing info! I just use a little bit of vinegar as a fabric softener for things like new Dickies and otherwise just use washing soda and detergent. Glad to know I'm not just 'old fashioned' :)

Wow, I learned a lot! THANK YOU!!!!!! I never knew this. This stuff should be taught in school under Home Economics to both girls and boys as a mandatory class in basic life skills. This was a masterclass, many thanks! I will save detergent this way, and white vinegar is only $5 at Costco for 2 gals. I also use it in my toilet to remove lime scale, and around my sinks twice a month. Great stuff and eco friendly. I use fabric dryer sheets but now will not use them anymore. So glad you posted this!😍😍

I just cleaned my dryer ducts with a leaf blower and the dryer itself as you showed. The big discovery, other than the hazmat zone under the appliances, was that the duct work inside the walls had become disconnected at some time in the last 50 years, and that the wall cavity was full of lint, making a nice fire trap. Funny how simple projects blossom into truly disgusting day-long expeditions. I feel like a proctologist for appliances now. Thanks for the great info. Your video may have saved my house from burning down.

I found this video by accident, so happy I did! I know my dryer vent needs to be cleaned, but too expensive to pay someone for a rental apartment. I knew that there had to be something to clean your ducts yourself, thank you for posting this video. My ex-husband and I lost our home to a fire and it is still traumatic enough that I always worry about possible fire hazards. When I was a teenager we had a dryer fire due to vent duct to outside never cleaned. The fire department were throwing towels out on the front lawn and all the neighbors were watching. My mom was thanking God that it wasn't the previous load, all her underwear and bras would have been on the front lawn! We ended up with a new dryer and the management company of the apartment complex cleaned the dryer vent to the outside. I ❤️ KZread for this reason, so many DIY videos have saved me tons of money as a single Mom.

Who doesn't like a fireman story? I am a retired Fire Marshal. Build up in duct work is a real hazard! I have been to several house fires that determined the dryer wasn't venting properly. Flexible ductwork is crap, and should be avoided at all costs. By not venting the heat, it can do damage to the plastic dryer parts, like the squirrel cage blower assemblies. Secondly, and this is hard to believe, but I have seen it twice, improper venting can cause the laundry to actually burn. Once in a restaurant that washed their own laundry, hot towels were removed and folded, and placed on a table in the restaurants basement. An hour later, someone smelled something burning. they found the folded towels smoldering. This was from a household type dryer. The other came from the laundry room of the county jail, using commercial grade equipment. The ductwork was rectangular, steel approximately 10''x14" in size, with an approximate 20' horizontal run. An inmate removed the kitchen towels and aprons to a basket and left it on the table, and left the room. Later a guard went into the room and sniffed for the burning smell. Finding nothing, our department was called. Our guys sniffed around, and eventually discovered the basket was the source. When I arrived to investigate, the items had been laid out on the pavement and wetted. Several items had completely burnt through. Opening the duct near the dryer, this duct was at least 90% occluded. There were no cleanout access points. Staff had no recollection of it ever being cleaned. I red-tagged the system until it could be professionally cleaned. Don't ignore your ductwork.

Hi, fellow Fire Marshal😢 While taking a seminar I learned that kitchen laundry wipes and towels when still hot folded and stacked have been known to combust. It was thought that oils were not completely washed out That is a commercial laundry where an ironer was used Enjoy your retirement.

Yep, our dryer caught fire but thankfully was confined to the lower basin underneath filter screen. Our ducts had not ever been cleaned since the house was built (15 years). If it had traveled up the ducts through the wall, it could have ignited the house. Cleaning every couple of years in our new house now.

Taping the joints of the fiberglass rod is advisable, so they don't separate inside the duct vent. I like the idea of using a plastic cup so the vacuum is always on while brushing the duct.

A leaf blower on the inside one a year. Have the wife video the outside vent as you do it. You will be shocked at what comes out. Told my neighbor and he tried it. His video showed Jimmy Hoffa flying out.

The instructions I got with my brush tool thing ( it's 5 years old) is to brush in one direction while vacuuming from the other direction. It has worked great.I clean the pipe once a year. I would also change that outside vent, just my two cents. Go video, thanks

We used to leave the dryer on when we left the house and nearly lost the entire house one day due to a lint fire. Luckily, we got to it soon enough as it was surrounded by concrete in the basement. Very good tips.

1:45 we knew a woman who bought a new dryer because he old one stopped drying. Shortly afterward, her new dryer also stopped, so she called a repairman who told her she needed to clean the lint trap. She had no idea there was a lint trap nor that it needed cleaning. LOL

We had a fire in our dryer from the excess lint collected inside the dryer and exhaust. I now run a shop vac to clean it about 6 months! Scared the sheet out of me! 😂

I did this last year when I moved into my new place. Used that exact same kit and what a difference it made. Can’t recommend this enough. I know someone that their house burnt down due to not cleaning their dryer lint.

I am so glad I accidentally saw this video. I was watching videos of a new compact leaf blower and when it ended, there were suggested videos to watch and luckily this was one of them. My dryer duct is horizontal to the outside vent and is only 18" long. I always make sure the mesh screen is cleaned of lint , but at the suggestion of a commenter, I used soapy water and a brush to thoroughly clean it. Then I went outside to look at the outlet vent and it had a bunch of lint that I was able to remove with my fingers and a vacuum with a crevice tool. I noticed that the flap door was stuck wide open and I used a long screwdriver to remove more lint that was keeping the flap from closing. I also attached a small diameter hose to the vacuum to go into ducting to suck out any existing lint. I could see inside the duct with my flashlight and it was really clean. I turned the dryer on to test it, and the flap opened properly and when I turned the dryer off, the flap closed properly. I just wanted to thank the creator of this video. You might have prevented a fire and saved my home for me.

Thank you!!! Very useful video, and really shows how to clean a dryer vent. When vent goes up its even worse. One thing I do, is after vacuuming everything out, I reverse the vacuum and blow out the dryer from inside the lint screen opening. It is amazing how much lint comes out that you don't see. You need to wear a mask and goggles. It is a mess. Then I blow out the vent too from dryer side and reverse as well, after tying a sieve to garage side. Oh my! If I buy a used dryer, I turn it upside down and vacuum the heck out of it on my driveway. Years of lint come off, contacts are cleaned with alcohol and dry brush, and good as new. Vacuum, blow, vacuum, blow both ends repeatedly till it is clean.

One additional trick, if you can disassemble the pipe, it’s better to take outside. Wash out with garden hose so no dust to breathe. Use a rag soaked in Armor All to coat the inside of pipe. This application can cut down on 80% of lint sticking to surfaces.

Good video. I use the same "segment" dryer cleaning device. If you never reverse the drill, I don't think you need to wrap the connections in tape. The torque from the drill is a enough to really tighten down the threaded connections, such that at least for me, I need to use pliers to grip and loosen them. It's also a good idea, if you can, to measure how long your run is first. Then you have a sense for now many segments you need to keep attaching. And maybe not ideal, but I turn the dryer on (air/fluff setting), and clean from the outside. The lint does spread around a bit. But you have the full blowing capacity of the dryer pushing out loose lint. I''d tend to think on a long run, that's a lot more air volume than the suction from a vacuum with a 1"+ diameter hose. There's actually an lint collection bag that can be attached over a vent discharge, with a zipper that allows getting a brush in it, basically sealed around the shaft.

You can use a pair of nylons taped over the outside vent frame to catch that line, in a pinch.

Dryer lint is a really good fire source for fire pits.

18:05 my husband is an appliance Repair tech. You would not believe how many of these kits he find stuck in the venting. He recommends using a leaf blower on the inside and then using the brush by hand from the outside. If it’s not too bad, you can just turn the dryer on and use the brush from the outside. The pressure of the blowing dryer plus the brush will still clear it.

There’s also another step you need to do for the lint trap mesh. You need to run water over it and see if it flows through. If it doesn’t, you need to gently scrub it with a soft brush and dish soap. Then recheck with the water and see if it works.

It's amazing how much lint gets lots inside the dryer, at the bottom. For those that aren't scared, remove the front of your dryer and that should allow you to vacuum the inside of the dryer and clean it all the way. On most models you'll release 2 clips at the front, flip the top up, remove the screws that hold the front panel attached, and that whole panel will come off. The drum should stay in place held by a piece in the middle that usually doesn't interfere too much with the cleaning inside. It's basically the steps you'd follow to replace the heating element. Get a shop vac ready because it's a lot of lint (depending on the age of your dryer).

I’m thinking mine is loaded with lint it just going bad the house we purchased the lady kept all breakers turned off to all appliances etc said to save money but I smell weird smells sometimes stronger then others and at times i smell electric smell very weird. But my dryer is old and when I go to clean the lint out most or half falls down into then I can’t get it out. I’m not sure why it does that as I clean it every time the dryer stops. But even the top of my dryer gets really hot and have to dry my clothes multiple times I have been told oh it’s just your heating element but I’m not so sure. I mean if a heating element would it get that hot?

People don't use dryer lint as fire tinder because it's hard to light. Good demonstration.

The tool you hooked to the vacuum is a good one for vacuuming out your vehicle getting between the seats and center console as well as under the seats it will fit better than most crevice tools that come with vacuums

glad i came across this. ours is ten years old & never cleaned those 'hidden' areas you pointed out', will do ours today & our daughters tomorrow. was always just satisfied with using the cone & duct brushes & vacuum 'blower' end to blow out lint through the outside vent ( a very short run). ours has its own vent. one thing I would do you havent is to just remove the head (part with screws) rather than do it twice. all in all, a GREAT video, thanks. btw, lol, you did scare me a bit with the thought of fire & 'blockage' results but thanks for that to..

Elderly couple from our church left dryer on when they went to bed. House caught fire and both died from smoke inhalation.. it was very sad for our community.

Thanks, Matt, now I have something else I can lie in bed at night and worry about until I take care of this issue. And talk about an exponential ick factor, yeccccch! I have flexible pipe connecting my dryer to the outside flappy door thing. I can’t even imagine how much lint must be in that pipe. So it’s off to the big box store for some pipe, aluminum tape, and hangers. But if it keeps the house from burning down, it will all be worth the work.

I am very grateful for your step-by-step, comprehensive video. Something I learned from another channel is that you need to wash your lint screen. Fabric softener leaves an invisible residue on your screen so that water won’t even go through the mesh.

It's amazing, all the extra fluff that builds up in a tumble drier that you can't get at. It would be a breath of fresh air when a designer uses the equipment he has designed to see how easy preventaive maintenance can be carried out. maybe he would change his design or maybe get a woman to design dryers and washing machines.

This! As a woman I can always spot small design flaws that are overlooked in mfg.

Lint & hair is never ending. I keep the dryer clean, I go outside & keep the outlet screen clean & and make sure air flows out easily & completely. I've never had to clean the pipe yet, but keep checking it yearly.

Getting all of that lint out was absolutely satisfying. I did mine about 5 years ago, but I did not know about the bucket on the dryer end. I think I NEED to clean the vents again. 😂 Adding that to the list. Thank you again.

For an older dryer, would highly recommend taking the back panel off the dryer and cleaning out the inside of the unit, and checking the condition of the internal seals, the foam they use deteriorates badly over time.

SQUIRREL CAGE BLOWER FAN If you have lint that made it past the lint trap then it WILL build up on the blades of the fan. There are a lot of them and each blade should be cleaned. My Maytag-electric dryer is 40 years old and I service it regularly. (I did have to install a new heating coil, surprisingly easy). But a clean fan moved more air, which is good for the coil. My May

I love my old Maytag because 2 screws on the bottom of the front panel gives access to everything (except the timer). Forced air furnaces need their squirrel cage fans cleaned also and will blow hot or AC cooled air much faster! But the clothes dryer fan is smaller and in a very lint-dust environment and needs cleaning!

You might think about taking the back panel off, too. I did this to mine and was amazed at how much stuff was inside the dryer, too!

I have one of those vacuum attachments, but it looks slightly different. It helps a lot. And that comment below about fabric softener and dryer sheets is dead on. I've cleaned old dryers where people used dryer sheets, and not only does the residue stink, but it's like concrete. The sheets are a solution to a problem which doesn't exist. "OH NO! MY SOCKS ARE STICKING TO MY JEANS!" Okay, pull them off. In my last house the dryer vented to the roof from the laundry room - it went straight up about 12 feet through a rectangular tube, which had a 4 inch round fitting coming out of the wall. I used those brushes you have, and a shop vac, and got most of the lint. Then I ran a corded leaf blower to blow out the residue; there was a LOT of 'residue'. In our current house we have a hole in the wall that goes straight outside from the laundry room, so cleaning the vent pipe takes 30 seconds, plus the time to get the shop vac and take it back.

You should have done that from outside with the dryer running the heat will soften the rods so they bend on the 90s easier and the running dryer will push it all out the vent

Wow! Brand new dryer now! Nice job. If only you could figure out how to get all that lint back into your clothes, you have brand new clothes too. When I cleaned my vent pipe a few months ago, I noticed most of the lint was trapped at the outlet.

thx for the video my daughter cleaned ours out a few weeks ago we have a really short hose which is a pain to work with but she got it all cleaned out👍.... and we use a toothbrush for the lint trap everytime (she had to take the back of the dryer off and clean that part which was the hardest part because of the angle of it the dryer brush couldn't get to some of it and my arm was almost small enough to get some of it with the toothbrush but in the end we got it alk vacuumed and works alot faster now too👍

I have taken the vacuum to our dryer. Our outside wall is 3 feet away so I often take the vent hose outside and wash it. Nice tool for that 4” pipe you hooked up to the drill. All the best from north Texas.

Birds love the lint and dryer vent outlet. Even when the "door" closes they will get in. I had nests 2 yrs in a row and finally got a squirrel cage. I do clear it once or twice a year.

You definitely need to take the dryer apart and clean inside the case too. Ours wasnt drying once and i took the whole thing apart. The whole inside was covered in half in thick lint and the stuff that was sitting on top of motor/heating element or whatever, was charred black but was probably about to ignite.

Great video our carpet cleaning guy offers cleaning these as a service. I always clean after eaçh dryer use. Have to keep reminding my kids and wife to do the same. 😊😊

I use that drill brush every 6 months. My dryer vents to my roof, about 22 feet. It's a must for me.

Do you do anything at the roof vent, or you just go from inside to outside, not touching the actual flapper housing on the roof?

@@matteosummer79 Yes, I had to. My dryer hose was filling up with water over time so the only suspect was the roof vent. Sure enough, it was packed with lint. I removed the grated cover/screen.

​@TM_Stone that's exactly what happened to mine. They pulled about two 5 gallons buckets of damp lint out from the floor to the roof top which had not been cleaned in over twenty years! MY DRYET THEN WORKED LIKE BRAND NEW!

@@nicolad8822 I suppose. Since the washer and dryer is in the middle of the house, there's no way to vent to a wall. A dryer venting directly to an outside wall is the way to go.

What a great video for cleaning the air vent of the dryer. I don't know if I can do all that but my set up is easier. My dryer is right behind the outdoor vent so it won't be as complicated as yours.. I really enjoyed how well you did this job and Thank you for all the great tips. My laundry “room” is do tiny I have to take the door off just to pull the appliances away from the wall and then hop over them to get to the back; extremely tight working conditions. My bent is inside the wall so I don’t know if it’s round or a rectangle and it goes straight up to the roof top. I’m thinking I’ll have to have my chimney sweep also clear the vent from the roof access. I can tackle the lower end but not the upper . Very good video snd the comments are super helpful, especially from the fire guy and the 1980’s college guy.

I have the 30 ft and it is fantastic

Dryer sheets and fabric softeners act like glue in the venting system. It might surprise you how much lint ends up behind that back cover where the motor/belts and wiring is.

Great video. I have to wear a mask when I do that sort of cleaning. I have like three of those blue hoses or close so thank you for the illustration, helping me make a choice. I need that pick tool, I used a dental pick tool.
